  • This paper's purpose is to improve determining of the critical response of curved bridge to multi-component seismic motion. There are several methods to combine responses by multi-component excitation response, 30%, 40% rules and square-root-of-sum (SRSS). These combination rules determine same value of critical response in straight bridges. However, each method has critical response value of different magnitude in curved bridges. Thus a study about critical response of curved bridges is required. This paper presents comparison critical responses value as each combination rule, 30%, 40% rules and SRSS on curved bridges with the different radiuses of curvature. This study was carried out by response spectrum analysis of OO IC steel box girder bridge using SAP2000. It is concluded as follows: 1) In curved bridges, 30% and 40% rules tend to underestimate the critical response relatively to SRSS. 2) When bridges have smaller radiuses than 100m, difference between SRSS and 30% or 40% rules let run errors up as radiuses of curvature decreased.

  • Desalination plant ships have been recently regarded as one of the probable solutions for drought seasons in many countries. Because desalination plants should be mounted on the desalination ships and special purpose storages such as salty waste water tanks are necessary, onboard and compartment arrangements would be distinguished from those of other conventional commercial ships. This paper introduces some basic design procedure including resistance/propulsion and seakeeping performances. The ship lines were improved step by step after modification of the ship lines and verification of resistance/propulsion performances using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). After finalization of the ship lines, the seakeeping performance was also evaluated to check motion behaviors and drive wave-induced loads such as the wave shear force and bending moment. It was proved that the predicted long-term vertical wave shear force and bending moment were significantly less than the rule-based ones, thus it is expected that the deliverables of this study will reduce the construction cost of desalination plant ships.

  • The effect of porosity on bending and free vibration behavior of simply supported functionally graded plate reposed on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation is investigated analytically in the present paper. The modified rule of mixture covering porosity phases is used to describe and approximate material properties of the FGM plates with porosity phases. The effect due to transverse shear is included by using a new refined shear deformation theory. The number of unknown functions involved in the present theory is only four as against five or more in case of other shear deformation theories. The Poisson ratio is held constant. Based on the sinusoidal shear deformation theory, the position of neutral surface is determined and the equation of motion for FG rectangular plates resting on elastic foundation based on neutral surface is obtained through the minimum total potential energy and Hamilton's principle. The convergence of the method is demonstrated and to validate the results, comparisons are made with the available solutions for both isotropic and functionally graded material (FGM). The effect of porosity volume fraction on Al/Al2O3 and Ti-6Al-4V/Aluminum oxide plates are presented in graphical forms. The roles played by the constituent volume fraction index, the foundation stiffness parameters and the geometry of the plate is also studied.

  • Given the yield shear of a single-story inelastic structure with simple eccentricity, the problem of strength distribution among the resisting elements is investigated, with respect to minimize its torsional response during a ground motion. Making the hypothesis that the peak accelerations, of both modes of vibration, are determined from the inelastic acceleration spectrum, and assuming further that a peak response quantity is obtained by an appropriate combination rule (square root of sum of squares-SRSS or complete quadratic combination-CQC), the first aim of this study is to present an interaction relationship between the yield shear and the maximum torque that may be developed in such systems. It is shown that this torque may be developed, with equal probability, in both directions (clockwise and anticlockwise), but as it is not concurrent with the yield shear, a rational design should be based on a combination of the yield shear with a fraction of the peak torque. The second aim is to examine the response of such model structures under characteristic ground motions. These models provide a rather small peak rotation and code provisions that are based on such principles (NBCC-1995, UBC-1994, EAK-2000, NZS-1992) are superiors to EC8 (1993) and to systems with a stiffness proportional strength distribution.

  • This paper presents a mooring design procedure for a floating offshore wind turbine. Offshore environmental data for Jeju are taken from KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration) and used for the environmental conditions in numerical analyses. A semi-submersible-type floating wind system with a 5-MW-class wind turbine studied by the DeepCwind Consortium is applied. Catenary mooring with a studless chain is chosen as the mooring system. Design deliverables such as the nominal sizes of chain and length of the mooring line are decided by considering the long-term prediction of the breaking strength of the mooring lines where a 100-year return period is used. The designed mooring system is verified using a fatigue calculation based on rain-flow cycle counting, an S-N curve, and a Miner's damage summation of rule. The mooring tension process is obtained from time-domain motion analyses using ANSYS/AQWA.

