  • Saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifer was investigated using a laboratory model. Salt-wedge profiles were reproduced in a porous media tank 140 cm long, 70 cm high, and 10 cm wide. The experiments were performed with various conditions of porous media hydraulic conductivity, salinity, and ground surface slope to assess relationships on salt wedge location and inclination. Salt-wedge profiles induced by saltwater intrusion were observed in porous media equilibrium state, and compared with previously derived formulas of the Glover (1959), Henry (1959) and Strack (1976). It was found that salt-wedge shape and formations were affected by the water level ratio ($H_F/H_S$) due to high hydraulic conductivity, saltwater salinity and ground surface slope. High $H_F/H_S$ of porous media having high hydraulic conductivity shifted the saltwater interface toward the saltwater reservoir. Increasing surface slope of the porous media caused the salt-wedge profile inclination to decrease. Saltwater salinity also contributed to the location of saltwater interface, yet the impact was not more significant than hydraulic conductivity.

  • Salt wedge into the river from the sea or fresh water flume (fresh wedge) in the ocean from the sea has density current characteristics. However, when temperature and salinity simultaneously determine the density of wedges, one of salinity and temperature can distributed in the reversed profiles against gravity, even though the density profile is stable. In this case, the double diffusive process is critical in determining mixing rate. The present work studies relative contribution of shear driven mechanical mixing component and double diffusive layering process, when warm salty denser water is introduced into the cold fresh lighter water column. Laboratory experiment releases warm salty denser water into cold fresh lighter water controlling discharge amount to achieve the steady state of density current. When longitudinal density rate becomes 15, the released amount ratio of salt and heat changes sharply and in the releasing point, vigorous mixing occurs with increase of discharged amount due to double diffusion. Double diffusion distabilizes gravitational stability and enhances the mixing rate up to $6{\times}10$ times at the lower density ratio comparing to the higher density ratio.

  • An experimental study is performed in order to catch the characteristics of the flow field at arrested salt wedge, using a rectangular open channel. Arrested salt wedge is generally so stable that the observations are easy, but velocities and interfacial waves are measured with the aid of visualization method, by injection of fluorescent dyes. The density interface, which is defined as the zone of maximum density variation with depth, exists in about 0.5 cm below the visual interface, and vertical density profile is quite well satisfied with Homeborn model. Interfacial layer has high turbulent intensity and its thickness decreases as the overall Richardson number increases and has magnitude of roughly 17% of upper layer. Cross-sectional velocity distribution just shows the influence of a side-wall friction and in the upper layer vertical velocity profile also becomes uniformly as Reynolds number increases, but in the lower layer it shows nearly parabolic type. Supposes that we divide salt wedge into three domains, that is, river mouth, intermediate and tip zone, entertainment coefficient is small at the intermediate zone and large at the river mouth and the tip zone. River mouth or intermediate zone has comparatively stable interface and capillary wave therefore s produced and propagated downstream. On the other hand, tip zone is very unstable, cusping ripple or bursting ripple is then produced incessantly. Arrested salt wedge form is nearly linear and has no relation to densimetric Froude number and Reynolds number.

  • This study is intended to examine the relationship between the magnitude of sand spit in the estuary of the stream and improvement of the quality of water that flaws into the sea, by means of hydraulic experimentation. In order to determine the effect of improvements of water quality when river flow is stagnant, the estuary flows into the sea through the small sand spit, and a two-dimensional physical model experiment was carried out. Distribution of concentration was decreased in response to an increase in length of sand spit and time. The experimental results are compared with theoretical results, based on the solution of the equation. Also, there are functions of influx prevention of salt wedge and purification of pollution water due to sand spit in small estuary.

