This study aims to investigate the problem recognition and clue capture processes of the observation stage in a geological field trip using abductive inquiry. To this end, eight outdoor geological programs were developed in the order of diagnostic evaluation, outdoor geological fieldwork, and review. Six middle-school students participated in these programs The geological field trip was conducted twice, followed by data provision, observation, rule generation, hypothesis generation, and final hypothesis presentation. Outdoor geological fieldwork recordings and student activity sheets were collected and analyzed qualitatively. From these data, three aspects of student observations emerged during the geological fieldwork: The characteristics of each pattern were subdivided into the geological importance of the clues, attention, type of clues, observation characteristics (attention factor), clue utilization, and clue deletion. Here, by combining these results, we propose educational applications that correspond to each aspect.

This paper proposes an enhanced object tracking algorithm to compensate the lack of temporal information in existing particle swarm optimization based object trackers using the trajectory of the target object. The proposed scheme also enables the tracking and documentation of the location of an online updated set of distractions. Based on the trajectories information and the distraction set, a rule based approach with adaptive parameters is utilized for occlusion detection and determination of the target position. Compare to existing algorithms, the proposed approach provides more comprehensive use of available information and does not require manual adjustment of threshold values. Moreover, an effective weight adjustment function is proposed to alleviate the diversity loss and pre-mature convergence problem in particle swarm optimization. The proposed weight function ensures particles to search thoroughly in the frame before convergence to an optimum solution. In the existence of multiple objects with similar feature composition, this algorithm is tested to significantly reduce convergence to nearby distractions compared to the other existing swarm intelligence based object trackers.

As various stakeholders are involved in construction projects, disputes between the parties are more likely to occur, which is a very important issue for the participants in the projects. Claims in construction projects, however, are very complex and thus difficult to manage. In particular, as the cause of a claim in the preceding stage that has not been resolved in a timely manner has an effect on the cause of a claim in the following stage, it is difficult to find a point of compromise regarding a claim caused by the relationship between the causes that occur in the preceding and following stages. In this regard, this study sought to examine the rules for the generation of change order claims, which occur most frequently among the construction claims, and thus to select the key management targets through the analysis of the relationship between the causes of claims arising in the preceding and following stages for the efficient management of claims. It is expected that the use of rules for the generation of change order claims as well as of representative and similar cases will help the construction practitioners in judging claims, considering the relationships among the causes of the claims. Meanwhile, in this study, association analysis was conducted regarding the causes of the occurrence of change order claims in a design-build delivery method, and therefore, it is necessary to verify the effectiveness of the method when applied to other delivery methods.

Extraction of knowledge, especially in the form of rules, from raw data is very important in data mining, the aim of which is to help users who feel the lack of knowledge in spite of the abundance of data. Logic minimization tools are ones which derive optimized knowledge given ON set and DC set. First, the parallel expansion scheme of logic minimization is extracted and used to obtain intial knowledge to get final rules, which are successfully applicable to real world data. The prototype system based on this new approach has been experimented with real world data to show that it is as practical as conventional long studied decision tree methods like C4.5 system.
The equality relation is very important in mechanical theorem proving procedures. A proposed inference rule called RHU-resolution is intended to extend the hyperparamodulation[23, 9] by introducing a bidirectional proof search that simultaneously employs a forward reasoning and a backward reasoning, and generalize it by incorporating beneflts of extended hyper steps with a preprocessing process, that includes a subsumption check in an equality graph and a high level planning. The forward reasoning in RHU-resolution may replace the role of the function substitution link.[9] That is, RHU-deduction without the function substitution link gets a proof. In order to control explosive generation of positive equalities by the forward reasoning, we haue put some restrictions on input clauses and k-pd links, and also have included a control strategy for a positive-positive linkage, like the set-of-support concept, A linking path between two end terms can be found by simple checking of linked unifiability using the concept of a linked unification. We tried to prevent redundant resolvents from generating by preprocessing using a subsumption check in the subsumption based eauality graph(SPD-Graph)so that the search space for possible RHU-resolution may be reduced.
The Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) is the de facto standard ontology to describe human phenotypes in detail, and it is actively used, particularly in the field of rare disease diagnoses. For clinicians who are not fluent in English, the HPO has been translated into many languages, and there have been four initiatives to develop Japanese translations. At the Biomedical Linked Annotation Hackathon 6 (BLAH6), a rule-based approach was attempted to determine the preferable Japanese translation for each HPO term among the candidates developed by the four approaches. The relationship between the HPO and Mammalian Phenotype translations was also investigated, with the eventual goal of harmonizing the two translations to facilitate phenotype-based comparisons of species in Japanese through cross-species phenotype matching. In order to deal with the increase in the number of HPO terms and the need for manual curation, it would be useful to have a dictionary containing word-by-word correspondences and fixed translation phrases for English word order. These considerations seem applicable to HPO localization into other languages.

