  • A rule based system for foundation design of building structures is developed with CLIPS in this study. The types of foundation and the allowable bearing capacity of supporting soil inferred by the rule based system for selection of foundation type, called SOFTEX, are transferred to a structural design program for building foundation. The allowable bearing capacity is calculated with N values of Standard Penetration Test. The foundation types such as independent spread footing, wall footing, combined footing and mat foundation can be inferred by the foundation merge procedure developed in this study. This procedure is based on the analysis data from the super structure and the estimated bearing capacity. By using this integrated system, structural engineers with less experience in foundation design can design the foundation system for the given superstructure and the site condition with relative ease.

  • This paper presents a robust design procedure for minimizing warpage in plastic injection-molded products, where the Pick-the-Winner rule based on Taguchi's Orthogonal Array experiments and the Design Space Reduction Method are integrated for optimization. Two-step optimization approach is applied to reduce warpage in the part design stage and additionally to minimize the warpage in the process conditions design stage. Taguchi's S/N ratio is introduced as a design metric to evaluate robustness against process variations. The effectiveness of proposed optimization process is shown with an example of warpage minimization problem.

  • Dweller's safety is one of the most important factors for the evaluation of building performance. The process of conventional safety design which is normally performed by the codes and designer's experiences is not enough to check the whole possibilities of unexpected accidents in the built environment. It means that the dwellers might be always exposed by the dangerous situation which should have been removed in the architectural design process. In order to solve this problem, this study intends to introduce a rule-based performance evaluation technology based on BIM(Building Information Modeling). The proposed technology focuses on the real time evaluation of dweller's safety in the ordinary life in the designed building alternatives and uses a commercial BIM tool as a design and evaluation platform.

  • This paper describes the features of a transmission line and a wiring, and a design rule based on a demanded condition for a wiring. Like as the simulation of a circuit, by tracking the wiring path among parts that are disposed on PCB, we analyze the feature of the corresponding wiring using the design formula and rule. We implement a signal integrity simulator, which is capable of electrical and electronic simulation for the feature of a wiring signal and the corresponding signal, and the results are demonstrated.

  • We describe a formal approach to the construction of optimal classification rule for the two-group normal classification with equal population mean problem. Based on the utility function of Bernardo, we suggest a balanced design for the classification and construct the optimal rule under the balanced design condition. The rule is characterized by a constrained minimization of total risk of misclassification, the constraint of which is constructed by the process of equation between expected utilities of the two group conditional densities. The efficacy of the suggested rule is examined through numerical studies. This indicates that, in case little is known about the relative population sizes, dramatic gains in accuracy of classification result can be achieved.

  • Digital CAD models are one of the most important assets the manufacturer holds. The trend toward concurrent engineering and outsourcing in the distributed development and manufacturing environment has elevated the importance of high quality CAD model and its efficient exchange. But designers have spent a great deal of their time repairing CAD model errors. Most of those poor quality models may be due to designer errors caused by poor or incorrect CAD data generation practices. In this paper, we propose a rule-based approach for healing CAD model errors. The proposed approach focuses on the design history data representation from a commercial CAD model, and the procedural method for building knowledge base to heal CAD model. Through the use of rule-based approach, a CAD model healing system can be implemented, and experiments are carried out on automobile part models.

  • In this paper, a new architecture and comprehensive design methodology of genetically optimized Rule-based Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks(gRFPNN) are introduced and a series of numeric experiments are carried out. The architecture of the resulting gRFPNN results from asynergistic usage of the hybrid system generated by combining rule-based Fuzzy Neural Networks(FNN) with polynomial neural networks (PNN). FNN contributes to the formation of the premise part of the overall rule-based structure of the gRFPNN. The consequence part of the gRFPNN is designed using PNNs. At the premise part of the gRFPNN, FNN exploits fuzzy set based approach designed by using space partitioning in terms of individual variables and comes in two fuzzy inference forms: simplified and linear. As the consequence part of the gRFPNN, the development of the genetically optimized PNN dwells on two general optimization mechanism: the structural optimization is realized via GAs whereas in case of the parametric optimization we proceed with a standard least square method-based learning. To evaluate the performance of the gRFPNN, the models are experimented with the use of several representative numerical examples. A comparative analysis shows that the proposed gRFPNN are models with higher accuracy as well as more superb predictive capability than other intelligent models presented previously.

  • extensible Markup Language (XML) is a new markup language for data exchange on the Internet. In this paper, we propose a language extensible Rule Markup Language (XRML) which is an extension of XML. The implicit rules embedded in the Web pages should be identifiable, interchangeable with structured rule format, and finally accessible by various applications. It is possible to realize by using XRML. In this light, Web based Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) can be integrated with rule-based expert systems. To meet this end, we propose the six design criteria: Expressional Completeness, Relevance Linkability, Polymorphous Consistency, Applicative Universality, Knowledge Integrability and Interoperability. Furthermore, we propose three components such as RIML (Rule Identification Markup Language), RSML (Rule Structure Markup Language) and RTML (Rule Triggering Markup Language), and the Document Type Definition DTD). We have designed the XRML version 0.5 as illustrated above, and developed its prototype named Form/XRML which is an automated form processing for disbursement of the research fund in the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAISI). Since XRML allows both human and software agent to use the rules, there is huge application potential. We expect that XRML can contribute to the progress of Semantic Web platforms making knowledge management and e-commerce more intelligent. Since there are many emerging research groups and vendors who investigate this issue, it will not take long to see XRML commercial products. Matured XRML applications may change the way of designing information and knowledge systems in the near future.

  • Comtputer Aided Process Planning(CAPP) has been emerged as playing a key role in Computer Integrated Manufactunng(CIM) as the most critical link to integrate CAD and CAM. A modified variant CAPP system based on process planning rule base is developed in this paper. This CAPP system generates process plans automatically according to the GT code data provided as input. In order to execute process planning, various process planning rules are constructed in the form of decision tree and the inference engine that extracts the process plan based on the tree-structured rules are implemented.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the transformed fashion design based on the principles of visual design. Wucius Wong classified the kinds of transformation techniques as internal variation, external variation, extension, superimposition, transfiguration, dislocation, and distortion, which create and modify the shape. And the kinds of shape grammar for transformation are rule deletion, rule addition, and rule transformation, which are applied to interpretate for the change of wearing, the specialization & development of clothes, and the avant-garde styles in subculture groups. The formative meanings of the transformed fashion design are multi-transformation with complexity, formal beauty pretending confusion, and the basis for new trend.
