This paper presents the robust design of gripper part for a high-speed LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) transfer system. In this paper, the $1^{st}$ DOE(Design of Experiment) is conducted to find out main-effect factors for the design of gripper part. Thirty-six analysis are performed using $ANSYS^{(R)}$ and their results are statistically analyzed using $MINITAB^{(R)}$, which shows that the factors, i.e., First-width, Second-width, Rec-width, and thickness of gripper part, are more important than other factors. The main effect plots shows that the maximum deflection and mass of gripper part are minimized by increasing First-width, Second-width, Rec-width and thickness. The $2^{nd}$ DOE is conducted to obtain RSM(Response Surface Method) equation. The CCD(Central Composite Design) technique with four factors is used. Optimum design is conducted using the RSM equation. Genetic algorithm is used for optimal design. Six sigma robust design is conducted to find out a guideline for control range of design parameter. To obtain six sigma level quality, the standard deviations of design parameters are shown to be controlled within 5% of average design value.
Extraction of oil from Moringa oleifera seed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was investigated. Effects of three factors namely: sample mass, particle size and extraction time on the response, Moringa oleifera a volume extracted, were determined. The Box-Behnken design of RSM was employed which resulted in 15 experimental runs. Extraction was carried out in a 250 ml Soxhlet extractor with Hexane and Ethanol as solvent. The Moringa oleifera seed powder was packed inside a muslin cloth placed in a thimble of the Soxhlet extractor. The extraction was carried out at 60℃ using thermostatic heating mantle. The solvent in the extracted oil was evaporated and the resulting oil further dried to constant weight in the oven. This study demonstrates that Moringa oleifera oil can be extracted from its seed using ethanol and acetone as extraction solvent. The optimum process variables for both solvent (ethanol and acetone) was determined at sample weight of 40 g, particle size of 325 ㎛ and extraction time of 8 hours. It can be deduced that using acetone as solvent produces a higher yield of oil at the same optimum variable conditions compared to when ethanol was used.
The lattice-spring-based synthetic rock mass model (LS-SRM) technique has been extensively employed in large open-pit mining and underground projects in the last decade. Since the LS-SRM requires a complex and time-consuming calibration process, a robust approach was developed using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to optimize the calibration procedure. For this purpose, numerical models were designed using the Box-Behnken Design technique, and numerical simulations were performed under uniaxial and triaxial stress states. The model input parameters represented the models' micro-mechanical (lattice) properties and the macro-scale properties, including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), elastic modulus, cohesion, and friction angle constitute the output parameters of the model. The results from RSM models indicate that the lattice UCS and lattice friction angle are the most influential parameters on the macro-scale UCS of the specimen. Moreover, lattice UCS and elastic modulus mainly control macro-scale cohesion. Lattice friction angle (flat joint fiction angle) and lattice elastic modulus affect the macro-scale friction angle. Model validation was performed using physical laboratory experiment results, ranging from weak to hard rock. The results indicated that the RSM model could be employed to calibrate LS-SRM numerical models without a trial-and-error process.
In the present study, the finite volume method is applied for the thermal performance prediction of the natural ventilation system using vertical solar chimney whereas, design parameters are optimized through the response surface methodology (RSM). The computational simulations are performed for various parameters of the solar chimney such as absorber temperature (40≤Tabs≤70℃), inlet temperature (20≤T0≤30℃), inlet height of (0.1≤h≤0.2 m) and chimney width (0.1≤d≤0.2 m). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out to identify the design parameters that influence the average Nusselt number (Nu) and mass flow rate (ṁ). Then, quadratic polynomial regression models were developed to predict of all the response parameters. Consequently, numerical and graphical optimizations were performed to achieve multi-objective optimization for the desired criteria. According to the desirability function approach, it can be seen that the optimum objective functions are Nu=25.67 and ṁ=24.68 kg/h·m, corresponding to design parameters h=0.18 m, d=0.2 m, Tabs=46.81℃ and T0=20℃. The optimal ventilation flow rate is enhanced by about 96.65% compared to the minimum ventilation rate, while solar energy consumption is reduced by 49.54% compared to the maximum ventilation rate.
