  • Manning's roughness coefficients for the Han River, the Nakdong River and the Geum River were determined by the hydraulic models using their field measurements. The roughness coefficients of present study were compared with the ones of the conventional references. The hydraulic models, such as HEC-2, HEC-RAS and FLDWAV models, are usually applied to a river flow analysis. In order to compute the accurate flood level with the numerical models, accurate information about river sections, the upstream and downstream boundary conditions, and the appropriate roughness coefficients are indispensable. It is hard to obtain the reasonable roughness coefficient of the river, in the other hand the river cross sectional data and the boundary conditions are relatively easy to acquire. The coefficient values from the references are applied in many applications without considering the variation of locations and discharges of the river, or the values are unreasonably estimated. The final results from this study will give a reasonable and important data to perform the flood routing in the Korea river.

  • The backscattering coefficients of a bare soil surface were measured using an R-band polarimetric scatterometer, which were used to verify the validities of scattering models and inversion algorithms. The soil moisture contents and the surface roughness parameters (the RMS height and correlation length) were also measured from the soil surface. The backscattering coefficients were obtained from several scattering models with these surface parameters, and the computation results were compared with the measured backscattering coefficients. The soil moisture contents of the surface were retrieved from the measured backscattering coefficients, and compared with the measured surface parameters. This paper shows how well the scattering models agree with the measurements, and also shows the inversion results.

  • This paper presents soil moisture retrieval from measured polarimetric backscattering coefficients of a vegetated surface. Based on the analysis of the quite complicate first-order radiative transfer scattering model for vegetated surfaces, a simplified scattering model is proposed for an inversion algorithm. Extraction of the surface-scatter component from the total scattering of a vegetation canopy is addressed using the simplified model, and also using the three-component decomposition technique. The backscattering coefficients are measured with a polarimetric L-band scatterometer during two months. At the same time, the biomasses, leaf moisture contents, and soil moisture contents are also measured. Then the measurement data are used to estimate the model parameters for vv-, hh-, and vh-polarizations. The scattering model for tall-grass-covered surfaces is inverted to retrieve the soil moisture content from the measurements using a genetic algorithm. The retrieved soil moisture contents agree quite well with the in-situ measured soil moisture data.

  • The research estimated the roughness coefficients for the reach of Hwawon-Goryeonggyo-Hyeongpung stage stations in the Nakdong River through hydraulic channel routing. The data needed were only stage data from the three stations and river cross section data. Stage-discharge relations were determined from the computed discharges by the channel routing. They are better than the previous stage-discharge relations from direct measurements. Discharge computation errors from stage errors were analyzed and a simple method was suggested to limt reach lengths from prohibiting large errors from lateral inflows.

  • The roughness coefficients at stage gaging station were calculated and suggested based upon figures and formulae. The results shows that roughness coefficient decreases by increasing the discharge with the exception of no change or increasing in the cases having the tall vegetation and big influence from the stream bank. As a result of the research about the water quality in streams, vegetation and aquatic organisms, the paper suggests the need for management system to protect the organisms in danger of extinction and the need for preserving the diverse species at the estuary that is located in the downstream.

  • The friction coefficients of advanced high strength steel sheets were experimentally determined. In the friction test, the pulling and holding forces acting on the sheet for various friction conditions, such as lubricant viscosity, pulling speed, blank holding pressure, sheet surface roughness, and hardness of the sheet were measured and the friction coefficient was calculated based on Coulomb's friction law. While the friction coefficient, generally, decreases as the value of friction factor increases, the factor associated with the sheet surface roughness shows U shape behavior for the friction coefficient. Furthermore, the relationship between friction coefficient and the wear volume, which was computed for the roughness of both sheet surfaces and the friction area, is linearly proportional.

  • Newsprint is quantitatively the most important printing paper. The demands for its printability are continuously increasing. It is well known that the relationship between the physically tested paper properties and newspaper printability is unsatisfactory. In order to improve the printing quality of Korean newsprint, the printability coefficients such as maximum ink requirement(Ymax), print through were investigated. Kinds of newspapers and black printing ink were tested by IGT printability tester. Experiment condition of IGT printability tester was 14 steps between $0.2{\sim}2.8g/m^2$ of ink requirement, printing pressure was 200 N and printing velocity was 1 m/sec. The properties of newspaper samples (basis weight, bulk density, roughness, smoothness, porosity, i. e.) were examined in accordance with KS and TAPPI standard testing methods. The result of this study are respected for usefulness printing quality management of Korean newsprint.

  • The aim of the present paper is to analyze the friction and mass flow in a rough microchannel using Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). The LBM is a kinetic method based on the particle distribution function, so it can be fruitfully used to study the flow dependence on Knudsen number including slip velocity, pressure drop in rough microchannel. The surface roughness elements are taken to be considered as a series of circular shaped riblets throughout the channel with relative roughness height up to a maximum 10% of the channel height. The friction coefficients in terms of Poiseuille number (Pn), mass flow rate and the flow behaviors have been discussed in order to study the effect of surface roughness in the slip flow regime at Knudsen number (Kn), ranging from 0.01 to 0.10. It is seen that the friction factor and the flow behaviors in a rough microchannel strongly depend on the rarefaction effect and the relative roughness height. The friction factor in a rough microchannel is higher than that in smooth channel but the mass flow rate is lower than that of smooth channel. Moreover, it is seen that the friction factor increased with relative roughness height but decreased with increasing the Kundsen number (Kn) whereas the mass flow rate is decreased with increasing both of surface roughness height and Knudsen number.