  • In this work, the buckling and vibrational behavior of the composite beam armed with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SW-CNT) resting on Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation are investigated. The CNT-RC beam is modeled by a novel integral first order shear deformation theory. The current theory contains three variables and uses the shear correction factors. The equivalent properties of the CNT-RC beam are computed using the mixture rule. The equations of motion are derived and resolved by Applying the Hamilton's principle and Navier solution on the current model. The accuracy of the current model is verified by comparison studies with others models found in the literature. Also, several parametric studies and their discussions are presented.

  • Studies are being conducted regarding falling recognition using sensors on smartphonesto recognize falling in human daily life. These studies use a number of sensors, mostly acceleration sensors, gyro sensors, motion sensors, etc. Falling recognition system processes the values of sensor data by using a falling recognition algorithm and classifies behavior based on thresholds. If the threshold is ambiguous, the accuracy will be reduced. To solve this problem, Deep learning was introduced in the behavioral recognition system. Deep learning is a kind of machine learning technique that computers process and categorize input data rather than processing it by man-made algorithms. Thus, in this paper, we propose a falling recognition application system using deep learning based on smartphones. The proposed system is powered by apps on smartphones. It also consists of three layers and uses DataBase as a Service (DBaaS) to handle big data and address data heterogeneity. The proposed system uses deep learning to recognize the user's behavior, it can expect higher accuracy compared to the system in the general rule base.

  • The objective of present paper is assessment of dynamic buckling behavior of an embedded sandwich microplates in thermal environment in which the layers are reinforced through functionally graded carbon nanotubes (FG-CNTs). Therefore, mixture rule is taken into consideration for obtaining effective material characteristics. In order to model this structure much more realistic, Kelvin-Voigt model is presumed and the sandwich structure is rested on visco-Pasternak medium. Exponential shear deformation theory (ESDT) in addition to Eringen's nonlocal theory are utilized to obtain motion equations. Further, differential cubature method (DCM) as well as Bolotin's procedure are used to solve governing equations and achieve dynamic instability region (DIR) related to sandwich structure. Different parameters focusing on volume percent of CNTs, dispersion kinds of CNTs, thermal environment, small scale effect and structural damping and their influences upon the dynamic behavior of sandwich structure are investigated. So as to indicate the accuracy of applied theories as well as methods, the results are collated with another paper. According to results, presence of CNTs and their dispersion kind can alter system's dynamic response as well.

  • The aim of this paper is to study the projective curvature tensor field of the Curvature tensor Rijkh on a recurrent non Riemannian space admitting recurrent affine motion, which is also decomposable in the form Rijkh=Xi Yjkh, where Xi and Yjkh are non-null vector and tensor respectively. In this paper we decompose Special Pseudo Projective Curvature Tensor Field. In the sequal of decomposition we established several properties of such decomposed tensor fields. We have considered the curvature tensor field Rijkh in a Finsler space equipped with non symmetric connection and we study the decomposition of such field. In a special Pseudo recurrent Finsler Space, if the arbitrary tensor field 𝜓ij is assumed to be a covariant constant then, in view of the decomposition rule, 𝜙kh behaves as a recurrent tensor field. In the last, we have considered the decomposition of curvature tensor fields in Kaehlerian recurrent spaces and have obtained several related theorems.

  • Epicondylitis, as a tendinopathy characterized by fibroblast and microvascular hyperplasia, is a common musculoskeletal problem especially related with repetitive hand and wrist motion. It has a prevalence of between 0.2% and 5% in general population depending on the amount of exposure to manual labor jobs. Although it is known that the pathological lesions lie in the flexor or extensor common tendons, there could be collateral ligament lesions and/or reactive synovitis accompanied, which may make a case unresponsive to the treatment aimed only at the tendinopathy. Epicondylitis is easy to diagnose with typical pain, tenderness, and positive provocation tests. However, many conditions can mimic epicondylitis that further imaging or electrodiagnostic studies should be undertaken to exclude other possible problems. Ultrasonography provides information about the existence and extent of tendinopathy with relatively high specificity. Magnetic resonance imaging is often required to rule out other problems and confirm the diagnosis of the cases intractable to long term treatment. Many options of treatment are available for epicondylitis while numerous conflicting evidences have been noted, debating one treatment method is better than the others. Since it was reported that over 80% of epicondylitis improved within a year no matter what was done as treatment, it is a challenge to make accurate diagnosis and combine effective therapeutic regimens for the 20% of intractable cases.