Response surface methodology (RSM) empirically studies the relationship between a response variable and input variables in the product or process development phase. The ultimate goal of RSM is to find an optimal condition of the input variables that optimizes (maximizes or minimizes) the response variable. RSM can be seen as a knowledge management tool in terms of creating and utilizing data, information, and knowledge about a product production and service operations. In the field of product or process development, most real-world problems often involve a simultaneous consideration of multiple response variables. This is called a multiple response surface (MRS) problem. Various approaches have been proposed for MRS optimization, which can be classified into loss function approach, priority-based approach, desirability function approach, process capability approach, and probability-based approach. In particular, the loss function approach is divided into univariate and multivariate approaches at large. This paper focuses on the univariate approach. The univariate approach first obtains the mean square error (MSE) for individual response variables. Then, it aggregates the MSE's into a single objective function. It is common to employ the weighted sum or the Tchebycheff metric for aggregation. Finally, it finds an optimal condition of the input variables that minimizes the objective function. When aggregating, the relative weights on the MSE's should be taken into account. However, there are few studies on how to determine the weights systematically. In this study, we propose an interactive procedure to determine the weights through considering a decision maker's preference. The proposed method is illustrated by the 'colloidal gas aphrons' problem, which is a typical MRS problem. We also discuss the extension of the proposed method to the weighted MSE (WMSE).
This study examined the optimal salting drying method and processing conditions (salt concentration, curing time, dry temperature, and drying time) for preparing salted semi-dried common gray mullet (SSD-CGM) Mugil cephalus based on the moisture content, salinity, and overall acceptance using response surface methodology (RSM). The moisture content, salinity, and overall acceptance of SSD-CGM prepared with different salting methods revealed that dry salting was the optimal salting method for preparing high-quality SSD-CGM. The optimal drying method for preparing high-quality SSD-CGM based on the drying velocity and sensory color was hot air-blast drying. The results of the RSM program indicated that the optimal independent variables ($X_1$, salt concentration; $X_2$, curing time; $X_3$, dry temperature; $X_4$, drying time) based on the dependent variables ($Y_1$, moisture content; $Y_2$, salinity; $Y_3$, overall acceptance) for high-quality SSD-CGM were 5.6% for $X_1$, 2.7 h for $X_2$, $47.0^{\circ}C$ for $X_3$, and 8.5 h for $X_4$ for uncoded values. The predicted values of $Y_1$, $Y_2$, and $Y_3$ for SSD-CGM prepared under optimal conditions were 54.4%, 4.2%, and 6.3, respectively, while the experimental values were $55.2{\pm}1.0%$, $4.1{\pm}0.3%$ and $6.7{\pm}0.8$. The actual and predicted values did not differ.
The removal of turbidity from $TiO_2$ wastewater by an electrocoagulation/flotation process was studied in a batch reactor. The response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to evaluate the simple and combined effects of the three main independent parameters, current, NaCl dosage and initial pH of the $TiO_2$ solution on the turbidity removal efficiency, and to optimize the operating conditions of the treatment process. The reaction of electrocoagulation/flotation was modeled by use of the Box-Behnken method, which was used for the fitting of a 2nd order response surface model. The application of RSM yielded the following regression equation, which is an empirical relationship between the turbidity removal efficiency of $TiO_2$ wastewater and test variables in uncoded unit: Turbidity removal (%)=69.76+59.76Current+11.98NaCl+4.67pH+5.00Current${\times}$pH-160.11$Current^2-0.34pH^2$. The optimum current, NaCl dosage and pH of the $TiO_2$ solution to reach maximum removal rates were found to be 0.186 A, 0.161 g/l and 7.599, respectively. This study clearly showed that response surface methodology was one of the most suitable method to optimize the operating conditions for maximizing the turbidity removal. Graphical response surface and contour plots were used to locate the optimum point.
