In this paper, we present design features, implementation, and validation of a satellite simulator subsystem for the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2). The satellite simulator subsystem is implemented on a personal computer to minimize costs and trouble on embedding onboard flight software into the simulator. An object-oriented design methodology is employed to maximize software reusability. Also, instead of a high-cost commercial database, XML is used for the manipulation of spacecraft characteristics data, telecommand, telemetry, and simulation data. The KOMPSAT-2 satellite simulator subsystem is validated by various simulations for autonomous onboard launch and early orbit phase operations, anomaly operation, and science fine mode operation. It is also officially verified by successfully passing various tests such as the satellite simulator subsystem test, mission control element system integration test, interface test, site installation test, and acceptance test.

The Mission Control System for KOMPSAT-2 was developed by ETRI and is being operated at Satellite Control Center at KARI to monitor and control KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose Satellite) which was launched in July 28th, 2006. MCE provides the functions such as telemetry reception and processing, telecommand generation and transmission, satellite tracking and ranging, orbit prediction and determination, attitude maneuver planning, satellite simulation, etc. KOMPSAT-2 is the successor of KOMPSAT-1 which is an earth-observation satellite. KOMPSAT-2 has higher resolution image taking ability due to MSC (Multi Spectral Camera) payload in the satellite and precise orbit and attitude determination by Mission Control System. It can produce one meter resolution image compared to six meter resolution image by KOMPSAT-1.
Satellite orbit determination using angles only data from single ground station is carried out. The KOMPSAT-1 satellite mono-pulse angle tracking data from 9-meter S-band antenna at KARI site in Daejeon are used for the orbit determination. Various angle tracking arcs from one-day to five-day are processed and the orbit determination results are analyzed. Antenna pointing data are predicted based on the orbit determination results to check the possibility of re-acquisition and tracking of the satellite signal. Normal satellite mission operations including orbit determination, antenna prediction, satellite re-acquisition and automatic tracking from predicted antenna angle pointing data are concluded to be possible when three-day angle tracking data from single tracking station are used for the orbit determination.

Some methods have been presented to avoid collisions among satellites for satellite formation flying mission. The potential function method based on Lyapunov's theory is known as a powerful tool for collision avoidance in the robotic system because of its robustness and flexibility. During the last decade, a potential function has also been applied to UAV's and spacecraft operations, which consists of repulsive and attractive potential. In this study, the controller is designed using a potential function via sliding mode technique for the configuration of satellite formation flying. The strategy is based on enforcing the satellite to move along the gradient of a given potential function. The new scalar velocity function is introduced such that all satellites reach the goal points simultaneously. Simulation results show that the controller drives the satellite toward the desired point along the gradient of the potential function and is robust against external disturbances.
Satellite propulsion system is employed for orbit transfer, orbit correction, and attitude control. The monopropellant feeding system in the low-earth-orbit satellite blowdowns fuel to the thrust chamber. The thrust produced by the thruster depends on fuel amount flowed into the combustion chamber. If the thruster valve be given on-off signal from on-board commander in the satellite, valve will be opened or closed. When the thrusters fire fuel flows through opened thruster valve. Instantaneous stoppage of flow in according to valve actuation produces transient pressure due to pressure wave. This paper describes transient pressure predictions of the KOMPSAT2 propulsion system resulting from latching valve and thrust control valve operations. The time-dependent set of the fluid mass and momentum equations are calculated by Method of Characteristics (MOC).
KOMPSAT-2 will carry MSC(Multi-Spectral Camera) which provides 1m resolution panchromatic and 4m resolution multi-spectral images at the altitude of 685km sun-synchronous mission orbit. The mission operation of KOMSPAT-2 is to provide the earth observation using MSC with nadir pointing. KOMPSAT-2 will also have the capability of roll/pitch tilt maneuver using reaction wheel of satellite as required. In order to protect MSC from thermal distortion as well as direct sunlight, MSC shall be operated within the constraint of sun incidence angle. It is expected that the sunlight will not violate the constraint of sun incidence angle for normal mission operations without roll/pitch maneuver. However, during roll/pitch tilt operations, optical module of MSC may be damaged by the sunlight. This study analyzed sun incidence angle of payload using KOMPSAT-2 AOCS (Attitude and Orbit Control Subsystem) Design and Performance Analysis Soft ware for KOMPSAT-2 normal mission operations.
LEO Satellite performs the operations and missions by FSW(Flight Software) after separation from a launch vehicle. Many of the operations by FSW are automatically conducted by the algorithms of FSW. In the case of the IAC(Initial Activation and Checkout) operations, a mission scheduling, an orbit transition, etc, however, a decision and a control of the satellite operators or manufacturers are required in order to operate the satellite safely. For this, the wireless communication channel between a satellite and a ground station should be prepared to receive telemetries and to transmit tele-commands for controlling FSW properly. Therefore, the verification of the interface between KOMPSAT-3 and a ground station is essential. This verification test is named the satellite end-to-end test. In this paper, we show the design process of the satellite end-to-end test and test results.

The Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite(COMS), the first geostationary observation satellite, was successfully launched on June 27th in 2010. The raw data of Meteorological Imager(MI) and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI), the main payloads of COMS, is delivered to end-users through the on-ground processing. The COMS Image Data Acquisition and Control System(IDACS) developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) in domestic technologies performs radiometric and geometric corrections to raw data and disseminates pre-processed image data and additional data to end-users through the satellite. Currently the IDACS is in the nominal operations phase after successful in-orbit testing and operates in National Meteorological Satellite Center, Korea Ocean Satellite Center, and Satellite Operations Center, During the in-orbit test period, validations on functionalities and performance IDACS were divided into 1) image data acquisition and transmission, 2) preprocessing of MI and GOCI raw data, and 3) end-user dissemination. This paper presents that IDACS' operational validation results performed during the in-orbit test period after COMS' launch.

In the operation of a low earth orbit satellite, a series of antenna commands are transmitted from a ground station to the satellite within a visibility window (i.e., the time period for which an antenna of the satellite is visible from the station) and executed to control the antenna. The window is a limited resource where all data transmission is carried out. Therefore, minimizing the transmission time for the antenna commands by reducing the data size is necessary in order to provide more time for the transmission of other data. In this paper, we propose a geometric compression method based on B-spline curve fitting using dominant points in order to compactly represent the antenna commands. We transform the problem of command size reduction into a geometric problem that is relatively easier to deal with. The command data are interpreted as points in a 2D space. The geometric properties of the data distribution are considered to determine the optimal parameters for a curve approximating the data with sufficient accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to conventional methods currently used in practice.

The Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is a geostationary satellite being developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is one of the payloads embarked on the COMS satellite. It acquires ocean images around Korea in 8 visible spectral bands with a spatial resolution of about 500 m. The acquired data are used to provide forecasting and now casting of the ocean state. The GOCI operations are controlled by the satellite embedded software, i.e. on-board software. This paper introduces the GOCI payload of the COMS satellite and describes the control software for the GOCI.
