The performance of a computer system depends on the system architecture and workload, and the high performance required in many applications can be achieved by the scalability of the system architecture and workload. This paper presents scalable workload, a performance metric of scalable speedup and hierarchical modeling for the scalable computer system as well as the development of the object-oriented simulator spmplC++ Which is an advanced C++ version of the discrete event-driven simulation environment smplE. In addition, this paper presents two examples of applying scalable speedup, hierarchical modeling and simulator smplC++ to analyze the performance effect of the sclcbility in a multiprocessor system and a network-based client/server system.

This paper describes the scalable extension of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) to provide flexible high-quality digital video content services. The proposed scalable codec is designed on multi-loop decoding architecture to support inter-layer sample prediction and inter-layer motion parameter prediction. Inter-layer sample prediction is enabled by inserting the reconstructed picture of the reference layer (RL) into the decoded picture buffer of the enhancement layer (EL). To reduce the motion parameter redundancies between layers, the motion parameter of the RL is used as one of the candidates in merge mode and motion vector prediction in the EL. The proposed scalable extension can support scalabilities with minimum changes to the HEVC and provide average Bj${\o}$ntegaard delta bitrate gains of about 24% for spatial scalability and of about 21% for SNR scalability compared to simulcast coding with HEVC.
In this paper, we introduce a new scanning method for MPEG-4 AVC based Fine Granular Scalable video coding that can significantly improve the subjective picture quality of a decoded scalable video. The proposed scanning method can guarantee the subjectively improved picture qualify of the decoded scalable video by encoding, transmitting and decoding the visually important region most-preferentially. From the simulation results, it has been found that the proposed scanning method can lead the FGS method to achieve significantly improved picture quality, especially on the region of interests.

This paper presents a scalable coding method for depth images by considering the quality of synthesized images in virtual views. First, we design a new edge detection algorithm that is based on calculating the depth difference between two neighboring pixels within the depth map. By choosing different thresholds, this algorithm generates a scalable bit stream that puts larger depth differences in front, followed by smaller depth differences. A scalable scheme is also designed for coding depth pixels through a layered sampling structure. At the receiver side, the full-resolution depth image is reconstructed from the received bits by solving a partial-differential-equation (PDE). Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the rate-distortion performance of synthesized images at virtual views and achieves better visual quality.
A next-generation codec should be developed to be a scalable video codec(SVC) that not only maximizes the coding efficiency but also adaptively copes with the various communication devices and the variation of network environments. To meet these requirements, Joint Video Team (JVT) of ISO/IEC and ITU-T is standardizing H.264/AVC based SVC. In this paper, we introduce research directions and status on SVC standardization and also analyze techniques and algorithms adopted in the current SVC.
In this paper, we propose efficient peer assignment algorithms for low-latency transmission of scalable coded images in peer-to-peer networks, in which peers may dynamically join and leave the networks. The objective of our algorithm is to minimize the transmission time of a requested image that is scalable coded. When an image is scalable coded in different bit rates, the bit stream encoded in a lower bit rate is a prefix subset of the one encoded in a higher bit rate. Therefore, a peer with the same requested image coded in any bit rate, even when it is different from the requested rate, may work as a supplying peer. As a result, when a scalable coded image is requested, more supplying peers can be found in peer-to-peer networks to help with the transfer. However, the set of supplying peers is not static during transmission, as the peers in this set may leave the network or finish their transmission at different times. The proposed peer assignment algorithms have taken into account the above constraints. In this paper, we first prove the existence of an optimal peer assignment solution for a simple identity permutation function, and then formulate peer assignment with this identity permutation as a mixed-integer programming problem. Next, we discuss how to address the problem of dynamic peer departures during image transmission. Finally, we carry out experiments to evaluate the performance of proposed peer assignment algorithms.

In this paper, we demonstrate inter-layer prediction tools for scalable video coders. The proposed scalable coder is designed to support not only spatial, quality and temporal scalabilities, but also view scalability. In addition, we propose quad-tree inter-layer prediction tools to improve coding efficiency at enhancement layers. The proposed inter-layer prediction tools generate texture prediction signal with exploiting texture, syntaxes, and residual information from a reference layer. Furthermore, the tools can be used with inter and intra prediction blocks within a large coding unit. The proposed framework guarantees the rate distortion performance for a base layer because it does not have any compulsion such as constraint intra prediction. According to experiments, the framework supports the spatial scalable functionality with about 18.6%, 18.5% and 25.2% overhead bits against to the single layer coding. The proposed inter-layer prediction tool in multi-loop decoding design framework enables to achieve coding gains of 14.0%, 5.1%, and 12.1% in BD-Bitrate at the enhancement layer, compared to a single layer HEVC for all-intra, low-delay, and random access cases, respectively. For the single-loop decoding design, the proposed quad-tree inter-layer prediction can achieve 14.0%, 3.7%, and 9.8% bit saving.

In this paper, we propose a new framework for scalable media object to adapt the various QoS requirements in the heterogeneous networking environment. An MPEG-2 video is split into a set of scalable media objects in terms of temporal scaling and fidelity scaling. The portion of the scalable media objects is selectively delivered to adapt the QoS requirement. This framework can satisfy the various QoS requirements on bandwidth, even though the clients share a multipoint channel. By analysis on the rate-distortion characteristics of scalable media object framework, we shows our approach is feasible to support the various QoS requirements.
In this paper, we propose a novel design scheme for the operation of Decoded Picture Buffer (DPB) including reference picture re-ordering, marking process, and reference picture list construction to perform an efficient scalable multi-view video coding. Extensive simulations show that the proposed method can provide improved compression efficiency and improved video quality measured in terms of BD-Rate and BD-PSNR for the scalable multi-view video coding.
