Optical compensation films are widely used to enlarge viewing angle characteristics for LCDs. A new surface film with an inner light scattering layer was newly developed to improve gray scale inversion. This paper describes technologies regarding these films that enhance the viewing angle characteristics for LCDs.
We obtained resonance field ($H_{res}$) and linewidth (${\Delta}H_{PP}$) from measured ferromagnetic resonance signal in the functions of polar angle (${\Theta}_H$) in Ni thin film of 240 nm thickness fabricated by electrodeposition method. The angular dependence of $H_{res}$ was well fitted with the calculated ones. We confirmed that the g-factor and effective demagnetization field were 2.18 and 445 emu/cc by the theoretical analysis of the resonance field, respectively. The angular dependence of ${\Delta}H_{PP}$ showed very large values at in-plane direction (${\Theta}_H=90^{\circ}$), which could not explained by the homogenous linewidth due to the Gilbert damping and inhomogeneous linewidth due to the angular variations and magnetization variations by the surface layer. Therefore, we considered the spin wave scattering (two magnon scattering) process in order to analyze the measured inhomogeneous linewidth, which was appeared in thicker film than the critical thickness of 50 nm. The defect medicated spin wave scattering played a key role in the electrodoposited Ni thin film of 240 nm thickness.
The flexible patterned cover film was made by a simple solution coating process using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) solution with glass beads. The effect of patterned cover film on the efficiency of solar cell has been investigated. It was found that the relative solar cell efficiency increased up to 3.4% with the incident light angle between $0-90^{\circ}$ by the sphere shape of glass bead coated on the film surface. This was understood that the loss of transmittance and scattering due to the light directional dependency on solar cell were minimized because the light entered glass beads normal to its surface regardless of incident light angle. The maximum relative solar cell efficiency was achieved when glass bead shape on the film is hemisphere and the relative efficiency increased with increasing the amount of glass bead on the film surface. However, too much glass beads on the film surface resulted in the lower relative solar cell efficiency due to the lowering of transmittance as well as the occurring of light interference.
Composite films based on ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ and chitosan were prepared, and tensile strength (TS), elongation (E), and water vapor permeability (WVP) of the films were measured. The molecular weight of ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ and chitosan was measured by a light-scattering instrument and was $5.1{\times}10^5,{\;}and{\;}1.71{\times}10^5$, respectively. TS of ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ and chitosan free film was 30.2 MPa and 21.0 MPa, respectively. TS of composite film was not related to the amount of the ascorbic acid. E of composite film was lower than those of the free films of ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ and chitosan. WVP of composite film was lower than that of chitosan film and was similar to WVP of ${\kappa}-carrageenan$ film.

Highly (111)-oriented PZT [Pb(Zrl-xTix)O3] thin films in the Zr-rich rhombohedral phase-field were successfully fabricated on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by combining PLD method with sol-gel process. These highly (111)-oriented films can be used as model systems for polarized Raman scattering study of PZT in the rhombohedral-Phase field because the (111)-direction is the principal off-center axis of the rhombohedral ferroelectricity. For this purpose, we have fabricated PZT films employing two distinctive compositions : one with Zr/Ti = 90/10 (abbreviated as PZT90/10) and the other with Zr/Ti= 60/40 (PZT60/40). The PZT90/10 film belongs to the octahedrally distorted FR(LT) phase with a cell-doubled structure, whereas the PZT60/40 is in the high-temperature FR(HT) phase-field at room temperature. To clearly separate E(TO) phonon modes from Al(TO) modes of the (111)-oriented rhombohedral film, we have suitably devised Z(X,Y)Z and Z(X,X)Z backscattering geometries for E(TO) and Al (TO), respectively. The polarized scattering experiment demonstrated that both types of (111)-oriented rhombohedral films closely followed the Raman selection rule.
Surfaced-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of 4,4'-biphenyldithiol (BPDT) has been investigated at a silver island film. Ordinary Raman (OR) spectra of neat sample in solid state and in basic solution have also been taken for comparison. The spectral feature in the SERS spectrum was similar to that for the OR spectrum in basic solution, except for the broadening of ring stretching bands indicative of the presence of surface-phenyl ring $\pi$ interaction. In contrast, only absence of the C-H stretching band with very small Raman scattering cross-section seemed not pertinent in judging the definitive orientation of molecule. The observed vibrational bands in the SERS spectrum have been assigned by referring to the normal modes and wavenumbers from density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the simple model as 4,4'-biphenyldithiolates bound to two Ag atoms at the both ends. Excellent agreement between the experimental and the calculated results was achieved, which is remarkable considering the level of theory applied.
Analytical capability of surface-enhanced Raman scattering has been evaluated. Silver films prepared by homogeneous chemical reduction were used as the substrate. Detection limits for p-nitrobenzoic acid, thiophenol and rhodamine 6G were around $10{\sim}100\;pg$.

Vacuum evaporated cadmium sulphide (CdS) thin films were implanted with $Ar^+$ and $N^+$ for different doses. The properties of the ion implanted CdS thin films have been analysed using XRD, optical transmittance spectra, and Raman scattering studies. Formation of Cd metallic clusters were observed in ion implanted films. The band gap of $Ar^+$ doped films decreased from 2.385 eV of the undoped film to 2.28 eV for the maximum doping. In the case of $N^+$ doped film the band gap decreased from 2.385 to 2.301 eV, whereas the absorption coefficient values increased with the increase of implantation dose. On implantation of both types of ions, the Raman peak position appeared at $299\textrm{cm}^{-1}$ and the FWHM changed with the ion dose.

The sapphire orientation dependence of the crystallization of ZnO thin films has been studied using real-time synchrotron x-ray scattering. The amorphous ZnO thin films with a 2400-${\AA}$-thick were grown on sapphire(110) and sapphire(001) substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering at room temperature. The amorphous ZnO films were crystallization into epitaxial ZnO(002) grains both on the sapphire(110) and on the sapphire(001) substrates. The epitaxial quality, such as mosaic distribution and crystal domain size, of the ZnO grains on the sapphire(110) is high, similar to that of the ZnO grains on the sapphire(001). With increasing the annealing temperature to 600$^{\circ}C$, the mosaic distribution and the crystal domain size of ZnO(002) grains in the film normal direction was improved and decreased, respectively.

In this work, we describe a very simple electroless deposition method to prepare moderate-SERS-active nanostructured Pd films deposited on the glass substrates. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the one-pot electroless method to deposit Pd nanostructures on the glass substrates. This method only requires the incubation of negatively charged glass substrates in ethanol-water mixture solutions of $Pd(NO_3)_2$ and butylamine at elevated temperatures. Pd films are then formed exclusively and evenly on glass substrates. Due to the aggregated structures of Pd, the SERS spectra of benzenethiol and organic isonitrile could be clearly identified using the Pd-coated glass as a SERS substrate. This one-step fabrication method of Pd thin film on glass is cost-effective and suitable for the mass production.