  • In this paper, we describe a study on the relationship between spectral sensitization and photographic characteristics of color paper. The photographic emulsion used in this study is a green-sensitizing emulsion. U.V maximum absorption peak value of 9-phenyl-5,5'-diphenyl-3,3'-bis(3-sulfopropyl)benzoxazolo carbocyanine triethyl ammonium salt was observed 507nm, and wedge spectrograms maximum peak value of color paper added dye to photographic emulsion was shown 553nm. As compared with the absorption peak of the dye in methanol solution, the sensitizing peaks of 9-phenyl-5,5'-diphenyl-3,3'-bis(3-sulfopropyl)benzoxazolo carbocyanine triethyl ammonium salt have red shifts of 46nm. The photographic characteristics of green-sensitizing emulsion were obtained contrast(2.6), speed(48-57), fog(0.08). Therefore, benzoxazolo carbocyanine dye is of industrial importance as green-sensitizing dye in the spectral sensitization of photographic emulsion.

  • In order to validate the variable aperture channel model that can deal with the non-uniform How rate in flow domain, migration experiments of conservative tracer were performed in two artificial fractures, a parallel and a wedge-shaped fracture. These different fracture shapes were designed to give different flow pattern. The fractures were made from a transparent acrylic plastic plate and a granite slab with dimensions of 10 $\times$ 61 $\times$ 61 cm. Uranine (Fluorescein sodium salt) was used as a conservative tracer. The volumetric flow rates of uranine feed solution were 30 mL/ hr, giving a mean residence time in the fracture of approximately 24 hours for the parallel fracture and 34 hours for the wedge-shaped fracture. The migration plumes of uranine were photographed to obtain profiles in space and time for movement of a tracer in fractures. The photographed migration plume was greatly affected by the geometric shape of fractures. The variable aperture channel model could have predicted the experimental results for the parallel fracture with a large accuracy. It is expected that the variable aperture channel model would be effective to predict the transport of the contaminant, especially, with the flow rate variation in a fracture.

  • The purpose of this study is to offer the basic data of the tidal river development program by grasping the diffusion between the high density-sea water and the low density-fresh water in the tidal river. The tidal range of Hyungsan river which flows at Youngil bay in Pohang was selected to analysis the phenomenon of density current. The results obtained are as follows ; The tide of Youngil bay was one time a day, 0.104m in high tide difference and 0.085m in mean tidy difference. The change of sea level by tide was negligible. The volume of reserved water by sea water was $2,700,000m^3$ and available water of irrigation was $1,200,000m^3$ that salt density is below $750{\mu}{\mho}/cm$ out of total volume. Salt intrusion phenomenon by density current was a little water level change, however, it become a salt wedge type by the much salt invasion during the spring tide and it makes a well-mixed type by the retreating salt wedge during the neap tide. As long as there were some density differences between sea water and fresh water, net upstream flow was existed along the bottom of water way from the estuary to the upstream channel.

  • From available data, the movement of the cold water in the Korea Strait was investigated. The cold water forms an undercurrent with a speed of 0.10knots near Ulgi in June. Sometimes it reaches a speed of 0.35knots. The cold water forms a sharp wdege in the western channel like a salt wedge in an estuary. The calculated volume transport of the cold water is 17,135 cubic meters per second in June. The external influences are also discussed.

  • The behavior characteristics of the saltwater intrusion in the Seomjin River Estuary by the inflow of fresh water were analysed by the field observation using CTD in the neap tide in January, June, and August 2013 as well as a numerical model, EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code). As a result, Seomjin River Estuary is found that the saltwater intrusion is sensitive to the tide and tidal and freshwater flow. The results of field observation and numerical model were similar in the range of salt, but the results of salt wedge distribution were quite different. The observation of tide and tidal current as well as hydrographic surveying the Seomjin River Estuary will be jointly conducted for the accurate analysis.

  • In this study, a hydraulic model test, to which Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system applied, was used to determine the hydrodynamic characteristics of the advection-diffusion of saltwater according to bottom conditions (impermeable/permeability, diameter, and inclination) and the difference of the initial salt. Considering quantitative and qualitative results from the experiment, the characteristics of the density current were discussed. As an experimental result, the advection-diffusion mechanism of salinity was examined by the shape of saltwater wedge and the flow structure of density currents with various bottom conditions. The vertical salt concentration obtained from the experiment was used as quantitative data to calculate the diffusion coefficient that was used in the numerical model of the advection-diffusion of saltwater.
