  • In this study, the reliable and simple analysis method was proposed to predict the settlement characteristic of composite ground in stage of design and construction of sand compaction pile (SCP). Model parameters could be obtained by the optimization process based on genetic algorithm. In order to examine the proposed method, laboratory consolidation tests on the settlement characteristic of SCP composite ground were performed for various replacement ratio of sand such as 0 (no replacement), 20, 36, and 56%. The proposed model showed very good agreements with measured data in the relation of void ratio-log scaled stress and time-compression far each replacement ratio.

  • Granular compaction pile has the load bearing capacity of the soft ground increase and has the settlement of foundation built on the reinforced soil reduce. The granular compaction group piles also have the consolidation of the soft ground accelerate and prevent the liquefaction caused by earthquake using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is not widely used in Korea. The granular compaction piles are constructed by grouping them with a raft system. The confining pressure at the center of bulging failure depth is a major variable in estimating the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction piles. Therefore, a share of loading is determined considering the effect of load concentration ratio between the granular compaction piles and surrounding soils, and the variation of the magnitude of the confining pressure. In this study, a method for the determination of the ultimate bearing capacity is proposed to apply a change of the horizontal pressure considering bulging failure depth, surcharge, and loaded area. Also, the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction pile is evaluated on the basis of previous study(Kim et al., 1998) on the estimation of the ultimate bearing capacity and compared with the results obtained from laboratory scale model tests and DEM numerical analysis using the PFC-2D program.

  • The ground work with of the research is constructed by a SCP method to improve clay ground in the sedimentary layer and sand ground in the reclamation layer at the same time as a reclaimed soft ground by reclaiming deep depth. Improved fine-grained soils in the sand ground decrease the ground improvement effect and have an influence on replacement ratio of SCP method. Fine-Grained soils which advances in sand ground reduces a from improvement effect, Makes affect in replacement ratio of SCP method. In this study, consideration about replacement ratio of sand ground, Tried to observe affects in replacement ratio of fine-grained soils SCP method of dredging reclamation ground. The result, replacement ratio which follows in the Japan Geotechnical Society experience-chart(1988) recording where fine-grained soils content will increase feebly, was visible the aspect which increases progressively, replacement ratio in compliance with Gibbs and Holts(1973) methods according to fine-grained soils increase is visible the tendency which decreases gradually with the enemy. Specially, according to case fine-grained content of Mizuno(1987) methods increases, replacement ratio suddenly was showing the trend which rises from of 50% and according to fine-grained soils increase was overestimated.

  • Recently, there are an increasing number of studies on the method of wrapping the outer wall of granular piles with geosynthetic fibers such as geotextile or geogrid that has a certain level of tensile strength as an alternative method for the ground improvement techniques. In this study, triaxial compression tests are performed on the sand and clay specimen encased with various textiles to evaluate the reinforcing effect with regard to the tensile strength of the textile. Furthermore, triaxial compression tests are performed on the clay specimen inserted by sand only and sand encased with geosynthetics to compare behavioral differences between the conventional sand compaction pile and geosynthetic encased sand pile with regard to the replacement ratio, ${\alpha}_s$ and the tensile strength of the geosynthetics. Based on the experimental results, the strength enhancement due to the textile is affected by the longitudinal tensile strength rather than the transverse one of the applied textile. The effect of the confinement by the textile encasement results in the large increase of the cohesions. The overall behaviors, such as shear strength, pore pressure parameter at failure and stress ratio, of the geosynthetic encased sand pile is quite different from those of the conventional sand compaction pile.

  • This study describes the investigation based on centrifuge model tests for the clay ground improved by sand compaction pile. In order to clarify the failure behavior of composite ground improved by partly and fully penetrated SCPs. And, in order to compare the effect of the penetration ratio and the replacement area ratio, nine of the centrifuge tests were carried out. From the test results, settlement reduce ratio in the fully penetrated SCPs ground is bigger than that in the partly penetrated SCPs ground. It is also evaluated that angle of the failure of composite ground improved by SCP are 26, 25, $34^{\circ}$ for As=10%, 22, $29^{\circ}$ for As=30%. And as a result of rigid loading tests, surface displacement decreases linearly with the partly penetration ratio increased.

  • The paper processed settlement analysis using Finite Elements Method(FEM). Because Stress Distribution Ratio has to be decreased, for settlement analysis of soft clay deposit improved by sand compaction piles(SCP). Back analysis was processed comparing the measured settlements of laboratory model tests and finite element analysis where the SCP treated area was assumed as mixed ground with clay deposit rather than being a composite ground. The paper proposes a methodology which employs a compression index($C_c$) for settlement analysis of soft clay deposit improved by sand compaction piles from the back analysis. This approach is applied to a field measurement case(A revetment founded on the SCP improved clay deposit with the replacement ratio of 45%).

  • This paper is the results of experimental and numerical works on the investigating design factors influencing the bearing capacity, the ratio of stress concentration, and the failure mechanism of the clay ground improved with sand compaction piles (SCP). In order to find the behavior of the clay ground improved with SCP, extensive centrifuge model experiments were carried out for each of the SCP replacement ratio of 20, 40, and $70\%$, the non-plastic fine contents in sand of 5, 10, and $15\%$, and the ratio of the improved width to the loaded area (W/B) of 1, 2, and 3. The commertially available software of FEM, CRISP, was used to analyze test results by performing numerical estimations. In these numerical analyses the sand compaction piles and the clay ground were simulated as a linear elastic and plastic constitutive model and the modified Cam-clay model, based on Critical State Soil Mechanics, respectively.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement, to reduce settlement, and to increase bearing capacity for soft ground under quay, sand compaction pile method (SCP) has usually been applied. SCP-reinforced ground is composite soil which consists of the sand pile and the surrounding soft soil. One of main important considerations in design and analysis for SCP-reinforced soils is stress concentration ratio according to area replacement ratio. In this paper, the numerical analysis was conducted to investigate characteristics of stress concentration ratio in composite ground. It was found that stress concentration ratio of composite ground is not constant as well as depends on several factors such as area replacement ratio, depth of soft soil, and consolidation process. The values of stress concentration ratio increase during loading stage due to stress transfer of composite soil, and reach up to 2.5∼12 according to area replacement ratio at the end of construction. After the end of consolidation, however, these values are converged to 2.5 to 6.0 irrespective of area replacement ratio due to increase in effective stress of soft soil during consolidation process.

  • Granular compaction piles increase the load bearing capacity of the soft ground and reduce the settlement of fecundation built on the reinforced soil. Also the granular compaction piles accelerate the consolidation of soft ground using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. In the present study, the estimation procedure for the ultimate bearing capacity of randomly installed granular compaction pile group is proposed. Also, carbon rod tests have been peformed for verifying the group effect of granular compaction piles and the behavior characteristics such as bulging failure zone on granular compaction piles. From the test results, it is found that bulging failure shape of granular compaction piles was conical shape and the ultimate bearing capacity increased as the spacing of piles became gradually narrow. Also, from the proposed method in this study, the optimal locations of granular compaction piles with various installed cases are analyzed. The results were shown that the bearing capacity was increased in the case concentrated on the central part of pile group.
