This study compares marital satisfaction between male and female rural migrants and explores the effects of characteristics of rural migrants and family values on marital satisfaction. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The survey included 483 migrants living in rural communities of North Jeolla Province and South Jeolla Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, cross tables, the t-test, correlations, and a hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 21.0. According to the results, marital satisfaction was higher in men than in women. In addition, the effects of characteristics of rural migrants and family values on marital satisfaction were greater in men than in women. The major determinant of marital satisfaction in men was economical preparation, whereas that in women was family values. Economical preparation for rural living was more important for men, and the sufficient understanding and internalization of rural living was more important for women. In particular, family values represented the main variable between men and women in terms of marital satisfaction. These results suggest that family relationships may be the most important factor influencing rural migrants' marital satisfaction and that spousal relationships may be the core factor influencing family relationships.
This study was designed to understand family economic well-being in Korea and to compare it with that in the U.S.A. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of rural family life satisfaction in Korea and in the U.S.A. Specific objectives were: 1. To investigate the influence of independent variabels on rural family life satisfaction, 2. To analyze the influence of socioeconomic variables and social-psychological variables on rural family life satisfaction, and 3. To find commonalities and differences between the two countries. The data, collected from 471 Korean rural households and 301 households in two counties of Ilinois, a state in the U.S.A., were analyzed by frequency distribution, pearson's correlation, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffe test, and multiple regression analysis. The results are as follows: 1. The only common tendency is that the feeling of togetherness influences family life satisfaction in the two countries. 2. The social-psychological variables correlated with each other, and these variables considerably influence rural family life satisfaction in both countries. 3. Sex, number of family members, and no talk influence family life satisfaction differently in the two countries.
In this survey, we tried to find out number of participating and main purpose of that "Kye" meeting of all family members in rural community. Main purpose is follows; First, Differences by rural area, number of participating and main purpose of that "Kye" meeting of all family members in rural community. Second, Relationship between residence years by the head of a family and numbers in rural community. Third, Relationship between size of owned land(paddy field and uplaned) by the head of a family and number of participating and main purpose of that "Kye" meeting of all family members in rural community. Fourth, Relationship between size of cultivated land(paddy field and uplaned) by the head of a family and number of participating and main purpose of that "Kye" meeting of all family memebers in rural community. The main results are as follows; First, there are different points by the kind of rural area in number of participating and "Kye for friendly gathering", "Kye for saving", "Kye for sightseeing". Second, variable of residence years of the head of a family is only negative influential factor in "Kye for saving". Third, variable of size of owned land is positive influential factor in total number of participating "Kye", "Kye for friendly gathering", "Kye for saving" and "Kye for sightseeing". Fourth, variable of size fo cultivated land is positive influential factor in total number of participating "Kye", "Kye for mournig and marriage", "Kye for friendly gatiering", "Kye for saving" and "Kye for sightseeing". It seems that "Kye" meetings are still a preferred means by the jrural community to gather the cooperation among rural population. But the purpose of "Kye" meetings has changed from the family centered such as worship or marriage and mouring of family members to out of the family centered events such as friendly gathering, sightseeing.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether attachment to primary caregivers and family interaction affect rural children's social competence through self-regulation ability. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with 345 students aged 11-13 attending elementary schools in a rural area of Gyeongsang Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and path analysis using the AMOS 23.0 program. The main result was that rural children's self-regulation had an indirect effect on attachment with primary caregivers and family interaction through social competence. The findings of this study will contribute to designing a variety of programs that can promote the positive development of social competence among rural children.
The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of suicidal ideation of rural residents. This study was based on predictors of suicidal ideation of urban residents. The participants were adolescents, adults, and seniors sampled from 10 provinces all over the country, from May to Aug, 2010. The data for the study were analysed as decision tree analysis. The major results of the study were as follows. First, a main predictor of suicidal ideation for rural residents was high depression. Unlike rural residents, urban residents reporting high depression and influence of mass media showed high suicidal ideation. Second, interaction of depression and family solidarity was important predictor of suicide ideation both rural and urban residents, but a condition that effects the situation differed between rural and urban residents. Rural residents reporting high depression and high family solidarity showed high suicidal ideation, urban residents reporting low depression and high family solidarity showed low suicidal ideation. Stress was also operate differently. Rural residents reporting moderate depression, low family solidarity and high stress showed high suicidal ideation, but stress of urban resident was not a important predictors of suicidal ideation. And rural residents reporting low depression and low stress showed the lowest level of suicidal ideation, urban residents reporting low family solidarity and low depression showed the lowest level of suicidal ideation.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role types that affect the life satisfaction of the elderly in rural areas. The research subjects were 1,000 people aged 65 years and over living in the rural areas of Korea. The data were analyzed using frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and multiple regression analysis. The results of the study were as follows: First, as a result of substituting the role of rural elderly people into the role type of Rosow, the family role was drastically decreased, the health and self-management roles were increased and the social role was not changed much. In other words, the role type of the rural elderly supported the hypothesis proposed by Rosow. Second, life satisfaction was affected by monthly living expenses, social role, educational level, gender, farm, and religion. In order to improve the life satisfaction of the rural elderly, it is necessary to build programs and infrastructures that can play social roles in rural areas.

