This study examined the pathways from maternal parenting behavior to children's school adjustment through children's emotional intelligence. The participants in this study were 436 elementary school 4th-6th graders (of which 233 were boys, and 203 were girls) in Seoul. They completed questionnaires on maternal parenting behavior, children's emotional intelligence, and levels of school adjustment. Data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and structural equation modeling. It was found that maternal parenting behavior indirectly, but not directly, influenced children's levels of school adjustment through children's emotional intelligence. Children's emotional intelligence mediated the effects of maternal warmth/acceptance and rejection/restriction on levels of children's school adjustment. These results clearly indicate that emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in improving the levels of children's school adjustment.
The purpose of this study is to find which variable has the biggest effect on the school life adjustment of elementary school students among family strength, self-esteem, and the mother's rearing attitude. Second, the study observes how the elementary school student's self-esteem has a moderating effect regarding the rearing attitudes of their mothers and their school life adjustment. Five hundred forty-five fifth and sixth graders from an elementary school in Cheonan, are the participants of this study. The key research findings of this study are as follows: First, among the rearing attitudes of the mothers, family strength, and self-esteem, the variable that showed the greatest relationship with positive school life adjustment was family strength followed by self-esteem. Second, The self-esteem of the elementary school students showed a 1% moderating significant effect between the rearing attitudes of the mothers and school life adjustment. In the high self-esteem group of elementary school students, the moderating effect of self-esteem showed a higher level of school life adjustment when the students perceived that their mother had an affectionate rearing attitude, but showed a lower level of school life adjustment if they perceived their mother's rearing attitude as rejective or overprotective. Therefore, this study suggests that a focus on increasing self-esteem and family strength along with the affectionate rearing attitude of mothers is needed for the positive adjustment of elementary school students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between internet addiction and school adjustment of 3rd and 4th graders in elementary schools. Methods: The subjects were 689 graders from five schools in five districts, located in G, Korea and the data were collected ficxn April 18 to May 15, 2005. A scale consisting of 25 questions were developed as an instrument for testing internet addiction and a further 25 questions were developed for examining school Adjustment. The data was analyzed by testing frequency, percentage, means, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and Pearson's Correlation using SPSS/PC 10.0. Results: The results were as follows: The degree of internet addiction tendency were 6.0% of addiction, 24.2% of borderline and 69.8% of non-addiction. There were significant differences in school adjustment in terms of the degree of internet addiction(F=39.88, p< .05) and significant negative correlation between the degree of internet addiction and the school adjustment; the more they used to the internet, the lower school adjustment they have(r=- .376, p< .05). Conclusion: Those graders who started using the internet at an earlier age, were found to have increased levels of internet addiction. therefore, it is necessary to develop a program for the prevention of intemet addiction and a school adjustment education program is recommended for that.
In this paper, the effects of parental neglect and abuse on school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal in adolescents were examined using a sample of 2,163 second grade middle school students(1,096 boys and 1,067 girls) from the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) data set. All research variables were measured using self-reported questionnaires. They were analyzed by means of Structural Equation Modeling. The results indicated that parents' abuse had no direct effect, but there was an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by adolescents' social withdrawal. Parental neglect had a direct effect on adolescents' school adjustment and also had an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal. The results indicate that parental neglect is a more significant contributor than adolescents' social withdrawal on adolescents' school adjustment. The results of this study show that parenting attitude, more specifically parental neglect, tend to be more important factors on school adjustment compared to adolescents' psychological problems, such as social withdrawal in adolescence. Taken together, these findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving parental neglect and adolescents' social withdrawal need to be emphasized if adolescents are to better adjust to school life.
School adjustment of elementary school children is one of the most important things, sinceitisthebasisofthefuturelife. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parent-child relationship, peer relationship, teacher-child relationship, and school adjustment of elementary school students. The research topics of the present study were as follows: (1) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the parent-child relationship? (2) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the peer relationship? (3) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the teacher-child relationship in school? (4) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the grade, and sex? 460 students were sampled in Kangwon-do, and 400 were used in the final data analyses, excluding 60 due to the incomplete answering. Parent-child relationship inventory, peer relationship inventory, teacher-child relationship scale, and school adjustment scale were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS(win) 10.1K. The results were as follows: First, elementary school students adjust themselves to the school better when parent-child relationship, peer relationship, and teacher-child relationship are good. Second, teacher-child relationship has the most important effects on the school adjustment, and peer relationship, and parent-child relationship sequentially. Third, 4th graders adjust to the school better than the 6th, and there is no difference between boys and girls in terms of school adjustments. Based on the above results, discussion and implications for the future research and education were as below: First, teachers need to understand children's school adjustments depend upon their human relationships especially upon teacher-student relationships. Second, teachers need to understand students have more difficulties in adjusting to the school when they grow older. Third, teachers have to keep the children positive peer relationship, and parent-child relationship which are important in children's adjusting to the school. Fourth, future researches need nation-wide sampling and more systematized research design in order to generalize the results.
This study examined school adjustment and protective factors of school violence victims in 1128 5th and 6th graders. Children completed questionnaires. Descriptive analysis showed that 52.5% of the participants had experienced school violence at least once over the past 9 months. Boys reported more school violence than girls. Victims of school-violence experience showed lower levels of school adjustment than other students, but victims with protective factors of high self-esteem, teacher's support, internal locus of control, and parents' democratic fostering attitude showed better school adjustment. While these protective factors had a positive influence on children's school adjustment, friend's support had a negative influence.

This study was conducted to examine how children perceive emotional support, emotional regulation and self-efficiency. They came mainly from three elementary schools which are located in Gwangju metropolitan city. Questionnaires were provided to these students and the completed questionnaires were collected. Participants were 503 students. The results were as follows. First, only emotional support and self-efficiency directly affected in the school adjustment. Moreover, emotional support was the most influential factor. Second, although emotional support directly affected in the school adjustment, it also indirectly affected in the school adjustment through emotional regulation. Third, emotional regulation did not directly affect in the school adjustment, but on the other hand, it indirectly affected in the school adjustment through self-efficiency.
Objective: The purposes of this study were to examine the effects of school-age children's ego strength, failure tolerance, and performance anxiety on their school class adjustment, and to model the relation structure of the variables. Method: For these purposes, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 562 6th graders. Results and Conclusion: The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, ego strength, failure tolerance, and performance anxiety were significantly different according to gender. Second, in male students, ego strength, failure tolerance, and performance anxiety had a significant direct effect on school class adjustment. In addition, ego strength and failure tolerance had a significant indirect effect on school class adjustment. Third, female students' paths to school class adjustment were similar to male students' but the effect of failure tolerance on performance anxiety and the effect of performance anxiety on school class adjustment were not significant. Fourth, in the results of multi-group analysis, the effect path from ego strength to school class adjustment was different between male and female students, and the effect was higher in female students than in male students.
This research is focused on the influence of internalization problem and attachment to parents on the adjustment to school life, as well as on the attachment to parents as moderators in the influence of the process of internalization problem on the adjustment to school life. To verify the hypothesis, a survey research method was applied using stratified cluster sampling method, and focusing on middle school students in Seoul. Eleven schools were selected randomly from each of the eleven District Offices of Education in Seoul, and data were collected from 1,200 students. The data were analyzed by using the T-test and hierarchical regression methods, and the results are as follows. First, the internalization problem has negatively affected the adjustment to school life. Secondly, the moderators of the attachment to parents in the adjustment to school life were investigated. Through the above mentioned analysis, it can be deducted that, intervention with internalization problem is required in order to promote the adjustment to school life, and the importance of the attachment to parents should be addressed in the intervention for improving adjustment to school life.
