Conforming Tendencies of Adolescent and Adult Groups on Biased Lectures of the Expert on the Topic 'The Cicada' ('매미'를 주제로 한 전문가의 편파적 강의에 대한 청소년 및 성인 집단에서의 동조 경향)

  • This study was performed to know about the conformity tendencies of adolescent and adult groups based on lectures of the expert on the topic 'the cicada'. Characters of each lecture were 'he pure natural science', 'positiveness', 'negativeness' and 'neutrality,' and then attitude changes on the cicadas were investigated with a questionnaire. Consequently, half of the adolescent and adult groups thought of the cicadas' sounds as 'noise' through mass communications respectively. They had a neutral attitude, neither positive nor negative, on cicadas' sounds in the beginning. Attitudes of the people on the cicada, however, were changed positively only with a pure natural science lecture. In this case, the adolescent group was more prevalented by the lecture than the adult group. In other words, the positive-based lecture affected them positively, while the negative-based lecture affected them negatively. The conformity tendencies of adolescent groups participating in the positive-based lecture were substantial. In conclusion, as we can see from the so-called Kohlberg's 'stages of moral development', conformity tendencies of attitudes towards cicadas' sounds were generally much more prevalent in the adolescent group, compared with the adult group, even though there are some differences in subcategories.

  • This study investigated the relations of adolescents' attitudes toward risk behaviors, perceived benefits and costs, and their risk behaviors. The subjects were 955 high school freshmen in the Daegu$\cdot$Kyungpook area. The major findings were as follows. (1) Adolescents' attitudes toward risk behaviors were positively associated with the perceived benefits of adolescent risk behaviors, but these were negatively associated with the perceived costs of adolescent risk behaviors. (2) Compared to boys, girls had more positive attitudes toward adolescent drinking. In addition, girls perceived more benefits but less costs of adolescent risk behaviors than did boys. (3) There were no gender differences in the relationships between dependent variables and adolescent risk behaviors.

Parents-Adolescent Conflicts and the Ways of Representing the Conflicts (청소년자녀의 부모와의 갈등과 갈등표출방식)

  • This study was done to investigate how different the degrees of the parent-adolescent conflicts and the ways of representing the conflicts were according to the sex. The subjects were 468 high school students. For data analysis, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, and Duncan-test were used. The main results of this study were as follows; 1. There were significant differences between the sex in the degrees of the parent-adolescent conflicts. 2. The ways of representing the conflicts were found to be argumentative behaviors in boys and discursive behaviors in girths. 3. There were found significantly different according to sex in the ways of representing the conflicts according to the degrees of the parent-adolescent conflicts.

The Effect of an Internet-Based Anger Management Program for School-Aged Children to Prevent School Violence (학교폭력 예방을 위한 인터넷 기반 분노조절 프로그램의 개발과 효과 검증)

  • Objectives : This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of an internet-based anger management program for school-aged children. Methods : Forty-eight elementary school students took part in an anger management training program; subsequently, participants, their parents, and their teachers answered questionnaires assessing the participants' anger, aggressiveness, and other emotional/behavioral problems, pre- and post-training. Results : At the post-training self-assessment, the participants showed significant reductions in their "anger-out" tendencies and physical aggressiveness. In addition, the effects of the program on "anger-out" tendencies, aggressiveness, anger and peer relational problem were found to be more significant in participants who reported depressive symptoms. Teachers rated the participants' peer-relational problems as having decreased after the training. Conclusion : The proposed internet-based anger management program had a significant effect on the school-aged children's abilities to control their anger.

The Buying Behavior for School Uniforms according to Adolescents' Assertiveness and Appearance Concerns (청소년들 자기표현과 외모 관심에 따른 교복제품 구매행동에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify impacts of adolescent consumers' assertiveness and appearance concerns on their buying behaviors when they buy school uniforms. This research examined information sources and purchase evaluative criteria as related variables of clothing buying behaviors. The Internet survey was carried out to middle and high school students in Seoul. A total of 907 data were analyzed by factor analysis, frequency analysis and step-wise multiple regression analysis. The results of this study were as follows: From a result of factor analysis on adolescent consumers' assertiveness, appearance concerns and information sources and purchase evaluative criteria for buying school uniforms, each four variances showed factorial structures clearly. School uniform consumers' assertiveness and appearance concerns had significant influences on information sources and purchase evaluative criteria. Especially, an impact of conformity appearance concern was inclined to be high on information sources and purchase evaluative criteria.

