A Study on the Safe Maneuvering of a G/T 100,000 Ton LNG Vessel by Using Her Control Surface through a Narrow Channel

  • Nawadays LNG has been beginning to take the place of petroleum as fuel all over the world and VLCC tankers of LNG will take the same sea routes that had been used by VLCC tankers of petroleum in the last pat of he 20th century. The transportation of LNG by a VLCC include more dangerous nature of sea peril than that of petroleum. We already know the dimensions of a disaster a LNG tanker could bring about in the case of the LNG tanker, Yuyo-Maru No. 10 in the Tokyo Bay of Japan in 1974. From the point of safety when we construct a LNG base or LNG pier in the base, the appropriate government authority and constructing company had better take sea pilots or some ships handling experts to participate in a prior consultation of the design of the project. A G/T 100,000 ton LNG base and pier were completed in November of 1996 in Inchon harbour in Korea and LNG VLCC tankers of G/T 100,000 ton class have been entering into the base ever since. This study was started and completed to comply with the requisition of the Sea Pilot Association of Inchon harbour in advance of the opening of the LNG base. As the entrance and exit channels leading to Inchon harbour were constructed in the years of 1930s, it was one of the most pressing works for Inchon sear pilots in 1996 to certify the method of safe passing maneuvering of a G/T 100,000 ton LNG tanker through the Pudo narrow channel prior to commercing actual piloting of the LNG VLCC tanker. The author made some mathematical models computing maneuvering of a vessel changing her course with her control surface through a narrow channel and computed maneuvering of a G/T 100,000 ton LNG tanker and also made maneuvering simulations of the vessel by a desk-top simulator. The results of computations and simulations are well coincided with each other in qualitative aspects to assure safe passing of the LNG VLCC.

A Study about the interactions of vessels running parallely in proximity to one another and safe conducting of them in restricted waterways (제한수역에서 근접 항해하는 선박의 상호작용과 안전항해거리에 관한 연구)

  • When a vessel passes near a channel boundary, the boundary creates forces and moments acting on the vessel. With the same reason passing of two vessels closely gives same effects to each other. The principal difference between the above two cases is that the channel boundary is long and constant shape compared to those of vessels. The interaction forces and moments between two vessels could be assumed to be functions of the longitudinal distance $chi_0$, transverse distance $y_0$ and speeds of the two vessels. Passage of one vessel close to another is important operationally from the viewpoint of replenishment at sea, avoidance of collisions and passage of two vessels in restricted channels. The authors studied the interactions between two vessels running closely and calculated safe conducting distances according to separated distances and speeds of the two vessels.

  • It is necessary to prepare a plan to accommodate the International Convention in domestic law, focusing on the new duties for the Coast Guard as they pertain to the field of ship recycling, by studying the key issue of the "HONG KONG International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships" of the International Maritime Organization(IMO) and through analyzing the current status of the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is directly responsible for the protection of the marine environment and takes charge of important duties; Therefore, by instituting a legal basis for its new duties, it will not only create new business but also be able to consolidate its role as an important constituent in the sphere of marine conservation and protection.

  • The issues of environmental pollution and labor safety on ship recycling in the undeveloped countries such as India, Bangladesh, etc have been proclaimed. For this, IMO has been actively participated in resolving such problems since 1998 and then finally the International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships is going to be adopted in this year. The convention provides the design, construction, operation and preparation of ships in order to facilitate safe and environmentally sound recycling as well as the safe and environmentally sound operation of ship recycling facilities. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to introduce the major contents of ship recycling convention and its time of entry into force and to analyse stakeholders' strategies toward it so that Korea will have a better position for the establishment of a mechanism regarding regulation stringency on environmentally sound ship recycling.

  • Recently, tugs and barges have become larger in size and increased in number. Also, most of tugs and barges are more than ten-years old. Total number of marine accident has been decreased, whereas that of accidental happening in tug-barge transportation has not been decreased. The statistics of marine accidents in 2010 shows that tug-barge accidents increased rapidly compared with those of 2009. The cause of accidental happening in tug-barge transportation is a quality of tug-barge operator the labour serious shortage of crew. This study is to give or suggest the various educational contents considering old age of crew and navigational environment for safe navigation in tug-barge transportation.

  • Because of increasement on the transportation of goods by ship and the operation of coastal ships for leisure, the interest of marine parts is growing up lately and then the safe navigation of ships are essential. In these circumstances, it is necessary that it should be examined the regulation of vessel traffic control in effect. Therefore, the wave height is analyzed on korean coast, and then the seakeeping performance with the wave height and the various hull types on operating on the coast is evaluated. These results will be helpful to the improvement of the regulation of vessel traffic control and safe navigation of coastal passenger ships.

  • Recently, the navigation risk is increasing significantly with growing of vessels' volume and propelling marine facilities, water bridges and port development etc. As a result, Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs enacted a new law called MSA(Maritime Safety Audit) as a comprehensive maritime traffic safety management scheme in order to ensure safety improvements from the early planning stage to post managing of the development which affect the maritime traffic environment. MSA as a tool for improving maritime traffic safety is a formal safety diagnosis assessment in the existing or future ship's fairway by an independent audit institute. It examines the potential hazards of maritime traffic safety about the port development, if necessary, and is to ensure the implementation of appropriate safety measures. The primary purpose of MSA is to identify potential risk elements affecting safe navigation. This paper is aimed to introduce the backgrounds, the necessity and efficiency of MSA and also to describe some technical standards and diagnostic procedures.

New Surgical Approach for Gastric Bezoar: "Hybrid Access Surgery" Combined Intragastric and Single Port Surgery

  • Regarding the removal of a gastric bezoar, laparoscopic surgery was performed and it was shown that the laparoscopic approach is safe and feasible. However, the laparoscopic method has the risk of intraabdominal contamination, when the gastric bezoar is retrieved from the gastric lumen in the peritoneal cavity. We developed and applied a new procedure for the removal of the gastric bezoar using one surgical glove and two wound retractors as a fashion of intragastric single port surgery. Herein we present this new minimal invasive procedure, so named "hybrid access surgery" which involves the use of existing devices and overcomes the weakness of laparoscopic removal of the gastric bezoar. Our new procedure, combining the concept of intragastric and single port access, is acceptable and feasible to retrieve the gastric bezoar. In the future, this procedure may be one of the alternative procedures for retrieving gastric bezoar even when it is incarcerated in the pylorus.

Analysis of Stem Wave due to Long Breakwaters at the Entrance Channel

  • Recently, a new port reserves deep water depth for safe navigation and mooring, following the trend of larger ship building. Larger port facilities include long and huge breakwaters, and mainly adopt vertical type considering low construction cost. A vertical breakwater creates stem waves combining inclined incident waves and reflected waves, and this causes maneuvering difficulty to the passing vessels, and erosion of shoreline with additional damages to berthing facilities. Thus, in this study, the researchers have investigated the response of stem waves at the vertical breakwater near the entrance channel and applied numerical models, which are commonly used for the analysis of wave response at the harbor design. The basic equation composing models here adopted both the linear parabolic approximation adding the nonlinear dispersion relationship and nonlinear parabolic approximation adding a linear dispersion relationship. To analyze the applicability of both models, the research compared the numerical results with the existing hydraulic model results. The gap of serial breakwaters and aligned angles caused more complicated stem wave generation and secondary stem wave was found through the breakwater gap. Those analyzed results should be applied to ship handling simulation studies at the approaching channels, along with the mooring test.
