  • The thermodynamic properties of R134a, the prospective R12 alternative, have been computerized using Martin-Hou equation of state and the coefficients given by Willson-Basu. Several experimental results in literatures for PVT data, saturated vapor pressure, saturated liquid density are compared with the calculated results to investigate the accuracy. The average deviation (max. deviation) is 0.13% (0.25%) for saturated liquid density, 0.25% (0.8%) for PVT data. Thermodynamic properties, enthalpy, entropy are compared with the NIST's. The maximum percent difference is 3% for saturated liquid enthalpy, 1.5% for saturated vapor enthalpy, 4% saturated liquid entropy, and 0.7% for saturated vapor entropy. Correction of W-B's coefficients and inclusion of the sixth term of M-H EOS for improvement of accuracy are recommended. R134a and R12 are compared with respect to refrigeration performance. COP's are different from each other within 3%. Refrigeration effect of R134a is superior to that of R12 but refrigeration capacity of R134a is inferior to that of R12 because the volumetric efficiency of the system using R134a is lower than that of the system using R12.

  • In this study, the behavior of saturated sandy soils under dynamic loads - pore water pressure and effective stress - was investigated using Disturbed State Concept(DSC) model. The model parameters are evaluated from laboratory test data. During the process of loading and reverse loading, DSC model is utilized to trace strain-hardening and cyclic softening behavior. The procedure of back prediction proposed in this study are verified by comparing with laboratory test results. From the back prediction of pore water pressure and effective mean pressure under cyclic loading, excess pore water pressure increases up to initial effective confining pressure and effective mean pressure decrease close to zero in good greement with laboratory test results. Those results represent the liquefaction of saturated sandy soils under dynamic loads. The number of cycles at initial liquefaction using the model prediction is in good agreement with laboratory test results. Therefore, the results of this study state that the liquefaction of saturated sandy soils can be explained by the effective tress analysis.

  • The saturated vapor density correlation proposed here relates logarithmic density to the inverse of temperature. Its performance is examined correlating the date listed in the ASHTAE tables for 40 refrigerants. The correlation equation is valid over the entire range where data point exist and gives better results than a conventional equation with the same number of adjustable coefficients. Number of terms in the equation is a variable so that great flexibility can be given to the representation of data.

  • Various correlations of saturated vapor density in a truncated power series form are tested and compared in this study. Saturated vapor density correlation can be expressed relating logarithmic reduced density to the reduced temperature. Five types of correlation has been investigated using saturated vapor density data for 22 pure substance refrigerants from ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Reftigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc.) property tables and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Chemistry Webbook. Correlations are fitted to the data points by least squares method. Data points are equally weighted. The best type of correlation among the five types is suggested. The results obtained indicate that the best correlations with 3, 4, and 5 terms yield average AAD's (Average Absolute Deviation) of 0.27%, 0.04%, and 0.02%, respectively, while widely used conventional correlations with 3, 4, and 5 terms yield those of 1.19%, 0.61%, and 0.17%. The suggested type of correlation could reduce the number of terms while improving performance.

  • Objectives: This study evaluated dietary intakes of total fat and fatty acids among the Korean adult population. Methods: This cross-sectional study used the 2016-2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. A total of 10,772 subjects aged ${\geq}19y$ for which dietary data were available were selected. Data pertaining to energy and nutrient intakes were obtained by a 24-h recall method. Total fat and fatty acids intakes were evaluated based on the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR) of 2015 Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans by sex and age groups. All statistical analyses accounted for the complex sampling design effect and sampling weights. Results: The mean intakes of energy and total fat were 1,952 kcal (95% CI: 1928-1977) and 46.1 g (45.2-47.1), respectively, and about 21% of the energy was obtained from fat in this study population (21.7% in men and 20.2% in women). The mean percentages of energy from saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids were 6.4%, 6.7%, and 5.2%, respectively. About 18% of adults exceeded the AMDR for fat (30% of energy), whereas 37.6% exceeded the AMDR for saturated fatty acids (7% of energy). The proportions of subjects who consumed more than the AMDR for fat and saturated fatty acids decreased across age groups in both sexes. Among young adults (19-29 y), about 63% of the subjects obtained ${\geq}7%$ of their energy from saturated fatty acids. About 61% of older adults obtained less than 15% of their energy from total fat. Conclusions: Increased intake of fat energy was prominent in saturated fatty acids. Our findings suggest current information on total fat and fatty acids intakes in Korean adults and can be used to provide dietary guidelines for the improvement of public health.

