A scale parameter is the principal parameter to be estimated, since it corresponds to one of the main reliability characteristics, namely the average time to failure. To provide robustness of scale estimators to gross errors in the data, we apply the Huber minimax approach in time to failure models of the statistical reliability theory. The minimax valiance estimator of scale is obtained in the important particular case of the exponential distribution.

The performance of a number of existing dynamic subgrid-scale(SGS) models is evaluated in large-eddy simulations(LES) of two prototype transitional and turbulent shear flows, a planar jet and a channel flow. The dynamic SGS models applied include the dynamic Smagorinsky model(DSM);Germano et al. 1991, Lully 1992), the dynamic tow-component model(DTM; Akhavan et al. 2000), the dynamic mixed model(DMM;Zang et al, 1993). and the dynamic two-parameter model(DTPM; Salvetti & Banerjee 1995). The results are compared with those for DNS for their evaluation. The LES results demonstrate the superior performance of DTM with use of a sharp cutoff filter and DMM with use of a box filter, as compared to their respect counterpart DSM, in predicting the mean statistics, spectra and large-scale structure of the flow, Such features of DTM and DMM derive from the construction of the models in which tow separate terms are included to represent the SGS interactions; a Smagorinsky edd-viscosity term to account for the non-local interactions, and a local-interaction term to account for the nonlinear dynamics between the resolved and subgrid scales in the vicinity of the LES cutoff. As well, overall the SGS models using a sharp cutoff filter are more successful than those using a box filter in capturing the statistics and structure of the flow. Finally, DTPM is found to be compatible or inferior to DMM.

Many turbulence models have been developed in order to analyze the flow characteristics in an engine cylinder. Watkins introduced k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model for in-cylinder flow, and Reynolds modified turbulence dissipation rate by applying rapid transformation theory, Wu suggested k-${\varepsilon}-{\tau}$ turbulence model in which length scale and time scale are separated to introduce turbulence time scale, and Orszag proposed k-${\varepsilon}$ RNG model. This study applied the models to in-cylinder flow induced by intake valve and piston moving. All models showed similar flow fields during early stage of intake stroke. At the end of compression stroke, ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ Watkins, ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ Reynolds and ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ RNG predicted well second and third vortex, especially ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ RNG produced new forth vortex near central axis at the lower part of cylinder which was not predicted by the other models.
We have examined the problem of the number of quad-tree blocks that an n-dimensional rectangle will be decomposed into on the average. the contribution of this paper are both practical and theoretical. In this paper, we develops the overlapping multi-scale models and the region quad-tree models which is useful in computer graphics animation, image processing, pattern recognition and also for modeling three dimensional objects. These models, which represent something of a conceptual departure from other models developed for multi-scale framework were developed with the specific interest of producing smooth estimates.
The perceptual presentation of interior design is to represent an interior space planned by a designer as if people see it in reality. The perceptual presentation methods that have developed are perspectives, full-scathe models, small-scale models, photography of models, video taping of models, computer images, computer animation, and virtual reality. The purpose of this study is to investigate limits of those perceptual presentation methods according to their characteristics. The methods have characteristics that are either static or dynamic and either monoscopic or stereoscopic. In terms of representing interior spaces and perceiving interior spaces, the dynamic characteristic is more helpful than the static characteristic because the dynamic characteristic provides consecutively changing views of interior spaces when people walk around within the spaces. The stereoscopic characteristic is more helpful than the monoscopic characteristic because the stereoscopic characteristic provides the binocular depth perception. Full-scale models, small-scale models, virtual reality that have dynamic and stereoscopic characteristics, are most effective. The next effective methods are video taping of models and computer animation that have dynamic and monoscopic characteristics. The last effective methods are perspectives and photography each of models that haute static and monoscopic characteristics. But the most effective methods can nut be said that those are perfect because each of them still has limits. Designers have to consider the limits of each perceptual presentation method to find a way that shows their designs most effectively. To develop the perceptual presentation methods of interior design, researchers should focus on the helpful characteristics that are dynamic and stereoscopic.

