  • The research related to testing pupils' achievement in the field of Measurement and Measure in initial teaching of geometry points to an insufficient adoption of the basic components of the length measurement concept among pupils. In order to discover the cause, we looked at the basic components on which the procedure of measuring length using a ruler is based, highlighted the possibilities of introducing the procedure in measuring length, and determined pupils' achievement during the procedure of measuring length using a ruler. The research sample consisted of 145 pupils, out of which 72 were the 2nd grade pupils and 73 were the 4th grade pupils. A descriptive method was applied in the research. The technique we used was testing, and for the statistical data processing we used a χ2 test. The results of the research show that, when drawing a straight line of a given length using a ruler, there is no statistical difference in achievement between the 2nd and 4th grade pupils, nor in the pupils' knowledge regarding drawing a ruler independently, while drawing a straight line of a given length using a "broken" ruler 4th grade pupils are statistically better. The results of the research indicate that pupils' achievement is better in doing standard tasks than in non-standard ones, given that the latter require conceptual knowledge. The components of the concept of length measurement using ruler have not been sufficiently developed yet, and these include: zero-point, partitioning a measured object in a series of consecutive measurement units and their iteration. We shed more light on the critical stage in the procedure of length measurement - the transition from non-standard to standard units and the formation of the length measurement scale. For further research, we propose to look at the formation of the concept of length measurement using the ruler through all its components and their inclusion in the mathematics curriculum, as well as examining the correlation of pupils' achievement in the procedure of measuring length with their achievement in measuring area (and volume).

  • Objectives : Accurate location of acupoints is a prerequisite for both practice and research into acupoint specificity. Given that accurate location of acupoints is one of the most important issues in meridianology education, this study aimed at evaluating if the elastic ruler method for locating acupoints is suitable for meridianology practice class. Methods : Fifty-six students who took meridianology practice class participated in the experiment. Firstly, they were asked to locate PC6, CV12 and ST36 without any assisting tools and the distance between standard acupoint and their acupoint location was measured. Secondly, they were again asked to locate the same points this time with an elastic ruler. Then the first and second measurements were compared using a paired t-test. Results : Analysis of the results found using an elastic ruler significantly improved the difference between the student's acupoint location and the standard acupoint: there was a significant difference between 1st and 2nd measurements for PC6 (1.87${\pm}$0.29mm vs. 1.28${\pm}$0.19mm, P=0.037) and for ST36 (2.70${\pm}$0.22mm vs. 1.38${\pm}$0.15mm, P<0.0001). Conclusions : Using an elastic ruler as an assisting tool for locating acupoints in meridianology practice class should be considered for improving accuracy in acupoint location.

  • This paper proposes a image-based water level measurement method, which adapt to the ruler's surface condition. When the surface of a ruler is deteriorated by mud, drifts, or strong light reflection, the proposed method judges the pollution of ruler by comparing distance between two levels: the first one is the end position of horizontal edge region which keeps the pattern of ruler's marking, and the second one is the position where the sharpest drop occurs in the histogram which is construct using image density based on the axis of image height. If the ruler is polluted, the water level is a position of local valley of the section having a maximum difference between the local peak and valley around the second level. If the ruler is not polluted, the water level is detected as the position having horizontal edges more than 30% of histogram's maximum value around the first level. The detected water level is converted to the actual water level by using the mapping table which is construct based on the making of ruler in the image. The proposed method is compared to the ultrasonic based method to evaluate its accuracy and efficiency on the real situation.

  • Objectives : Accurate and reproducible location of an acupuncture point (AP) have been considered an essential component of meaningful acupuncture research as well as clinical practice. Several kinds of devices have been developed and widely used for the convenience of locating APs. However, the accuracy and convenience of these devices have not been systematically evaluated. The present study was performed to find out the most suitable tools for the location accuracy and location easiness of APs among the devices respectively. Methods : Twenty subjects attempted to locate APs, including PC5 and SP6 in the arm and leg, using four different AP positioning methods: one Conventional Ruler method and three alternative methods including Cunometer, Transparent AP meter, and Elastic Ruler method. The position marked on each AP was plotted onto a thin, flexible, and transparent plastic film, and the dispersion rate of the positions was determined and recorded. The elapsed time for locating each AP was measured. After that each subject was answered to a short questionnaire regarding the degree of convenience and confidence of use of each method for AP location. Results : All of three alternative methods took less time than Conventional Ruler method did. Among these alternative methods, the accuracy of Elastic Ruler method was markedly higher than others. The degree of convenience of the Cunometer and the confidence of Elastic Ruler method were the highest among these alternative methods. Conclusions : The present study indicates that the Elastic Ruler method was the most compatible for the conventional Ruler methods. However, there are many factors need to be reconsidered. Improved devices for locating AP are imperatively needed for clinical practice.

