The present study aims to optimize the performance of the Two-Stage Gas Gun by using the experimentally obtained data. RSM(Response Surface Method) was adopted in the optimization process to find the operating parameter than can maximize the projectile speed with the minimum number of tests. To decide the test points which results can consist of the response surface, 3$^{k}$ full factorial method was used, and the design variables were chosen with piston mass and 2$^{nd}$ driver fill pressure. The response surface was composed by nine test results and consequently the optimization was done with GENOCOP III, inherently GA code, in order to seek the optimal test point. The optimal test condition from the response surface was verified by the experiment. Results showed that the optimization process with response surface can successfully predict the test results fairly well. This study shows the possibility of performance optimization for the experimental facilities using numerical optimization algorithm.
Design optimization of a transonic compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) using response surface method and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis has been carried out in this work. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was used in the flow analysis. Three design variables were selected to optimize the stacking line of the blade. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, adiabatic efficiency was successfully improved. Ana, it is found that the design process provides reliable design of a turbomachinery blade with reasonable computing time.
Weight minimization of double-deck train carbody is imperative to reduce cost and extend life-time of train. It is required to decide 36 thickness of aluminum extruded panels. However, the design variables are two many to tract. moreover, one execution of structural analysis of double-deck carbody is time-consuming. Therefore, we adopt approximation technique to save computational cost of optimization process. Response surface model is used to apporximate static response of double-deck carbody. To obtain plausible response surface model, orthogonal array is empolyed as design of experiment(DOE). Design improvement by approximate model-based optimization is described. Accuracy and efficiency of optimization by using response surface model are discussed.

Recently the sub-micron structured substrates of 0.74 ${mu}ell$ track pitch and 800 $\AA$groove depth are required for DVD-RAM and the track pitch is expected to be narrower as the need for the information storage density is getting higher. For the accurate replication of the land-groove structure in the stamper to the plastic substrates it is important to control the injection -compression molding process such that the integrity of the replication for the land-groove structure is maximized. in the present study polycarbonate substrates were fabricated by injection comression molding and the land-groove structure regarded as one of mold temperature and the compression pressure on the integrity of the replication were examined experimentally. An efficient design methodology using the response surface method (RSM) the central composite design(CCD) technique and the analysis-of-variance (ANOVA) was developed to obtain the optimum processing conditions which maximize the integrity of the replication with a limited number of experiments.

A functionally graded material (FGM) spacer, which the distribution of dielectric permittivity inside an insulator changes spatially, can considerably reduce the electric field concentration around a high-voltage electrode and along the gas-insulator interface when compared to a conventional spacer with a uniform permittivity distribution. In this research, we propose the FGM spacer with an elliptical permittivity distribution instead of that with a distribution of dielectric permittivity varying along a radial direction only in order to improve efficiently the insulation capability. The optimal design of the elliptical FGM spacer configuration is performed by using the response surface methodology (RSM) combined with the steepest descent method (SDM).
In this paper, we investigate the optimization design for a spoke type motor with the characteristics of high torque density and high-efficiency. This motor has a high output per unit volume. In order to reduce noise and vibration caused by a high cogging torque, optimization design of the rotor and stator have been conducted using both Response surface method (RSM) and Finite elements method (FEM). In this paper, we show the potential for this motor to efficiently replace existing interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) in a wide range of industries.

In order to get the drive reliability and low Power-consumption characteristics, most of small form factor HDD has und the load/unload mechanism instead of CSS type. Compared with CSS mechanism, the load/unload system has little opportunity of head/media contact during the disk spin-up and down. However, the load/unload mechanism needs the precise integration technology with slider, suspension, ramp and load/unload velocity, and all of these component s should be designed simultaneously, not an individually. In this paper, we focus the design of the suspension stiffness using the specified ABS design. We use the CML software to calculate the load/unload dynamic and use the RSM(Response surface method) to get the optimal condition of the suspension stiffness.

Recent issue of optical actuator is applying to mobile device. It leads actuator to become smaller than conventional type. This paper proposes the design of micro actuator plate spring and analysis of its vibration characteristic. Considering natural frequency of spindle motor, 1st and 2nd eigenfrequency of micro actuator must avoid its natural frequency. First, magnetic circuit is designed by using fine pattern coil and magnetic force is acquired by simulation program. Then, concept design is achieved by topology optimization. From concept design, micro actuator plate spring is embodied through DOE(design of experiment). Finally, considering vibration characteristic simultaneously, optimal plate spring design is determined by RSM(response surface method).
This paper presents the shape optimization to minimize the BEMF(Back Electro-Motive Force) harmonics of PM type synchronous generators. RSM(Response Surface Methodology) is used to find the optimal solution. We used the 2D-Finite Element Method to obtain the observed data of the BEMF and SQP(Sequential Quadratic Problem method) is used to solve the constrained nonlinear optimization problem.
The optimization of a blade sweep for a transonic axial compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) has been performed using a response surface method and a Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes (RANS) flow simulation. Two shape variables of the rotor blade, which are used to define a blade sweep, are introduced to increase an adiabatic efficiency. Data points for response evaluations have been selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method has been used for an optimization on a response surface. The result shows that the adiabatic efficiency is increased to about 1 percent compared to that of the reference shape of the rotor blade. Relatively high increasement of the adiabatic efficiency is obtained between 20 and 60 percent span. In the present study, backward swept blade is more effective to increase the adiabatic efficiency In the axial compressor rotor.