This study was performed to develop and evaluate functional prepared with optimum mixing of mulberry leaf and fruit powder using response surface method (RSM). In order to develop the optimized functional Nokdujukr using RSM, mulberry leaf powder (MLP:X1) and mulberry fruit powder (MLF:X2) were set as independent variables, and pH (Y1), sweetness (Y2), viscosity (Y3), L (Y4), a (Y5), b (Y6), color (Y7), flavor (Y8), taste (Y9), overall quality (Y10), TPC (Y11), and DPPH radical scavenging ability ($IC_{50}$)(Y12) were set as dependent variables. The optimum mixing ratio of MLP and MLF was determined to be 3.88 g of MLP and 6 g of MLF. The values of color, flavor, taste, overall quality, TPC, and DPPH radical scavenging ability ($IC_{50}$) of optimized Nokdujuk were 5.20, 5.85, 6.00, 6.22, 330.99 mg TAE/g and 650.10 g/mL, respectively. In conclusion, this study has led to the development of an improved version of Nokdujuk that has antioxidative properties and good sensory evaluation and, will likely serve as a functional meal replacement for the busy modern world.

Four groups of six growing gilts each were fed ad libitum diets composed of cereals and soyabean (SBM) or rapeseed (RSM) meal and containing two levels of crude protein: high - 18.0% (RSM-H) and 16.9% (SBM-H) or low - 15.6% (RSM-L) and 15.1% (SBM-L). The diets were balanced by supplementation with crystalline amino acids and contained apparent ileal digestible lysine, methionine, threonine and tryptophan in proportions (1.00:0.32:0.57:0.18) according to CVB (1995). Voluntary feed intake, weight gain and slaughter and chemical body composition of animals were assessed. Protein and energy balances from 25 to 70 kg body weight were calculated by the comparative slaughter method. Protein source had a significant effect on voluntary feed intake; it was 0.12 kg/d lower in pigs fed the SBM than RSM-diets. Pigs fed on the SBM-L diet consumed the least amount of feed (2.17 kg). Daily gain (average, $900{\pm}12.59g$) and feed conversion ratio ($2.54{\pm}0.04kg/kg$) were not statistically affected by source (SMB and RSM) and protein level (high and low). In empty body similar amounts (g/kg) of protein (163 g), water (635 g) and ash (28 g) were found. However, pigs fed the RSM-L diet were fatter than those fed the SBM-L diet (188 vs. 161 g/kg). No statistical differences were observed in daily protein deposition, which on average amounted to $142{\pm}11g$, or carcass characteristics. An improvement of crude protein utilization by 6.3 percentage units was found by decreasing the protein concentration in the diets. Heat production in the body was not significantly affected by the treatments.
In this study, an optimization for the production of water emulsion was designed by adding an extract of wheat sprout, which is known to contain a large amount of antioxidants. The central composite design of reaction surface analysis method (CCD-RSM) was used for the optimization process. The amount of emulsifier, emulsification time, and added amount of wheat sprout extract were selected as independent variables based on our preliminary experiments. The mean droplet size (MDS), viscosity, and emulsion stability index (ESI) were set as the responses to evaluate the stability of the emulsion. For each independent variable, the P-value and coefficient of determination were evaluated to verify the reliability of the experiments. From the result of CCD-RSM, optimum conditions for the emulsification were determined as 23.6 min, 7.7 wt.%, and 3.9 wt.% for the emulsification time, amount of emulsifier, and amount of sprout, respectively. From the optimized condition obtained, MDS, viscosity, and ESI after 7 days from reaction were estimated as 252.3 nm, 616.7 cP, and 88.7%, respectively. The overall satisfaction was 0.9137, which supported the validity of the experiments, and the error rate was measured at 0.5% or less by advancing the experiments. Therefore, an optimized process for producing an emulsion by adding the malt extract was designed by the CCD-RSM.
