  • The control of high pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed blending polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface was studied. High LC pretilt angle on the rubbing blending polyimide of homeotropic PI and SE-7492 surface was measured and the LC pretilt angle increased wish blending ratio and rubbing strength. However, the low LC pretilt angle on the rubbed blending polyimide of homeotropic PI and SE-150 surface was measured. The high pretilt angle of NLC can be achieved by using the blending PI surface.

  • We have investigated the relationship between the polar anchoring energy and the surface order parameter in nematic liquid crystal (NLC), 4-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), on the two kinds of the weakly rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces. The observed polar anchoring energy of 5CB is approximately 2${\times}10^{-4}(J/m^2$) and then increases with increasing the rubbing strength (RS) on weakly rubbed surface (RS=57mm) with side chain at $30^{\circ}C$; same results are obtained on weakly rubbed PI surface without side chain. The surface order parameter of 5CB on rubbed PI surfaces increases with increasing the RS at a weak rubbing region. The surface order parameter of 5CB is strongly related to the characteristics of PI material. Consequently, we suggest that the polar anchoring energy of NLC is strongly attributed to the surface order parameter on rubbed PI surfaces.

  • Ultra-small optical anisotropy of a rubbed polyimide (PI) alignment layer is quantitatively characterized using the improved reflection ellipsometer. Twisted nematic (TN) cells are fabricated using the rubbed PIs of known surface anisotropy as alignment layers. Distribution of liquid crystal (LC) molecules in the TN cell is characterized using transmission ellipsometry. The retardation of the rubbed PI surface increases as rubbing strength increases. The tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface decreases as rubbing strength especially as the angular speed of the rubbing roller increases. Pretilt angle of LC molecules in the TN cell shows strong correlation with tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface. Both the apparent order parameter and the effective twist angle of the LC molecules in the TN cell decrease as the pretilt angle of LC molecules increases.

  • Purpose: This research was implemented for men in their thirties who have lower back pain to observe general activity disorder patterns during pinch lift and rubbing manual therapy (PMT) and stretching application. Methods: Participants were divided into three groups: The PMT Group used applied pinch lift and rubbing manual therapy; the STR Group used applied stretching; and the CON Group was the control group. Participants for each group received treatments that were conducted three times a week for a total five weeks. Measures of pain utilized Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) [INCOMPLETE SENTENCE]. Results: There were significant differences between the PMT Group and the CON Group as well as the STR Group and the CON Group for pain, muscle strength and flexibility. There was a significant difference in pain between the PMT Group and the STR Group. Conclusion: As a result, it is inferred that PMT and stretching positively influenced recovery with regards to pain, muscle strength and flexibility relief; however PMT is more effective for pain relief than stretching.

  • In this paper, the response surface modeling of the control of the pretilt angle in the nematic liquid crystal on the homogeneous polyimide surface with different surface treatment is investigated. The pretilt angle is one of the main factors to determine the alignment of the liquid crystal display. The pretilt angle is measured to analyze the variation of the characteristics on the various process conditions. The rubbing strength and the hard baking temperature are considered as input factors. After the design of experiments is performed, the process model is then explored using the response surface methodology. The analysis of variance is used to analyze the statistical significance and the effect plots are also investigated to examine the relationship between the process parameters and the response.

  • In this study, improving the wash and rubbing fastness of a natural coloring matter from Madder extract dyed on Tencel nonwoven. The cationic finishing agent(RBP), nonionic finishing agent(HPX) and mordant(PAW) were used to improving the color fastness. The two types(exhaustion and pad-dry-cure) finishing process were investigated with various finishing agent concentration. The color strength, wash and rubbing fastness of Tencel nonwoven dyed with Madder extract have been evaluated by various dye concentration and finishing agent. The exhaustion process treated with the cationic finishing agent(RBP) was effective to improving washing and rubbing fastness.

  • The previous study reported that the quaternary copolymer of MMA, BA, MAA, and NEA was expected to be a good monomer composition for a binder polymer with good rubbing fastness for digital textile printing(DTP) pigment ink. However, the rubbing fastness of the dyed fabric with the quaternary copolymer binder containing pigment ink is not enough to be commercially used. Therefore, this study aims to optimize MMA:BA:MAA:NEA composition for improved rubbing fastness. And the binder polymer with various MMA:BA:MAA:NEA compositions were synthesized using miniemulsion polymerization. The particle size, viscosity, molecular weight, and Tg of the synthesized binder were evaluated. And the color strength and rubbing fastness of the black pigment ink dyed cotton fabrics with the prepared binders were also evaluated. Then, the stiffness of undyed and dyed cotton fabrics were evaluated to investigate the changes in touch as the binder structure changes.

  • Liquid crystal alignments on a rubbed polyimide layer were investigated by using optical transmission method. Using this technique, we also studied the pretilt angle of the polymer molecules near the surface of a side-chain polymer layer as a function of the rubbing strength. In particular, we obtained the optical characteristics of liquid crystal orientations and pretilt angles for LC cell photo-aligned by UV as well after rubbing alignment. High pretilt angle of 3.84 degree was obtained on the weekly rubbed polymide layer duribg UV irradation time of 60min.

  • The polar anchoring strength and surface ordering in a NLC,4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface containing trifluoromethyl moiety were studied. The large extrapolation length de of 5CB for washing process of water was measured at RS=114 mm. The polar anchoring energy of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface is decreased by the washing process. Also, the polar anchoring energy of 5CB increases with the rubbing strength on the PI surface. The surface ordering of 5CB for all washing processes is smaller than the non-washing process; it is attributed to the washing process.
