Study on the Functionalization of Waste EPDM and PP Blend

  • Recycling of ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) scrap was tried by blending with polypropylene (PP). EPDM scrap powder was prepared by shear pulverization process at high temperature, which may lead to selective chain scission induced by difference in the critical elastic coefficient. On the other hand, EPDM scrap powder was prepared by adding a selected reclaiming agent during shear pulverization process at high temperature. Terpene as a bonding agent was then introduced to improve adhesion property. PP, used as a matrix for manufacturing thermoplastic elastomer, was modified by the incorporation of dicumyl peroxide and maleic anhydride. The functionalized EPDM and modified PP were blended and cured dynamically at $190^{\circ}C$. The blend materials prepared in this study showed the comparable results to those of conventional TPE in terms of tensile and flow properties. Also, the odor component of recycled EPDM was analyzed using GC-MS.

A Study on Improving the Surface Roughness of Stereolithography Parts (광조형물의 표면조도 향상에 관한 연구)

  • SL(Stereolithography) part is made by piling up thin layers which causes the stair stepping effect at the surface of SL parts. The effect brings about excessive surface roughness and cuts down the merits of using SL part. Hence, additional post-machining finishing such as traditional grinding is required. But the traditional post-machining is detrimental to part geometry and time consuming. In this study, therefore, a paraffin coating and grinding post-machining is newly proposed to improve the surface quality of SL fart. The paraffin which has suitable properties for the proposed post-machining is coated all over the part surface. By grinding the only over-coated paraffin based on boundary of the SL part surface, the surface roughness can be improved without any damage on the part. Also, it is verified that SL part finished by the proposed post-machining process can be applied for rapid tooling as pattern through manufacturing silicon rubber molding and casting test.

  • It's necessary to analyze the mechanical behaviors of automotive air-conditioner hose, which have to play a proper role under severe operating conditions, in order to prepare a preventive measure for contrary effects expected in unfavorable circumstances. In this paper, the stress and deformation characteristics of the hose components such as rubber, sleeve, pipe and reinforces braids during the swaging process, are analyzed using the finite element method.

Site Selection using Port and Industry Clusters (제조산업의 항만클러스터 입지선정 모형에 관한 연구 - 수도권을 중심으로 -)

  • This paper aims to clarify if clustering effects among industries exist and if port-industry clustering effects exist. A knock-down approach was used in a survey and 16 industries were categorized. We defined which industry is more competitive in industry clusters and port-industry clusters. Another survey to experts was carried out to identify which industry is more appropriate to one of the three ports in Sudokwon (Seoul Metropolitan Areas): Incheon port, Pyungtaik port and Dangjin port. Five manufacturing industries are selected considering port-industry clustering relationships in this area and Analytic Hierarch Process was used for a pairwise comparison. Locational, social and economic factors are selected for 1st level. A result shows that Incheon port is more competitive in petroleum manufacturing, primary metal manufacturing and rubber and plastic manufacturing and Pyeontaik port is more competitive in metal assembly manufacturing and automobile and trailer manufacturing. However, sensitivity analysis shows a turnover of ranking in some industries. As there exist slight differences among three ports, cooperation is necessary when the government and Port Authorities make plans.

  • Thermosetting elastomer such as EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Dien Rubber) has been applied to the sponge weatherstrip of a vehicle as a main material. However, the thermosetting elastomers have limited recycling and have brought about the environmental problems. Furthermore, many steps of the manufacturing process such as formulation, mastication and vulcanization make difficult to control uniformity of the endproducts. These problems of current EPDM weatherstrip necessitated development of a new recyclable material, Thermoplastic Vulcanizates (TPV). In this study the influence of the water contents, and the processing conditions. On the foam density and structure in water blowing process was carried out. We found that TPV also can be foamed with water, maintaining the uniformity form this study. Therefore, many inevitable problems of EPDM weatherstrip can be solved, and this new technique is expected to take a roll of making a breakthrough in the rubber industry.

  • The curing process is the final step in tire manufacturing whereby a green tire built from layers of rubber compounds is formed to the desired shape and the compounds are converted to a strong, elastic materials to meet tire performance needs under elevated pressure and temperature in a press. A numerical optimization procedure was developed to improve product quality in a tire curing process. First, a dynamic constrained optimization problem was formulated to determine the optimal condition of the supplied cure media during a curing process. The objective function is subject to an equality constraint representing the process model that describes the heat transfer and cures kinetic phenomena in a cure press and is subject to inequality constraints representing temperature limits imposed on cure media. Then, the optimization problem was solved to determine optimal condition of the supplied cure media for a tire using the complex algorithm along with a finite element model solver.

  • Results of an experimental study on the manufacture, the mechanical properties and watertightness of pitch - based carbon fiber reinforced fly ash. cement composites are presented in this paper. The carbon fiber reinforced fly ash. cement composites using early strength cement silica powder and a small amount of stylene butadiene rubber latex are prepared with carbon fiber, foaming agents and mixing conditions. As a result, the mechanical and physical properties such as compressive , tensile and flexural strengths, watertightness and drying shrinkage of lightweight carbon fiber reinforced fly ash cement composites are Improved by using a samll amount of stylene butadiene rubber latex. Also, the manufacturing pnx:ess technology of carbon fiber reinforced fly ash . cement composItes is developed. The development and applications of precast products of lightweight carbon fiber remforced cement composites are expected in the near future.