  • After the study of Fujishima Gaijiro(1930), although it is common to see that the Tang-ruler(唐尺) was used in the construction of the Silla Sacheonwangsa temple(679), the basis of the discrimination of the construction measure and the detection of the unit length is not actually sufficient since conventional research was done before the excavation. The study was based on archaeological results, which was secured through the excavation research(2006~2012) of the temple site in recent years, to determine the construction measure and try to detect the unit length. In the analysis of the measured value of the ruins, the numerical data were obtained through measurements on drawings of the ruins, the tendency of conversion measure's number appearing by dividing each unit length of the Goguryeo-ruler(高句麗尺) and Tang-ruler within a certain range was compared from the Wansu-je(完數制) viewpoint. The research results are summarized as follows : 1)As a result of the analysis of the distance between the site's center, the case that conversion Cheok's(尺) number is converged to the unit of Jang(丈) within the range of unit length expresses three times more in Tang-ruler, and it is confirmed that a simple multiple relationship based on the unit of Jang is established between conversion Cheok's number. 2)As a result of analysis of Bokan(梁間) of the each Corridor site and the measured value of the stonework ruins, it could be confirmed that appears overwhelmingly in the Tang-ruler when conversion Cheok's number becomes an integer within the range of unit length. The results of the analysis are judged to be a clear basis for viewing the Tang-ruler as the construction measure of the Sacheonwangsa temple. 3)The estimated unit lengths of the construction measure that were obtained from the analysis of the distance between the site'scenter, the foundation stone center distance of the building site and the measured value of the stonework ruins are slightly different. There is a limit to the verification of the construction error about this, however it is difficult to specify, it is mentioned 294.37mm which is obtained from the analysis of the distance between the site's center.

  • Purpose: The zygoma is a key element which composes the facial contour. Zygomatic fracture induces facial asymmetry. We use radiologic evaluation or inspections mainly for identification of symmetry after reduction depressed zygomatic fracture. But the disadvantages of such methods are time-consuming and complicated process. So we tried to develop a new testing method with a ruler and a level. Methods: In unilateral depressed zygomatic fracture patient, parallel to the patient's head to make sure lay horizontaly. Put the leg of a ruler on the malar eminence so that it is at the same distance from the facial midline. Then take the level of malar eminence as put the level above the ruler. This process was performed before and after the reduction. Results: We were able to fix with plate and screw after checking the results of reduction fast and easily. Good results were obtained at post-operative radiologic evaluation. Conclusion: We can easily get the ruler and level around life. This method is not only simple but also shorttime process compared with other method-radiologic evaluation or inspection. And the operator can explain the results to the patients easily and objectively. Authors obtained the good results with this new method, and would introduce it for another method of identifying the result of reduction in depressed zygomatic fractures.

  • The purposes of the study were to investigate whether the use of the Geometer's Sketchpad(GSP) is more effective than the use of traditional tools such as ruler and protractor to enhance eighth- grade students' understanding of quadrilaterals and geometric reasoning ability and to examine how the use of the software affects on the development of students' understanding and reasoning ability. According to the results of the posttest, there was a significant difference in student achievement between students using GSP and students using ruler and protractor. Students using GSP significantly outperformed students using ruler and protractor on the posttest. Student interview data showed that the use of the GSP was more effective in developing students' geometric reasoning ability. Students using GSP achieved higher degrees of acquisition for van Hiele level 2 and 3 than students using ruler and protractor. Dynamic visual representations and hands-on experiences provided in GSP learning environment helped students approach quadrilateral concepts more conceptually and realize their pre-existing conceptual errors and re-conceptualize their mathematical ideas.

  • In this paper, an Internet-based monitoring system is studied which analyzes visual image of drifted snow and measures the amount of snowing. The system is composed with reference ruler where LED's are attached, a camera, and PC with a controller. The length of the ruler is 1.5m and the interval of the LED's is 1cm. The controller synchronizes the on-off control of each LED with the image frame of the camera. When the snow is accumulated along the ruler, the corresponding LED is blocked and the lowest position of the lighted LED is estimated with this captured image of the camera. Because of week intensity of LED light and light rays of outdoors, it is hard to discriminate which LED is blocked due to snow. Image processing method is used to obtain proper resolution and good accuracy. This system ...