A plane-strain finite element analysis of sheet metal forming is carried out by using the rigid-plastic FEM based on the membrane theory. The sheet material is assumed to possess normal anisotropy and to obey Hill's new yield criterion and its associated flow rule. A formulation of initial guess generation for the displacement field is derived by using the nonlinear elastic FEM. A method of contact treatment is proposed in which the skew boundary condition for arbitrarily shaped tools is successively used during iteration. In order to verify the validity of the developed method, plane-strain drawing with tools in analytic expression and with arbitrarily shaped tools is analyzed and compared with the published results. The comparison shows that the present method can be effectively used in the analysis of plane-strain sheet metal forming and thus provides the basis of approximate sectional analysis of panel-like sheet forming.
In order to investigate the function and feature of western men's underclothes in the second half of the 19C, in this study, the historical changes of western men's underclothes are compared the first half of the 19C with the second half of the 19C. In the second half of the 19C, the useful function to ease for body was important. In the 1860's, for day-shirt, the tucked panels was disappeared and the front was pain. But the evening dress-shirt continued to show an expansive front tucked. Coloured shirts was used for country and sporting occasions. Ready-made underwear was used. In the 1870's, the plain breast was introduced and the Gladstone collar was used. Paper collars and dickeys were unfashionable. The drawers was composed a gusset at the back of the waistband. The dress of one generation was became the livery of the next. In the 1880's, a new feature was one stud and the use of pique for the breast. Coloured shirt was composed of stripes across the breast. In the 1890's, height of the collar steadily increased. The coat-shirt and regatta shirt became popular. The nice choice of shirt, collar and tie was a matter of supreme importance .The social status of the white shirt was further threatened by fancy coloured shirts. The mode of relaxation affected sports shirts. By the close of this period, both sexes accepted the hygienic rule of wool next the skin.

This study introduces a condition diagnosis technique for a turbine governor system. The governor system is an important control system to handle turbine speed in a nuclear power plant. The turbine governor system includes turbine valves and stop valves which have their own functions in the system. Because a turbine governor system is operated by high oil pressure, it is very difficult to maintain under stable operating conditions. Turbine valves supply oil pressure to the governor system for proper operation. Using the pressure variation of turbine and governor valves, operating conditions of the turbine governor control system are detected and identified. To achieve automatic detection of valve status, time-based and frequency-based analysis is employed. In this study, a new approach, wavelet decomposition, was used to extract specific features from the pressure signals of the governor and stop valves. The extracted features, which represent the operating conditions of the turbine governor system, include important information to control and diagnose the valves. After extracting the specific features, decision rules were used to classify the valve conditions. The rules were generated by a decision tree algorithm (a typical simple method for data-based rule generation). The results given by the wavelet-based analysis were compared to detection results using time- and frequency-based approaches. Compared with the several related studies, the wavelet transform-based analysis, the proposed in this study has the advantage of easier application without auxiliary features.
Identifying the speakers of individual utterances mentioned in textual stories is an important step towards developing applications that involve the use of unique characteristics of speakers in stories, such as robot storytelling and story-to-scene generation. Despite the usefulness, it is a challenging task because not only human entities but also animals and even inanimate objects can become speakers especially in fairytales so that the number of candidates is much more than that in other types of text. In addition, since the action of speaking is not always mentioned explicitly, it is necessary to infer the speaker from the implicitly mentioned speaking behaviors such as appearances or emotional expressions. In this paper, we investigate a method to exploit linguistic clues to identify the speakers of utterances from textual fairytale stories in Korean, especially in order to handle such challenging issues. Compared with the previous work, the present work takes into account additional linguistic features such as vocative roles and pairs of conversation participants, and proposes the use of discourse-level turn-taking behaviors between speakers to further reduce the number of possible candidate speakers. We describe a simple rule-based method to choose a speaker from candidates based on such linguistic features and turn-taking behaviors.
