  • Throughout the world, physical and chemical analyses of horticultural substrates are carried out in many different ways at the different laboratories. In Europe, standardization in properties and analytical methods of horticultural substrates has been a topic over the last decades. As a result, the CEN methods as European standard methods for the physical and chemical analyses were introduced and the final draft was reported in 1999 by CEN(Committee for European Standardization). Dry matter and moisture content are analyzed after drying samples at $103^{\circ}C$. Laboratory compacted bulk density is analyzed by determining the weight of sample compacted in the test cylinder with constant volume. Dry bulk density, particle density, total pore space, water volume, air volume and volume shrinkage are determined by saturating, draining and drying the sample using double rings and a sand suction table. pH and EC are analyzed by 1:5(sample:distilled water) extraction method on the basis of volume. Organic matter and ash content are determined after drying and combusting the samples. Now, CEN methods are being regarded almost as European standard methods. Further study needs to be carried out for universal applicability of the CEN methods to all the substrates.

  • This study has been carried out to examine the feasibility of soil washing process for reducing arsenic contamination level of soil around $Dalch\hat{e}n$ Mine. The results of physicochemical tests of the target soil showed that pH was weak alkalic ($pH{\simeq}7.8$), soil texture was coarse sand, and organic contents (5.7%) and CEC (Cation exchange capacity; 21.5 meq/100 g) were similar with those of soils generally found in Korea. Contamination levels of arsenic were found to over 201 mg/kg which exceed the Korea standard levels of countermeasure and concern. To investigate chemical partitioning of heavy metals, sequential extraction procedures were adopted and it was found that arsenic was predominantly associated with the residual fraction among five fractional forms as much as over 85%, which is demonstrating that only less than 15% of all might be vulnerable to a selected washing agents. Among 6 kinds of washing agents applied on the screening for arsenic-contaminated soil, HCl and $H_3PO_4$ solution were selected as promising washing agents. In comparison with HCl and $H_3PO_4$ solutions for arsenic washing by kinetic experiment in the change of pH, soil-solution ratio, temperature, and washing solution concentration, $H_3PO_4$ solution was determined to best one of agents tested, which showed faster washing rate than HCl to accomplish regulatory goal.

  • The controversy is becoming a hot issue after informed that the water release from Canadian oil sands tailings may initiate within a few years. The surface-mined bitumen extraction in open pit generates wastewater inevitably, which has been conveyed to store in tailings ponds. Currently, the size of tailings pond is getting seriously larger. It is known that tailings treatment is very difficult because the generation of MFT (mature fine tailings) layer is hardly processable. It would be the key process to separate solids and liquid placed within MFT where fine particles are well dispersed. In this paper, the surface-mined bitumen extraction process was first introduced, and followed by presenting the components of tailings as well as the characteristics of MFT. In addition, MFT process options were evaluated. It is expected that successful MFT treatments may be achieved by dewatering process using effective polymer flocculants in near future.

  • To use ferro copper slag as aggregate in the construction, an evaluation upon the two kinds of ferro copper slag being produced was conducted to determine the basic physical, and mechanical properties, chemical component and environmental noxiousness. As a result of experiment, it was found that two kinds of ferro copper slag satisfies the physical and mechanical properties of aggregate, prescribed in KS F 2526, and that in the result of noxious heavy metal eruption test by single bach extraction, no eruption of noxious heavy metal was detected or the eruption was far below the reference value. And mortar test was conducted by replacing sand of 25, 50, 75, 100% and the performance level was presented upon reviewing the fluidity property and variable aspects of unit weight. The increase of strength in accordance with replacement rate of sand was found to be the below than the equivalent level compared to the testing specimens that did not use ferro copper slag, but those of 25% replacement rate was above than 0%. Thus, two kinds of ferro copper slag, produced in the domestic, were found to be possessing the enough physical properties to use as concrete aggregate assuming that used with sand and in particular, it was reviewed to be advantageous in manufacturing concrete or mortar that requires weight.

  • The spudcan requires the suitable design considering the soil, platform, and environmental conditions. Its shape needs to be designed to secure sufficient reaction of soil so that it can prevent overturning accidents. Its shape also has to minimize the installation and extraction time. Even in the same soil condition, the reaction of soil may be different depending on the shape of spud can, mainly the slope of top and bottom plates. Therefore, in this study, the relation between the slope of plates and the reaction of soil with and without water jetting is analyzed to better understand their interactions and correlations. For the investigation, a wind turbine installation jack-up rig (WTIJ) is selected as the target platform and the Gulf of Mexico is considered as the target site. A multi layered (sand overlying two clays) soil profile is applied as the assumed soil condition and the soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis is performed by using ANSYS to analyze the effect of the slope change of the bottom plate and water jetting on the reaction of soil. This kind of investigation and simulation is needed to develop optimal and smart spudcan with water-jetting control in the future.