Best management practices (BMPs) are widely accepted and implemented as a mitigation method for soil erosion and non-point source problems. Estimating the amount of soil erosion and the effectiveness of BMPs using hydrological models help to understand the condition, identify the problems, and make plans for conservation practices in an area, typically a watershed. However, the accuracy and reliability of assessment of BMP impacts estimated by hydrological models can be often questionable due to the uncertainties from various sources including GIS(Geographic Information System) data, scale, and model. This study reviewed the development and the background of hydrological models, and the modeling issues such as the selection of models, scale, and uncertainties of data and models. This study also discussed the advantage of a small scale and spatially distributed model to estimate the impacts of BMPs.

Shaking table tests were performed with full scale models of stone parapet on the ancient rampart. The objectives of these tests are to study the seismic behavior of the parapet and to obtain quantitative estimation of the intensities of historical earthquakes. Two test models were made based on the structure of the parapet remnant of a mountain fortress in Bukhan-San located in Seoul. Two types of infilling material are considered. The responses to models were tested subjected to three kinds of input motion.

Small-scale models have been frequently used for seismic performance tests because of limited testing facilities and economic reasons. However, there are not also enough studies on similitude law for analogizing prototype structures accurately with small-scale models, although conventional similitude law based on geometry similitude is not well consistent in their inelastic seismic behaviors. When fabricating prototype and small-scale model of reinforced concrete structures by using the same material, added mass is demanded from a volumetric change and scale factor could be limited due to aggregate size. Therefore, it is desirable to use different materials for small-scale model. In our recent study, a modified similitude law was derived depending on geometric scale factor, equivalent modulus ratio and ultimate strain ratio. And quasi-static and pseudo-dynamic tests on the specimens are carried out using constant and variable modulus ratios, and correlation between prototype and small-scale model is investigated based on their test results. In this study, tests on scaled model of different concrete compressive strength aye carried out. In shaking table tests, added mass can not be varied. Thus, constant added mass on expected maximum displacement was applied and the validity was verified in shaking table tests. And shaking table tests on non-artificial mass model is carried out to settle a limitation of acceleration and the validity was verified in shanking table tests.

A workflow process (or business process) management system helps to define, execute, monitor and manage workflow models deployed on a workflow-supported enterprise, and the system is compartmentalized into a modeling subsystem and an enacting subsystem, in general. The modeling subsystem's functionality is to discover and analyze workflow models via a theoretical modeling methodology like ICN, to graphically define them via a graphical representation notation like BPMN, and to systematically deploy those graphically defined models onto the enacting subsystem by transforming into their textual models represented by a standardized workflow process definition language like XPDL. Before deploying those defined workflow models, it is very important to inspect its syntactical correctness as well as its structural properness to minimize the loss of effectiveness and the depreciation of efficiency in managing the corresponding workflow models. In this paper, we are particularly interested in verifying very large-scale and massively parallel workflow models, and so we need a sophisticated analyzer to automatically analyze those specialized and complex styles of workflow models. One of the sophisticated analyzers devised in this paper is able to analyze not only the structural complexity but also the data-sequence complexity, especially. The structural complexity is based upon combinational usages of those control-structure constructs such as subprocesses, exclusive-OR, parallel-AND and iterative-LOOP primitives with preserving matched pairing and proper nesting properties, whereas the data-sequence complexity is based upon combinational usages of those relevant data repositories such as data definition sequences and data use sequences. Through the devised and implemented analyzer in this paper, we are able eventually to achieve the systematic verifications of the syntactical correctness as well as the effective validation of the structural properness on those complicate and large-scale styles of workflow models. As an experimental study, we apply the implemented analyzer to an exemplary large-scale and massively parallel workflow process model, the Large Bank Transaction Workflow Process Model, and show the structural complexity analysis results via a series of operational screens captured from the implemented analyzer.

Epidemic models are used to analyze the spreading of epidemic diseases, estimate public health needs, and assess the effectiveness of mitigation strategies. Modeling scope of an epidemic model ranges from the regional scale to national and global scale. Most of the epidemic models developed in Korea are at the national scale using the equation-based model. While these models are useful for designing and evaluating national public health policies, they do not provide sufficient details. As an alternative, individual-based models at the regional scale are often used to describe disease spreading, so that various mitigation strategies can be designed and tested. This paper presents an individual-based epidemic spreading model at regional scale. This model incorporates 2005 census data to build the synthetic population in the model representing Daejeon in 2005. The model's capability is demonstrated by an example where we assess the effectiveness of several mitigation strategies using the model.
