  • We are planning to construct a scaled-down moderator facility to simulate the CANDU-6 moderator circulation phenomena during steady state operating and accident conditions. In the present work a preliminary experiment using a 1/40 scaled-down moderator tank has been performed to investigate the anticipated problems of the flow visualization and measurement in the planning scaled-down moderator facility. We shortly describe CFD analysis result for the 1/40 scaled-down test model and the flow measurement techniques used for this test facility under isothermal flow conditions. The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method is used to visualize and measure the velocity field of water in a transparent Plexiglas tank. Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) technique is used to evaluate the feasibility of temperature field measurement in the range of $20-40^{\circ}C$ of water temperature using an one-color method.

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has a scaled-down moderator test program to simulate the CANDU6 moderator circulation phenomena during steady state operation and accident conditions. In the present work a preliminary experiment using a 1/8 scaled-down moderator tank has been performed to identify the potential problems of the flow visualization and measurement in the scaled-down moderator test facility. With a transparent moderator tank model, a velocity field is measured with a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique under an isothermal state. The flow patterns from the inlet nozzles to the top region of the tank are investigated using PIV for a 1/8 scale moderator tank.

  • Steel cylindrical tanks are widely used for the storage of hazardous substances of which leakage must be prevented under any circumstances. However, the dynamic response of the steel cylindrical liquid storage tank depends sensitively on the fluid-structure interaction and the vibration of the tank structure and necessitates clarification for the safety of the tank structure. This paper presents the results of shaking table tests performed to examine the dynamic behavior of a scaled cylindrical steel tank model considering the presence or not of fixed roof and added mass at the top of the tank for various fluid levels. The test results confirm the occurrence of both beam-type and oval-type vibration modes and show that the larger content of liquid inside the container amplified the acceleration along the height of the cylindrical tank. The oval-type vibration modes are seen to be more dominant in case of large water-to-structure mass ratio.

  • The seismic responses of elevated tanks considering liquid-structure interaction are presented under horizontal earthquake. The scaled model tank is fabricated to study the dynamic responses of anchored tank and newly designed uplift tank with replaced dampers. The natural frequencies for structural mode are obtained by modal analysis. The dynamic responses of tanks are completed by finite element method, which are compared with the results from experiment. The displacement parallel and perpendicular to the excitation direction are both gained as well as structural acceleration. The strain of tank walls and the axial strain of columns are also obtained afterwards. The seismic responses of liquid storage tank can be calculated by the finite element model effectively and the results match well with the one measured by experiment. The aim is to provide a new type of tank system with vertical constraint relaxed which leads to lower stress level. With the liquid volume increasing, the structural fundamental frequency has a great reduction and the one of uplift tank are even smaller. Compared with anchored tank, the displacement of uplift tank is magnified, the strain for tank walls and columns parallel to excitation direction reduces obviously, while the one perpendicular to earthquake direction increases a lot, but the values are still small. The stress level of new tank seems to be more even due to uplift effect. The new type of tank can realize recoverable function by replacing dampers after earthquake.

  • Previous investigations have demonstrated that strong earthquakes can cause severe damage or collapse to storage tanks. Theoretical studies by other researchers have shown that allowing the tank to uplift generally reduces the base shear and the base moment. This paper provides the necessary experimental confirmation of some of the numerical finding by other researchers. This paper reports on a series of experiments of a model tank containing water using a shake table. A comparison of the seismic behaviour of a fixed base system (tank with anchorage) and a system free to uplift (tank without anchorage) is considered. The six ground motions are scaled to the design spectrum provided by New Zealand Standard 1170.5 (2004) and a range of aspect ratios (height/radius) is considered. Measurements were made of the impulsive acceleration, the horizontal displacement of the top of the tank and uplift of the base plate. A preliminary comparison between the experimental results and the recommendations provided by the liquid storage tank design recommendations of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering is included. The measurement of anchorage forces required to avoid uplift under varying conditions will be discussed.

  • The repetitive vibrating action of an aerodynamic load causes an external fuel tank's horizontal fin to experience a shorter life cycle than its originally predicted one. Store separation analysis is needed to redesign the fin of an external fuel tank. In this research, free-drop tests were conducted using 15% scaled models in a subsonic wind tunnel in order to analyze the store separation characteristics of an external fuel tank. The store separation trajectory based on grid tests was also obtained to verify the results of the free-drop tests. The results acquired from the free-drop tests correlated well with the grid tests in regards to the trajectories and behavior of the stores separated from the aircraft. This agreement was especially noted in the early stages of the store separation.

  • A study to evaluate the seismic response of $\frac{1}{2}$-scaled liquid storage tank constructed in Hualien, is performed. And this study is to identify the liquid-structure-soil interaction by observed earthquake data ans analyzed results. After the calculation of soil impedance for the test site by SASSI code, 3-dimensional seismic response analysis is performed by BEM-FEM-Impedance Method with the consideration of liquid-structure-soil interaction when the tank is excited by real earthquake. The observed acceleration and hydrodynamic pressure are compared with the numerical results. This comparisons show good agreement in predominant frequency and maximum hydrodynamic pressure. And the free surface sloshing motion due to earthquake loadings is computed in time domain.