The Influence of Adolescent Self-Leadership and Manners on the Adjustment to School Life (청소년의 셀프리더십이 예절수행 및 학교생활적응력에 미치는 영향)

  • This research examines the importance of self-leadership and manners in enhancing the adjustment to school life in adolescents. The findings are used as part of a practical strategy to develop strong high school cultures. The data were obtained by administering a self-reported questionnaire to high students adolescents residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi. A total of 316 questionnaires were used as the final data for this study. Statistical analyses were carried out using SPSS/PC. The main results of the study are as follows: First, the adolescent's self-leadership greatly influenced the student's manners. Second, the relationship between self-leadership, manners and the adjustment to school life showed a significantly positive correlation. Third, a stepwise regression analysis showed that self-leadership competency and implementation of manners made a comparatively high contribution to the adolescents' adjustment to school life. Therefore, the degree of the student's self-leadership and use of manners in order to maintain harmonious relationships with others leads to a healthy and happy scholastic life for the student.

Total Ankylosis by Heterotopic Ossification in an Adolescent Anterior Trans-olecranon Fracture Dislocation: A Case Report

  • The incidence of heterotopic ossification in adolescents appears to be lower than in adults. There exist very few reports of heterotopic ossification with total bony ankylosis in child or adolescent populations. We describe a case of total bony ankylosis of the elbow secondary to heterotopic ossification, in a 14-year-old female. Total ankylosis of the elbow at 45 degrees of flexion was noted 6 months postsurgery, and complete surgical excision of the heterotopic mass was performed. After an additional one-time dose of radiation therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug medication, full range of motion was obtained without any recurrence or other complications, up to the last follow-up of 30 months.

Factors Influencing Self-Confidence in the Teacher's Role on Adolescent Suicide (청소년 자살에 대한 교사의 역할수행 자신감에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The aim of study was to identify factors influencing the self-confidence in the teacher's role on adolescent suicide. The cross-sectional descriptive study design was used. Participants were 318 teachers from elementary, middle, and high school in D city. Data were collected using questionnaires which included general characteristics, attitude toward adolescent suicide, knowledge about guideline for adolescent suicide prevention, and self-confidence in the teacher's role on adolescent suicide. Collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS 21.0 program. The results of the regression analysis revealed that experience of suicide education, attitude, and knowledge about adolescent suicide were the significant factors affecting the self-confidence in teacher's role for adolescent suicide. The predictor variables explained 22.5% of variance regarding self-confidence in teacher's role for adolescent suicide. Findings indicate the factors should be used in developing effective intervention for enhancement of self-confidence in teacher's role on adolescent suicide.

Path Analysis on Adolescent's Suicidal Ideation -A Comparison of Adolescent Suicide Attempters and Non-attempters- (자살시도 청소년과 자살 비시도 청소년의 자살생각에 영향을 미치는 경로 비교분석 -짐이 되는 느낌과 좌절된 소속감의 직접효과와 매개효과-)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the pathways of factors that influence adolescent's suicidal ideation of suicide attempters and non-attempters and to compare path coefficients between the two groups. Results from simultaneous analysis of multiple populations suggest that the path model was appropriate for both groups. However, significant differences in path coefficients were found. Parental abuse and peer victimization had direct effects on adolescent's suicidal ideation only among the adolescent suicide non-attempters. Burdensomeness and hopelessness had direct effects on adolescent's suicidal ideation, whereas thwarted belongingness did not have direct effects for both groups. Peer victimization appear to have an indirect effect through burdensomeness for both groups of adolescents. Only among the adolescent suicide non-attempters, parental abuse had an indirect effect on suicidal ideation through burdensomeness, and burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness had indirect effects on suicidal ideation through hopelessness. The results indicate that differentiated approaches are required to prevent suicidal ideation for adolescent suicide attempters and non-attempters.

Predicting Adolescent Sexual Behaviors and Attitudes From the Use of Harmful Media (청소년 유해매체 이용이 성태도와 행동에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: Literature has shown the relationship between the use of harmful media and sexual behaviors among adolescents. Laws and regulations of violent and sexual mass media are getting stricter, but young children reported that they were still accessible to these harmful materials. It might be due to the development of new techniques in media delivery and new trends of game addict among Korean adolescents. Since there were very few studies on recent harmful media available to young children, the authors explore the usability of harmful media and identify related factors that can predict adolescent sexual attitudes and activities. Methods: This study was conducted secondary analysis using the internal data that were drawn from National Youth Committee's survey of adolescent harmful environment in 2007. The self-reported questionnaires were administered to 13,721 adolescents who were randomly selected based on strata of geography, school, and gender. Results: Adolescents accessed mostly to NC-19(No Children under 19) TV programs(35.8%) and AO(Adult Only) games(35.5%). Most of them reported that they did not have difficulty in the contact of these harmful media. The factors that can predict adolescent sexual intercourse are male adolescents, attending high school, not being satisfied with family life and school, contact with phone-advertising of sex, AO games and other online games, viewing adult videos, or reading adult books. Conclusions: When sex education is designed, an instructor considers not only students' demographic characteristics but also the strategies to deter the use of harmful media especially for game materials.