Analysis on Urinary N-methylformamide of Korean Workers according to Industrial Classification and Countermeasures for Exposure Control of N,N-dimethylformamide (우리나라 근로자들의 업종별 뇨중 N-methylformamide 분석 및 N,N-dimethylformamide 노출관리 대책)

  • Objectives: This study is aimed to describe the current situation about urinary biomarker N-methylformamide(NMF) for workers exposed to N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF) according to industrial classification. Materials: Special health examination records of the workers who had undergone urinary biological monitoring in 2013 were collected. The numbers and percentage of workers, whose urinary NMF values were above the limit of detection(LOD) and above the biological exposure index(BEI) were calculated. Health relatedness with DMF as judged by their doctors was also described. All description was classified according to the $9^{th}$ Korean Standard Industrial Classification(KSIC). Results: It appeared that most workers exposed to DMF belong to manufacturing section(80.7%). The geometric mean(GM) values of urinary NMF were 6.25 mg/L, 3.54, and 3.86 for the manufacturing section, professional, scientific and technical activities section, and for the construction section respectively. In detail, it seemed that division of textiles(except apparel) (GM 7.51 mg/L), division of leather, luggage and footwear(11.59 mg/L), and division of rubber and plastic products(6.89 mg/L) were highly exposed to DMF with a high percentage of workers with urinary NMF values above BEI. This was probably due to the effect of skin absorption that the division of leather, luggage and footwear showed the highest urine NMF GM. Conclusions: It seemed that workers in manufacture industries such as textile, leather, luggage, footwear, rubber and plastic products were highly exposed to DMF. So, efforts should be focused on those industries in order to effectively diminish worker's exposure. Further studies to compare DMF air-monitoring with bio-monitoring according to industrial classification should be considered.

A study on the location of manufacturing industry and the Works' Residence in Metropolitan suburbs : A case of Yangsan (대도시 교외지역 제조업 입지와 종사자의 거주지 - 양산시 사례 -)

  • This study analyzed the location of manufacturing industries and works' residence in Yangsan city of which large part of industries were relocated from Busan metropolitan area along the industrial suburbanization process. Through the field survey, in-depth interview, and analysis of statistical data, the study tried to describe the relocation characteristics of manufacturing industries in Yangsan city. The results of the analysis are as follows: 1. The relocation rate of manufacturing industries from Busan to Yangsan was very high in 1980s. As a result of analysis, the first prime factor on relocation was the site problem for industrial land use. But for the newly starting industries, the most important factor was the subcontract networks among industries which differed from relocated ones. 2. The industrial suburbanization process influenced on the industrial structure strongly, as the compositional weight of rubber and plastic industries in Yangsan became greater and the size of the major plants got larger. 3. The manufacturing industries in Yangsan city were widely distributed on the main national industrial districts. Also, they were diffused out to the other places beyond the boundary of industrial districts. 4. The commuting workers' residence in Busan, employed by the plants of Yangsan marked 44.5%. That confirmed the strong influence of Busan labor market.

Shiftwork and Sickness Absence in Korean Manufacturing Industries (우리나라 제조업체의 교대작업실태와 교대작업여부에 따른 상병결근 및 이직에 관한 연구)

  • In order to provide necessary information for better health of workers through understanding the actual status of the industries adopting shift systems. The data were gathered from a stratified random sample of 347 (0.5%) firms selected out of about 70,000 manufacturing industries throughout the nation in 1993. Stratification during sampling was by industrial group and number of workers. The major findings obtained from 288 firms surveyed completely were as follows : 1. About 20.2% of the 288 firms were adopting shift systems and shirtworkers accounted for about 25.1% of the total work force in 288 firms. 2. The bigger number of workers was, the higher the adopting rate of shift system was. 3. The rate of having welfare facilities such as dining room, commuting bus, washing facilities, and health care room etc. was higher in the industries adopting shift systems. 4. The major industrial groups adopting shift systems were the rubber a: plastic goods manufacturing industry (54.1 per 100 firms) and the textile manufacturing industry (44.8 per 100 firms). However, the proportion of shiftworkers was higher in the textile manufacturing industry (70.5 per 100 firms) and the electronics industry (57.9 per 100 frms). 5. The most predominant work schedule was the weekly rotating, semi-continuos 2-crew 2-shift system (47.5%). 6. In the industries adopting shift systems, shiftworkers had an adjusted average of 0.29 spells per 100 workers ($0.14{\sim}0.45$ in 95% C.I.) compared to 0.23 spells per 100 nonshift dayworkers ($0.15{\sim}0.31$ in 95% C.I.) for 1 month. 7. Also, in the industries adopting shift systems, the adjusted average annuel turn-over rate of shiftworkers was 13.07 per 100 workers ($12.03{\sim}14.12$ in 95% C.I.) compared to 10.18 per 100 nonshift dayworkers ($9.53{\sim}10.82$ in 95% C.I.).