This article addresses potential barriers to sustained employment for rural low-income mothers. Drawing from a two panel longitudinal sample of 240 families from the Rural Families Speak project, it examines the extent to which human capital and family factors were related to these mothers' ability to be employed. Comparisons are made between mothers, who over a three-year period, were continuously unemployed, intermittently employed, or stably employed. Many of these rural low-income mothers faced multiple individual and family barriers that impacted their labor force participation. Notably food insecurity, mental health, caring for a young child, housing, and a family history of welfare were associated with less stable employment. The implications for public policy and service delivery are discussed.
The purpose of this study is to examine the healthy degree of the rural families and the variables that affect it, as well as the differences between husband and wife perceptions on the healthiness of rural families. One hundred and ninety six couples (three hundred and ninety two individuals) were surveyed for this study The following findings were obtained from the analysis of the data. First, the degree of the healthiness of rural families was quantified as about 71 points out of 100 possible maximum points. Second, family type ($\beta$=.17), the wife's self-esteem ($\beta$ =.22), the husband's self-esteem ($\beta$ =.17), wife's marital satisfaction ($\beta$ =.32), and husband's marital satisfaction ($\beta$=.15) were the only variables that significantly affected the healthiness of rural families. Third, social-psychological variables (for example, self-esteem and marital satisfaction of the couple) had more explanatory power than material and farming-related variables. From the results of this study, it is suggested that in order to enhance the healthiness of rural families, systematic educational programs that can improve social-psychological interactions among family members should be developed.
The purpose of this study, which focuses on safe living as an important determinant of the quality of life for the elderly, is to provide policy proposals for their safe living in rural areas by examining their current living conditions and related policies. To examine the related policies, we analyzed government plans including: the first, second and third Basic Plan on Low Fertility and Aging Society, first implemented in 2006, the first, second and third Basic Plan for Healthy Families, also first implemented in 2006, and the first, second and third Five-year Plan for Improvement of the Quality of Life of Rural People and Regional Development of Rural Areas, first implemented in 2005. In addition to these plans, government projects concerning safe living environments were assessed. we present the following policy proposals for the safe living of the elderly in rural areas. First, integrated, customized policies are required for the rural elderly's everyday life. That is, elderly-friendly residential improvement policies are needed since accidents involving the rural elderly usually occur in their own houses. Policies should also be introduced to monitor and improve the elderly's nutritional and health status. Also considering the high proportion of elderly people in rural areas, policies must be aimed at creating elderly-friendly and family-friendly villages. Second, educational sessions for the elderly are necessary to raise their awareness of safety in everyday lives, which they often overlook.
As the price of traditional fossil fuels continue to increase, more people attach importance to the pollution of the environment caused by fossil fuel's burning, developing and using renewable energy resources has become a very important project all over the world. Also, the rural energy planning which is another method to improve energy utilization ratio and reduce environment pollution, is also regarded as a very effective way to reduce the energy consumption. There is a quantity of renewable energy resources and natural tribes in rural area, which is both feasible to develop the renewable energy and the regional energy planning. To carry out this, it is needs to know the area's quantity of renewable energy resources and the total energy consumption. This paper is to find out the relationship between rural energy consumption and rural conditions, and to found a energy consumption model which can conjecture the energy consumption in rural family. and the cost of rural family's energy consumption was founded to conjecture how much money dose it cost in rural family's energy consumption. The energy consumption model was concluded using the surveys of 76 families in 14 villages at the area of Chungcheongbuk-Do(province). The main factors to energy consumption was selected out which were number of family members, acreage of house, acreage of farmland and family's annual income.
