  • Purpose - The study's aim is to assess performance quality delivered through a performance management system. The case study first measures the effectiveness of the present performance management system of Bhushan Steel Ltd. (BSL), and then secondarily analyzes the employee training impact. Research design, data, and methodology - A case study research approach using a survey was followed. The final sample size was 50, with a simple random sampling technique used. Primary data came from the company itself and the secondary from books, the Internet, journals, etc. Results - BSL employee appraisals are used for many developmental aspects such as competence in the present job, improvements, performance development, and training needs. The results indicate that individual performance can improve if employees perceive the system as more transparent (i.e., not so confidential). Conclusions - Overall, the BSL employees think that the company appraisal system is useful; however, to make it better the company has to improve many aspects including appraisals based on supervisor observations. The company could use a self-appraisal and a 360-appraisal approach to improve such assessments.

  • In this paper, a family of estimators for the finite population variance investigated by Srivastava and Jhajj (1980) is studied under two different situations of random non-response considered by Tracy and Osahan (1994). Asymptotic expressions for the biases and mean squared errors of members of the proposed family are obtained; in addition, an asymptotic optimum estimator(AOE) is also identified. Estimators suggested by Singh and Joarder (1998) are shown to be members of the proposed family. A correction to the Singh and Joarder (1998) results is also presented.

  • Four times of field survey were carried out to collect fish samples at six stations in Shinpo district, North Korea in October 1997, July 1998, May and October 2002. Sampling stations were located in upstream, middle and down of the southern river of Bukchong and three brackish lakes of lake Hommanpo, Daein and Hyunkum, respectively. A total of 29 species belonging to 11 families occurred. Family Cyprinidae showed the prosperity in species number of 28% among total species occurred. No natural monument fishes or rare species were captured. Ten commercial fishes, five anadromous ones and five brackish ones were identified. Feeding habits divided fish fauna with 11 carnivores, two herbivores and seven omnivorous ones. In the river, 20 species belonging to seven families inhabited, 18 species of 6 families in lake Homanpo, 21 of seven III Hyunkum and 23 of eight in Daein, respectively. Ecological indices of richness, diversity and evenness were highest in lake Daein and dominance index was highest in lake Hyunkum.

  • Numerous foreign studies document perceived difference of the public toward male and female doctors, but little is known about the way Korean college students view the gender of the doctors. This study investigates whether or not college students evaluate the technical and socio-psychological skills differently depending on the gender of the doctors. This study also tests the association between the gender of respondents and the gender of doctors of their choice for several types of diseases. The 440 college students at one campus were selected using systematic stratified random sampling technique and were interviewed by questionnaire survey. Findings indicate that while the scores of technical skills are in favor of male doctors, the scores of socio-psychological skills are favorable to female doctors. We also find that there Is a statistically significant relationship between the gender of respondents and the gender of doctors of their choice.

There were statistically significant differences in appearance stress and interpersonal relations according to type of eating attitude. Also, appearance stress, interpersonal relations, and depression were significant predictors explaining 39% of the variance in eating attitude. Conclusion: The results indicate that the factors influencing eating attitude should be considered when developing nursing interventions to change poor eating attitude for women undergraduates.

Especially, optimal stimulation level of impulse consumers is significantly higher than their life-style stimulation level. This means that impulse consumers are consider to a stimulation seeker. 3) The high-impulse consumers have high exploration through shopping, high information seeking behavior, high interpersonal communication level, high risk taking behavior and particulary high sensory exploratory patterns in purchase exploratory behaviors than that of low-impulse consumers.
