High Frame Rate VGA CMOS Image Sensor using Three Step Single Slope Column-Parallel ADCs

  • This paper proposes column-parallel three step Single Slope Analog-to-Digital Converter (SS-ADC) for high frame rate VGA CMOS Image Sensors (CISs). The proposed three step SS-ADC improves the sampling rate while maintaining the architecture of the conventional SS-ADC for high frame rate CIS. The sampling rate of the three-step ADC is increased by a factor of 39 compared with the conventional SS-ADC. The proposed three-step SS-ADC has a 12-bit resolution and 200 kS/s at 25 MHz clock frequency. The VGA CIS using three step SS-ADC has the maximum frame rate of 200 frames/s. The total power consumption is 76 mW with 3.3 V supply voltage without ramp generator buffer. A prototype chip was fabricated in a $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS process.

Effect of the sampling time of high-frequency ZOH and a physical damper on stable haptic interaction (고주파 영차홀드의 샘플링 주기와 물리적 댐퍼가 안정적인 햅틱 상호작용에 미치는 영향)

  • Stable haptic interaction with virtual environments is essential not only for the safety of the user but also for improving the immersion of the user. If the coefficient of a virtual spring is increased, the system becomes unstable. Therefore, the coefficient of the virtual spring is limited. The haptic system with the high-frequency zero-order-hold (HF-ZOH) is proposed to enhance the stability margin of a virtual spring. In this paper, the relationship among the sampling period of HF-ZOH, the coefficient of the physical damper, and the maximum stable margin of the virtual spring is analyzed. The lager the coefficient of the physical damper is, the shorter the sampling period of the HF-ZOH is, the larger the stable region of the virtual spring becomes. If the ratio N is larger than 40, the stable region of the proposed method is about three times to eight times that of the previous method, according to the coefficient of the physical damper. Hence the method enables to improve the user's realism in virtual environments.

  • Multirate filtering process on the biological signals like Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Photoplethysmogram (PPG) can be defined as the digital signal processing algorithm in which the sampling rate varies to omit or interpolate the intermediate values between the sampled data. With this aim, we suggest a new multirate filtering algorithm by deleting the extraneous data to eliminate the unwanted degradations such as granular noise due to the usage of high sampling frequency and simultaneously to detect the fiducial features of ECG and PPG with reducing the complexity of resolving fiducial points such as R-peak, Pulse peak and Pulse Transit Time (PTT). After the experimental simulations performed, we can conclude the fact that we can detect the fiducial features of ECG and PPG signal in terms of R-peak, Pulse peak and PTT without the loss of accuracy even if we do not maintain the original sampling frequency.

Frequency stabilization of diode lasers using a ultra-stable reference cavity (초안정 기준광진기를 이용한 다이오드 레이저의 주파수 안정화)

  • We have stabIhzed the laser frequency of a commercial dIode laser using a ULE (Ultra-low expansion material) reference cavIty and the cunent modulation charactenstics of the dIode itself The liuewIdth of the frce running laser was about a 1 MHz (rms) for a sampling time of 1 s and the drift rate was 300 kHz/s. Vvhen the laser is locked to oue sIde of the transmission signal from the ULE reference cavity, the lincwidth was reduced to 46 kHz (nus) for a sampling time longer than 10 ms. The root Allan variance was less than 2 kHz for a sampling time langeI than10 ms. 10 ms.

  • Popular methods for extracting a text region in video images are in general based on analysis of a whole image such as merge and split method, and comparison of two frames. Thus, they take long computing time due to the use of a whole image. Therefore, this paper suggests the faster method of extracting a text region without processing a whole image. The proposed method uses line sampling methods, FFT and neural networks in order to extract texts in real time. In general, text areas are found in the higher frequency domain, thus, can be characterized using FFT The candidate text areas can be thus found by applying the higher frequency characteristics to neural network. Therefore, the final text area is extracted by verifying the candidate areas. Experimental results show a perfect candidate extraction rate and about 92% text extraction rate. The strength of the proposed algorithm is its simplicity, real-time processing by not processing the entire image, and fast skipping of the images that do not contain a text.

  • To monitor the wind-induced responses of buildings, conventional real-time kinematic (RTK) methods based on two global positioning system (GPS) receivers (e.g., a reference and a rover) are widely applied. However, these methods can encounter problems such as difficulty in securing and maintaining a space for a reference station. With the recently developed virtual reference station (VRS)-RTK approach, the position of a structure can be measured using only a rover receiver. In this study, to evaluate the applicability of VRS-RTK methods in monitoring the lateral structural responses of frame structures, we performed free vibration tests on a one-story frame model (the first natural frequency of 1 Hz) and a three-story frame model (the first natural frequency of 0.85 Hz). To assess the reliability of the displacement and acceleration responses measured by the GPS, we performed a concurrent measurement using laser displacement sensors and an accelerometer. The accelerometer results were consistent with the GPS measurements in terms of the time history and frequency content. Furthermore, to derive an appropriate sampling rate for the continuous monitoring of buildings, the errors in the displacement responses were evaluated at different GPS sampling rates (5, 10, 20 Hz). The results indicate that as the sampling rate increased, the errors in the displacement responses decreased. In addition, in the three-story model, all modal components (first, second, and third modes) could be recorded at a sampling rate of 20 Hz.

  • In a conventional digital beamformer received signal were sampled at least Nyquist rate of its maximum frequency. But it is wide band signal and its coherent sum must be obtained, the sampling clock of about $8f_o$ and $16f_o$ is necessary or high quality images. This paper described how image qualities are varied according to sampling clock. Mainly, we compared the SDF(Sampled Delay Focusing) that had maximum precision of $8f_o$ with $16f_o$ sampling system and analyze its characteristics.

  • In this paper, a clock-data recovery using a 1/8-rate phase detector is proposed. The use of a conventional full or half-rate phase detector requires relatively higher frequency of a recovered clock, which is a burden on the design of a sampling circuit and a VCO. In this paper, a 1/8-rate phase detector is used to lower the frequency of the recovered clock and a linear equalizer is used as a input circuit of a phase detector to reduce the jitter of the recovered clock. A test chip fabricated in a 0.13-${\mu}m$ CMOS process is measured at 1.5-GHz for a 3-Gb/s PRBS input and 1.2-V power supply.

  • The passive ranging estimation techniques using a focused beamformer have been studied under the water. It is well known that the passive ranging estimation method using a focused beamformer is excellently evaluated. Among these, the passive ranging sonar is known to have a good performance under low signal-to-noise. ratio. However, its performance is degraded in multi-source environments. In this paper, we proposed the technique using dual focused beamformers to estimate the range. And when the sampling frequency is low, it is very difficult to steer the focused beam to the desired direction, as a result of this, the low performance occurs because of a distorted beam pattern. In this paper, we study the effect of sampling rate on passive ranging by using focused beamformer. And we verified the performance of the proposed method via computer simulation.

  • In this paper, the frequency compensator for digital protective relay is introduced. Due to sudden appearance of generation-load or fault in power system, the frequency can deviate from its nominal value. The Orthogonal filter adopted to digital protective relay is exposed to the problem. Therefore, the frequency variation makes a difficult to protective function and power measurement in digital protective relay. The essential property of the proposed algorithm presented is its outstanding immunity to both signal orthogonal component magnitudes and DFT filter gain variations which ensures below 0.05Hz accuracy of estimation. Additionally, the proposed method has excellent characteristics with low signal sampling rate. Based on the frequency estimation, author design under frequency protection relay for generator and verifies its performance with several experimental tests.
