  • Geotube is made of permeable but soil-tight geotextile, hydraulically filled with soil include dredged sand and mud, which has been successfully applied in hydraulic and coastal engineering projects. Ceotube method is getting popular and being used a lot in many countries of the world because of the simplicity of the placement and construction, cost effectiveness and minimum impact on the environment, and enable to store & isolate contaminated materials as obtained by harbor dredging. Laboratory tests and field construction were performed to determine the design methodology and construction procedures. From the results of laboratory and field construction, the retention ratio of solid particle is a minimum 86%. The minimum permeability and the tensile strength of geotextile are $\alpha$ x 10$^{-4}$ cm/sec and 20t/m, respectively Also, based on the environmental test results, it can be concluded that this method does meet the Korean EPA standards.

  • Development of an effective liner by utilization of the tailings frm the Imcheon mine and polymer has been tried. The tailings piled in the Imcheon mine, whose true specific gravity is about 2.86, are composed mainly of quartz, alkali-feldspar, muscovite and pyrite, and mostly (93.7% in volume) coarser than sand grain size (50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Strength, leaching and permeability tests have been performed on the test specimens of polymer concrete manufactured with various mixing proportions of tailings, unsaturated polyester resins(UPR), calcium carbonates, stone powder sludges and granite soils. Polymer concrete specimens with stone powder sludges or granite soils as fillers and aggregates indicate 2.5 to 3 fold higher flexural and compressive strengths and lower permeabilities than those with calcium carbonates, which shows their usability as a waterproof liner. Also, the polymer concrete liner with stone powder sludge fillers is more advisable in aspects of utilization of waste sludges than that with other fillers.

  • This study is performed to develop an agricultural hydraulic structure for collecting and draining pipe using polymer concrete. The water permeability of collecting and draining pipe shows an 5.917$\ell$/$\textrm{cm}^2$/h, it is more 190 times as large as in the world maximum rainfall. The external pressure on the collecting and draining pipe is in the range of 1.85~5.25tf/m under 2-edge test, 2.6~6.2tf/m under sand mat and the vertical displacement is in the range of 0.48~1.06mm, 1.01~1.89mm, respectively. Also, an increasing rate of external pressure on the developed pipe is higher than that of PVC pipe to the variation of t/D. Accordingly, the pipe developed in this study will be used widely in agricultural hydraulic structures such as collecting and draining structure.

  • More time is required for consolidating soft clay when its hydraulic conductivity around the vertical drains is reduced by soil disturbance. One of the methods to be proposed to solve such problem is the electro-osmotic flow application. This study presents the experimental results of model tests using a modified oedometer and a large-scale cylinder with a sand drain. Results show that the development of negative excessive pore water pressure due to the DC electrical field in saturated clay can be transformed to additional loads causing more consolidation settlement.

  • The watertightness of concrete is judged by the depth of penetration of water forced in under pressure with the mechanism of flow of seepage water examined theoretically and experimentally. As a result, it is found that in the case of low water pressure approximately 0.15Mpa or less, the flow is Darcy seepage flow, the same as flow in an ordinary sand stratum, whereas in the case of high water pressure, the flow is diffused seepage flow accompanied by internal deformation of concrete. It is suggested that the watertightness of concrete be evaluated by seepage coefficient in the case of the former and diffusion coefficient in the case of the latter.

  • Cemented Sand and Gravel(CSG) is a material made by simple mixing of rock-based raw materials such as excavated soil and riverbed gravel together with cement and water. The use of CSG methodl for cofferdam and large dam is gradually increasing in Japan because a quarry and aggregate plants can be diminished. Also, the CSG method can reduce dam construction cost, construction duration and destruction of environment. In this paper, field test and test construction of CSG method was conducted on Hwabuk Dam. The mechanical properties of CSG, such as compressive strength, extention strength and field permeability test were investigated. From the results of the experimental study, application study of CSG method was discussed.

  • Alluvium is sedimentary stratum and composed of gravel, sand, silt, clay. Permeability of alluvium is the higher. If alluvium have lots of aquifer, will be of great use heat source and heat sink of heat pump. Alluvium aquifer contain the thermal energy of surrounding ground. Also geothermal heat pump using alluvium aquifer reduce expenses than general geothermal heat pump, because geothermal heat pump using alluvium aquifer make use of single well. In this study geothermal heat pump using alluvium aquifer was installed and tested for a building. The heat pump capacity is 30USRT. Temperature of ground water is in $12{\sim}17^{\circ}C$ annually and the quality of the water is as good as living water. The heat pump cooling COP is 4.4 ~ 4.7. The system cooling COP is 3.25 ~ 3.6. This performance is as good as BHE type ground source heat pump.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the physical properties of ultra fine-ground cement for grouting materials. This study investigates the compressive strength of cement paste, homogenized gel and solidified soil matrix with ultra fine-ground cement. Also It is estimated the injection properties of ultra fine-ground cement. From the test results, the compressive strength of ultra fine-ground cement is higher than that of portland cement. The injection properties are sufficient to apply silt-sand soil and minute-cracked rock bed. Also the properties of soil stability like water permeability coefficient are enough to be adapted various grouting specification.

  • When building tunnels beneath riverbeds where very large quantities of groundwater inflow exist, added to high water head the soil supporting conditions are very poor because the soil consists of sand and silt, etc. It is necessary to have grouting and mini pipe roof installed in the region for ground reinforcement to decrease permeability. According to this result of horizontal boring and laboratory soil testing, ground reinforcement was achieved by L.W grouting for range of 3.0 times the tunnel radius, to increase stability of the tunnel we used the ling-cut method, 0.8m for one step excavation, shotcrete with 25cm thick, steel lib with H-$125{\times}125$. and a temporary shotcrete invert 20cm thick was installed to prevent deformation of the tunnel.

  • This research is the result of investigating engineering characteristics of slime generated during construction of deep mixing method. Mechanical characteristics of slime have been studied through literature review and laboratory tests of unconfined compression test, permeability test and settling tests were performed. As result of field observation of slime being generated, slime started to be produced right after flight auger was penetrated into a ground and its amount was increased in progress. Unconfined compressive strength of specimen with slime obtained from in field was measured in the range of $929.7{\sim}3,509.8kN/m^2$ and the value of unconfined compressive strength was found to be changed significantly with mixing ratio of soil, cement and binder. Permeability of them was measured in the range of $4.53{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}6.62{\times}10^{-6}cm/sec$ so that the mixture was appropriate as a impervious barrier. It was also know that the value of permeability was changed with the mixing ratio of binder. As test results of solidifying slime specimen prepared in the laboratory, good quality of cement mixture with coarse soil of sand were produced, compared with fine soils of silt and clay.
