  • The main objective of this paper is to study the application of runs to the analysis of hydrologic data. The stochastic structure of annual hydrologic data is investigated using the statistical properties of run-length for various truncation levels. Observed relative frequencies of run-length at each station are copared with the calculated and approched to the calculated. Also, it can be shown to estimate the durations of wet and dry years by the probabilities of run-length for a given truncation level. Annual precipitation data were obtained from the stations where have relatively long records, and stream flow data were generated by Markov model. The results of hypothesis test with run-lengths show independence of annual hydrologic series and Markov model can be applied to generate annual stream flow at Hyunpung, Waekwan and Gyuam.

  • The purpose of this paper is to classify the types of input characters, printed Hangul characters, using Maximum Run Length Projection(MRLP)that is used to extract features of input character.Because the number of Hangul characters is large and its structure is complex, there exists close similarities among characters. This paper, therefore, tried to increment the type classification rate using fuzzy resoning. The Maximum Run Length Projection is very immune to noise, and also useful to extracting the demanding information efficiently. In a test case with the most frequently use 917 printed Hangul characters,it achieved 98.58%correct classification rate.

  • In this paper, a novel method for data hiding into binary images is proposed. Binary image has two tones: black and white. For this reason, it is not easy to hide messages into binary images. PWLC (pair-wise logical computation) is a new method to hide message into binary images. However, it yields images of unacceptable quality and its decoding process is unclear. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, we adopt the run-length method to achieve advanced reversible data hiding. That is, we find a proper region to hide messages to reduce visual degradation. In this paper, we introduce an improved procedure to hide messages into binary images.

  • In fingerprint verification and identification, fingerprint and background region should be segmented. For this purpose, most systems obtain variance of brightness of X and Y direction using Sobel mask. To decide given local region is background or not, the variance is compared with a certain threshold. Although this method is simple, most fingerprint image does not separated with two region of fingerprint and background region. In this paper, we presented a new segmentation algorithm based on Run-Length Connectivity analysis. For a given binary image after thresholding, suggested algorithm calculates RL of X and Y direction. Until the given image is segmented to two regions, small run region is successively inverted. Experimental result show that this algorithm effectively separates fingerprint region and background region.

  • This study is finding the most appropriate model of kangwondo watershed. To synthesize each hydrograph, It is found to several parameters which are used in existing hydrographes. then the synthestic hydrograph is compared and investigated with many hydrographes of the rivers in kanwondo. These methods, Nakayasu, Clark, SCS are used to calculate the run-off of this watershed. When the calculated run-off is compared with real rating-curves, then it is found that the SCS method using the Clark's concentrantion time is the best way on this area having large watershed, long river length and gentle water slope, the Nakayasu method is more suitable on this area having small watershed, short river length and steep water slope. Also it is founded from analyzing run-off hydrographes, peak run-off and peak time that the Clark's method applied Kirpich's concentration time way is suitable in the area of kangwondo.

  • The maximum run-up heights of periodic waves are numerically investigated in this study. Incident waves are sinusoidal and enoidal waves. The maximum run-up height of enoidal wave approaches that of sinusoidal wave as the wave length decreases, while it approaches that of solitary wave as the wave length increases. If wave height is fixed, the maximum run up heights of enoidal waves are always greater than those of sinusoidal waves but smaller than those of solitary waves.

  • We propose a new RLL(run length limited) (2,7) PP(parity preserving) code with 4 RMTR(repeated minimum transition run) for optical recording. The proposed code has better characteristics in terms of density ratio, RMTR, DC(direct current) component suppression, BER(bit error rate) and system complexity than (2,1O) code that currently applied in storage systems and (1,7) PP code that highly recommended as the next generation optical recording system. Some characteristics of the code are described with several simulations. And the proposed code's superiorites in performance is illustrated as compared with the other codes.

  • This paper proposes a new method that detects the intersection points of handwritten Hangul strokes using run-length. The method firstly finds the strokes' width of handwritten Hangul characters using both horizontal and vertical run-lengths, secondly extracts horizontal and vertical strokes of a character utilizing the strokes' width, and finally detects the intersection points of the strokes exploiting horizontal and vertical strokes. The analysis of both the horizontal and the vertical strokes doesn't use the strokes' angles but both the strokes' width and the changes of the run-lengths. The intersection points of the strokes become the candidated parts for phoneme segmentation, which is one of main techniques for off-line handwritten Hangul recognition. The segmented strokes represent the feature for handwritten Hangul recognition.
