This study aims to suggest a containerization plan for non-standardized cargo; it also reveals the significance of containerization in facilitating freight inducement and cargo creation for increasing the competitiveness of the Gwangyang port container terminal and checking excessive competition among terminal operators. Therefore, this study suggested a containerization plan and its significance by dividing 14 items, ones with low containerization ratios or undergoing containerization, bulk, and liquid cargoes. In the case of general cargo, it will be necessary to raise the utilization rate by remodeling a general container or improving cargo loading techniques. In the case of bulk cargo, it will be necessary to exploit the benefits of containerization in preventing product deterioration due to rain, facilitating the sale of small orders, ensuring clean cargo handling, and reducing logistics cost, among others. In the case of liquid cargo, it will be necessary to order and sell liquid cargo in small quantities by using superior quality, safe, and durable Flexitank or Flexibag products, which offer transportation convenience and reduce time and costs.

The depth, width and alignment of fairway that are main port water facilities should be designed considering the various elements including particulars of design ships, weather and sea conditions around fairway and method of ship-handling. However not only the existing Japanese design standard for fairway and also those of other countries do not take into consideration of such kind of elements and no design standard is made by quantitative analysis. In this circumstance the new design standard (Approach Channels, A Guide for Design) depending on classified various elements and quantitative analysis was proposed in 1997 by PIANC and IAPH. But it was proved that calculated values according to this standard were unfounded and had some problems to output the discontinuous value by small difference of calculation condition because the each value fur each element was simply added. And also it is hard to apply this standard to the design of port water facilities in Japan because this [A Guide for Design] is the design standard for long channels in European port. The proposal of more reasonable Japanese standard will be expected by applying the study result of naval architecture and navigation and by the cooperation of ship operators to use fairway, naval architects to built ships and civil engineers to dredge fairway. The concept of a fairway in 'Design standard fur fairway in next generation' is defined as passage for approach channel) and traffic lane designated by light buoys as navigable water for safe navigation. In 'Design standard for fairway in next generation' depth, width and alignment are picked up among many design elements of a fairway. Design method for those elements is shown based on design ships and navigational environments. This standard shows the method of design for each dimension depending on characteristic on design ship and weather and sea condition. On the other hand, in case of existing fairway, it is possible to decide the size of ship and navigation criteria by opposite analysis.
Competition between ports around the world is intensifying to attract transshipment cargo. However, recently, there have been concerns about the departure of transshipment cargo volume at Busan Port, such as the lifting of the cabotage policy in China's shipping sector and the implementation of a safe fare system. In terms of operation, terminal congestion and vehicle waiting time are seriously occurring due to imbalance in the transshipment volume of each terminal and vehicles concentrated in a specific time period. In this paper, we propose a method of inter-terminal transportation (ITT) using buffer space to solve the problem caused by inefficient ITT systems and presented a mixed integer programming (MIP) for the problem. The effect of using the buffer space was analyzed for various work volumes and capacity fluctuation ranges by applying the terminal congestion pattern and ITT vehicle in/out pattern based on the Busan New Port data.
When a ship is running in following and quartering seas and on a crest with the ship′s length being nearly the same as the wave length, ship′s stability will be lost most; "T" shape crests with highly concentrated energy will appear during the process of transformation from irregular waves to regular ones, and the ship may be under continuous impact of large waves for a long period of time; Synchronism will also appear when the ship′s natural period of rolling and period of encounter are close to each other. For safe navigation, proper stability should be well ensured, proper speed and course chosen with speed under 1.8L1/2 kn (L is the ship′s length), initial listing avoided, special attention paid to steering.
The most crucial factor in membrane LNG ships to ensure sage operations, is how to effectively control tank pressure at the time of excessive generation of boil off gas (BOG). When the ships carry out tank cool down with her retaining heel prior to arrival at loading port, the vessel encounters the critical situation of excessive BOG and high tank pressure that can lead to high degree of risk. This is to provide one of the best ways to secure safe and effective LNG ship operations focusing on the detailed methods of tank cool down to achieve ATR(Arrival Temperature requirement) without building up high tank pressure and excessive BOG and calculating the appropriate heel quantity to be unutilized for tank cool down and fuel during ballast voyage.
In this study, as a part developing an unmanned container terminal (UCT), Ive designed and implemented an Autonomous Ground Vehicle (AGV) that can deliver containers in the port fast and safely as they are scheduled. It is preferable to research the intelligent UCT/AGV for delivering containers all day long without causing any trouble. For the sake of safe and fast AGV driving, we implemented a multiple-sensor system with vision, ultrasonic, and IR sensors and we adapted the hight-speed wireless LAN that satisfies the IEEE 802.11 Standard for hi-directional communication between the main processor in AGV and a host computer. The Pentium-III processor board mounted on the bottom frame in AGV combines and computes the information from sensors and controls the AGV driving. There are also the 80C196KC micro-controllers to control the actuating and steering motors. In addition, a steering function that is defined newly in this paper is heavily concerned in the mechanical design, and it plays an important role when AGV moves along a curve. Experimental results show the fast and safe delivery operations are possible with this UCT/AGV
Sometimes, an evacuation should be executed from a ship for many reasons. This study considers on emergency evacuation on fire in a ship, one of the many reasons for evacuation. Due to the characteristic of fire, the most loss of life is known to be caused by suffocation resulted by smoke. To reduce the suffocation by smoke, the time available for evacuation should be improved for the higher survival rate of crews. In this study, crews' survival times and Evacuation time are analyzed quantitatively in during fire in the same sealed space in two different cases of the natural ventilation and the forced ventilation.

This paper presents a brief outline of dynamic stability of damaged ship in rough, beam wind and waves. The one degree-of-freedom, linear roll equation is adopted with the effects of damage fluid and external forces, but without the effect of sloshing. We evaluate the dynamic stability in terms of capizing probability based on energy balance mechanics and risk analysis , the method of which was proposed by Umeda [2] to the high speed crafts. As a result, we can predict the dynamic stability quantitatively according to sea state , operating and damage conditions.

According to the remarkable advances in sonar technology, positioning capabilities and computer processing power we can accurately image and explore the seafloor in hydrography. Especially, Multibeam Echo Sounder can provide nearly perfect coverage of the seafloor with high resolution. Since the mid-1990's, Multibeam Echo Sounders have been used for hydrographic surveying in Korea. In this study, new marine data set as an effective decision-making tool in various fields was proposed by visualizing and combining with Multibeam sonar data and marine spatial data sets such as satellite image and digital nautical chart. The proposed method was tested around the port of PyeongTaek-DangJin in the west coast of Korea. The Visualization and fusion methods are described with various marine data sets with processing. We demonstrated that new data set in marine GIS is useful in safe navigation and port management as an efficient decision-making tool.
Yaw-checking and course-keeping ability in IMO's ship manoeuvrability standards are reviewed from the viewpoint of safe navigation. Three kinds of virtual series-ships, which have different course instability, are taken as test models. The numerical simulation on Z-test is carried out in order to examine the correlation between known manoeuvrability in spiral characteristics and various kinds of overshoot angle. Then simulator experiments are executed with series-ships in a curved, narrow waterway by six operators(five active pilots and one ex-captain) in order to examine the correlation between known manoeuvrability and degree of manoeuvring difficulty. IMC criteria for yaw-checking and course-keeping ability are discussed and revised criteria are proposed.