  • Aggregate is used to produce stable materials like concrete and asphalt and is fundamental to meet the social needs of housing, industry, road, energy and health. A total of 42.35 billion tons of aggregate were produced in 2021 worldwide, an increase of 0.91% compared to the previous year. Among them, 2 billion tons were produced in China, India, European Union and United States, making up to 71.75% of the share. South Korea has witnessed a constant increase in aggregate production, overtaking Mexico and Japan for seventh place with 390 million tons and 0.85% of the share. The industrial sand and gravel produced globally amounted to 352.66 million tons. The top seven countries with the highest production were China, United States, Netherlands, Italy, India, Turkey and France, and their production exceeded 10 million tons and held a share of 74.69%. Exports of natural rock recorded $21.68 billion in 2021, increased by $2.3 billion compared to the previous year, while exports of artificial rock increased by $2.66 billion to $13.59 billion. Exports of sand reached $1.71 billion with United States, Netherlands, Germany and Belgium being the four countries with the highest exports of sand. The four countries exported more than $100 million in sand and took up 57.70% of the total amount. Exports of gravel totaled $2.75 billion, with China, Norway, Germany, Belgium, France and Austria in the lead, making up to 48.30% of the total share. The aggregate quarry started to surge in the 1950s due to the change in people's lifestyle such as population growth, urbanization and infrastructure delvelopment. Demand for aggregate is also skyrocketing to prevent land reclamation and flood caused by sea-level rise. Demand for aggregate, which was around 24 gigatons in 2011, is expected to double to 55 gigatons in 2060. However, it is likely that aggregate extraction will heavily damage the ecosystem and the world will eventually face a shortage of aggregate followed by tense social conflict.

  • Mineral carbonation is a technology in which carbonates are synthesized from minerals including serpentine and olivine, and industrial wastes such as slag and cement, of which all contain calcium or magnesium when reacted with carbon dioxide. This study aims to develop the mineral carbonation technology for commercialization, which can reduce environmental burden and process cost through the reduction of carbon dioxide using steel slag and the slag reuse after calcium extraction. Calcium extraction was conducted using NH4Cl solution for air-cooled slag and convert slag, and ${\geq}98%$ purity calcium carbonate was synthesized by reaction with calcium-extracted solution and carbon dioxide. And we conducted experimentally to minimize the quantity of by-product, the slag residue after calcium extraction, which has occupied large amount of weight ratio (about 80-90%) at the point of mineral carbonation process using slag. The slag residue was used to replace silica sand in the manufacture of cement panel, and physical properties including compressive strength and flexible strength of panel using the slag residue and normal cement panel, respectively, were analyzed. The calcium concentration in extraction solution was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) was also used to identify the surface morphology of calcium carbonate, and XRD was used to analyze the crystallinity and the quantitative analysis of calcium carbonate. In addition, the cement panel evaluation was carried out according to KS L ISO 679, and the compressive strength and flexural strength of the panels were measured.

  • Non-conventional energy is considered as important future energy source, as conventional energy has limitation for its capacity. The demand on value added process in heavy oil/oil sand bitumen is increasing in particular. Solvent Deasphalting (SDA) process for Deasphalted Oil (DAO) is used as heavy oil upgrading process in existing refinery process. SDA process for heavy oil upgrading has been already commercialized by leading countries. SDA R&D projects have been carried out actively by those countries. In this study, patent analysis for SDA technology development was carried out. From 1970's, when SDA patents were applied, the patents in Korea, USA, Japan, Canada and Europe were searched and distributed to extraction, recovery, solvent and etc. 334 patents were selected relating to heavy oil upgrading SDA process. The application status of SDA process patents showed a tendency to increase slightly. The number of patent applied was USA patent 131 (39%), Canada patent 83 (25%), Japan patent 35 (11%) and Korea patent 6 (2%). It will be necessary for efficient use of energy resource to support SDA R&D by government.

  • In many countries, recycling coal ashes as backfill materials for subsided lands, abandoned mine tunnels, and road pipeline constructions by making low-strength concretes with minimal amounts of cement is frequently considered for massive treatment of coal ashes. This study investigates the variation of heavy metals in the concrete test pieces prepared for the cases of using only Portland cement as binding material, fly ash as a replacement of the cement, sand as aggregates, and disposed ashes in the ash ponds as a replacement of aggregates. Heavy metal contents were measured based on the aqua regia extraction technique following the Korean Standard for Fair Testing of Soil Contamination and the influences of each materials on the total heavy metal contents were also assessed. Results show that the cement has the highest Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations than any other materials. Therefore, the test pieces show significant concentration decreases for those metals when the cement was replaced by fly ash. Ponded ash shows low concentrations relative to fly ash in most of the parameters but shows higher Cu and Ni, and lower Pb levels than the sand aggregate. In overall, heavy metal levels of the test pieces are regulated by mixing among the used materials. Test pieces prepared during this study always show concentrations much lower than the Worrisome Level of Soil Contamination (Area 1), which was designated by the Soil Environment Conservation Act of Korea.

  • To evaluate geochemical characteristics of surface sediments in Samcheok Port, the distribution characteristics of particle sizes, organic matters and heavy metals were investigated. The sediments showed a mixed property of sand, silt, and clay, however fine-grains dominated at the inner port and coarse-grains dominated at the outer port. The organic (COD, TOC, and IL) contamination of the sediment at the inner port were higher than that of the outer port, and the concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus at the inner port was higher than those of the outer port. Also, heavy metals contamination of surface sediments at the inner port was higher than those of the outer port (except for As). From the results of high organic matter concentrations and C/N ratio at the inner port, it is considered that the contamination of organic matters was mainly derived from the land. The correlation analysis among the particle size, chemical composition, and heavy metals resulted in high correlation between silt-clay and heavy metals, and between organic matters and heavy metals. The sequential extraction results of heavy metals showed the sum of exchangeable, carbonate, and oxide fractions of Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, and As were 14.8, 49.8, 39.1, 32.2, 51.8 and 26.6%, respectively.