  • This study extends the Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) application to delineate the saturated zones in shallow sediment and evaluate the groundwater flow in both downward and upward directions. Dry, partially and fully saturated zones and water level in the subsurface can be recognized from this study. High resolution seepage velocity in vertical direction was estimated from the temperature data in the fully saturated zone. By a single profile, water level can be detected and seepage velocity in saturated zone can be estimated. Furthermore, thermal gradient analysis serves as a new technique to verify unsaturated and saturated zones in the subsurface. The vertical seepage velocity distribution in the recognized saturated zone is then analyzed with improvement of Bredehoeft and Papaopulos' model. This new approach provides promising potential in real-time monitoring of groundwater movement.

  • Steam tables including superheated, saturated and compressed region were simultaneously modeled using the neural networks. Pressure and temperature were used as two inputs for superheated and compressed region. On the other hand Pressure and dryness fraction were two inputs for saturated region. The outputs were specific volume, specific enthalpy and specific entropy. The neural network model were compared with the linear interpolation model in terms of the percentage relative errors. The criterion of judgement was selected with the percentage relative error of 1%. In conclusion the neural networks showed better results than the interpolation method for all data of superheated and compressed region and specific volume of saturated region, but similar for specific enthalpy and entropy of saturated region.

  • Saturated soil hydraulic conductivity is a very important soil parameter in numerous practical engineering applications, especially rainfall infiltration and slope stability problems. This parameter is difficult to measure since it is very highly sensitive to various soil conditions. There have been many analytical and empirical formulas to predict saturated soil hydraulic conductivity based on experimental data. However, there have been few studies to investigate in-situ hydraulic conductivity of weathered granite soils, which constitute the majority of soil slopes in Korea. This paper introduces an estimation method to derive saturated hydraulic conductivity of Korean weathered granite soils using in-situ experimental data which were obtained from a variety of slope areas of South Korea. A robust regression analysis was performed using different physical soil properties and an empirical solution with an $R^2$ value of 0.9193 was suggested. Besides that this research validated the proposed model by conducting in-situ saturated soil hydraulic conductivity tests in two slope areas.

  • Bacterial transport models were evaluated in this study to determine the suitable model at describing bacterial transport in saturated column experiments. Four models used in the evaluation were: advective-dispersive equation (ADE) + equilibrium sorption/retardation (ER) + kinetic reversible sorption (KR) (Model I), ADE + two-site sorption (Model 2), ADE + ER + kinetic irreversible sorption (KI) (Model 3), ADE + KR + KI (Model 4). Firstly, analyses were performed with the first experimental data, showing that Model 4 is appropriate for describing bacterial transport. Even if Model 1 and 2 fit well to the observed data, they have a defect of not including the irreversible sorption, which is directly related to mass loss of bacteria. Model 3 can not properly describe the tailing observed in the data. However, further analysis with the second data indicates that Model 4 can not describe retardation of bacteria, even if the sorption-related parameters are varied. Therefore, Model 4 is modified by incorporating retardation factor into the model, resulting in the improved fitting to the data. It indicates that the transport model, into which retardation, kinetic reversible sorption, and kinetic irreversible sorption are incorporated, is suitable at describing bacterial transport in saturated column experiments. It is expected that the selected transport model could be applied to properly analyze the bacterial transport in saturated porous media.

  • A new analytical expression for the saturated I-V characteristics of hydrogenerated amorphous silicon thin film transistors(a-si:H TFT) is presented and experimentally verified. The results show that the experimental transfer and output characteristics at several temperatures are easily modeled. The model is based on three functions obtained from the experimental data of $I_D$ versus $V_G$. Theoretical results confirm the simple form of the model in terms of the device geometry. It was determined that the saturated drain current increased at a fixed gate voltage and the device saturated at increasingly larger drain voltages while the threshold voltages decreased.
