There has been considerable research dealing with the influence of surface roughness along surfaces of rock discontinuities in relation to the peak shear strength of rock masses. Concepts accepted recently for measuring such strength include estimation of a roughness coefficient such as developed by Barton's studies. The method for estimation the Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) value of a measured roughness profile is subjective. The aim of this research is to estimate the JRC value of the roughness of a surface profile in a rock mass system using an objective method. The study of roughness of surfaces has included measurement of fractal geometric characteristics. Once the irregularity of the surface has been described by the fractal dimension, the spatial variation of the surface irregularities can be described using variogram and drift analysis. An empirical relationships between the roughness profiles of selected JRC ranges and their fractal dimension with variogram and drift were derived. The application of analyses of fractal dimension, variogram and drift was novel for the analysis of roughness profiles. Also, an empirical equation was applied to experimental data.

The roughness coefficients were estimated by the Manning's equation for the measured stage and flow velocity of Bocheong stream basin in Kum river. The relationships between the estimated roughness coefficients and the geomorphologic factors were formulated by the linear, logarithmic, exponential and power type function, thereafter correlation equations were presented. The correlation analysis was performed between the measured stream length and the basin area of Bocheong stream basin by the linear, logarithmic, exponential and power type function, and correlation equation for the stream length was given. The roughness coefficient has strong correlationship with stream slope, but low correlation coefficients with stream length and basin area. For the correlationship with the roughness coefficients and the stream slope, the logarithmic type function has the smallest correlation coefficient, on the other hand, the exponential type function has the largest correlation coefficient. For the relationship between the stream length and the basin area, the correlation coefficient of the logarithmic type function shows the smallest value, linear type function shows the largest value.

In this study, the effect of design factors in a pump station on the pressure variations which are the main cause of water hammering has been investigated by numerical simulations. As design factors, the flow rate, Young's modulus, diameter, thickness, roughness coefficient of pipeline are considered. The relationships between the pressure variations and the design factors are analyzed. The results show that the pressure variation increases sensitively with the flow rate and Young's modulus, and increases gradually with the thickness and roughness coefficient of pipe, whereas it decreases with the pipe diameter. The wavelength of the pressure wave becomes longer for a smaller Young's modulus, a smaller pipe thickness and a bigger pipe diameter. These relationships are nondimensionalized, and logarithmic curve-fitted functions are proposed by regression analysis. Most effective factors on the nondimensional pressure variation is Young's modulus. Flow rate, roughness coefficient, relative thickness and pipe diameters are the next impact factors.

Field measurements of resistance to flow are analyzed for 739 rivers vegetated with grass (281 channels), shrubs (150 channels) and trees (308 channels). The measured distribution of Manning roughness coefficients ranges from 0.015~0.250 for grass, 0.016~0.250 for shrubs, 0.018~0.310 for trees. Significant trends are obtained between Darcy-Weisbach (or Manning roughness coefficients) and flow discharge, friction slope, and relative submergence. The regression equations for Darcy-Weisbach and Manning roughness coefficients in vegetated rivers are: $f_{veg}=0.436Q^{-0.363}$, $f_{veg}=3.305S_f^{0.508}$, and $n_{veg}=0.061Q^{-0.124}$, $n_{veg}=0.144S_f^{0.199}$, $V=5.3(h/d_{50})^{1/8.3}{\sqrt{ghS_f}}$, $\sqrt{8/f}(=V/u*)=5.75log(5h/d_{50})$, respectively. These semi-empirical relationships should be useful for hydraulic engineering practice.

An experimental study has been carried out using a rotating water channel in order to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the vertical dispersion of plume within boundary layer. Dispersion measurements of tracers released from two sources with different height at neutral conditions over various rough terrain ranging from rural to urban have been performed. Various values of roughness length were simulated by combining of 4 stream velocities and 3 roughness element conditions. Dispersion measurements have also been made for rough terrain where high buildings are locally concentrated. Values of $\sigma$z increase with roughness and this tendency appears to apply both cases of with and without locally concentrated high buildings. The comparisons of the Bowne's nomogram on $\sigma$2 vs x relationship and the measurements of $\sigma$2 with roughness show good accordance in $\sigma$2 distribution at stability D class over rural, suburban and urban terrain. For constant roughness length the $\sigma$2 values of plumes from lower source height are smaller than those of plumes from higher source at short downwind distance, but this relationship becomes reverse as distance increases. Crossing appears to be made before about 2km. The value of constant I in McMullen's equation $\sigma$2=exp [I+J(In x) + K(In x)2] appears to increase with roughness length, however, the relationships between other constants and roughness have been confirmed. The values of $\sigma$2 for various downwind distances, estimated by using an equation which is employed in ISC (Industrial Source Complex) dispersion model for areas where high buildings are locally assembled, are in accordance with measurements from water channel experiments.
The ten standard roughness profiles suggested by Barton and Choubey (1977) were extended to make three-dimensional (3D) joint models whose profiles were identical at any cross section. Replicas of joint models were produced using plaster of Paris, and direct shear tests were performed to verify the joint roughness coefficients (JRC) of the standard roughness profiles. Joint shear strengths measured by direct shear tests were compared with those predicted by the shear failure criterion suggested by Barton (1973) based on JRC, joint compressive strength (JCS), and joint basic friction angle (𝜙b). Shear strengths measured from joints of the first and fourth standard roughness profiles were close to predicted values; however, shear strengths measured from the other joint models were lower than predicted, the differences increasing as the roughness of joints increased. Back calculated values for JRC, JCS, and from the results of the direct shear tests show measured shear strengths were lower than predicted shear strengths because of the JRC values. New JRC were back calculated from the measured shear strength and named JRCm. Values of JRCm were lower than the JRC for the standard roughness profiles but show a strong linear relationship to JRC. Corrected JRCm values for the standard roughness profiles are provided and revised relationships between JRCm and JRC, and new shear strength criterion are suggested.
This study is runoff analysis of the recently urbanized San Bon basin. The relationships between peak discharge and total discharge were examined by applying the ILLUDAS runoff analysis model to the measured data. In urbanized streams, it is found that channel adjustment had the most significant effect on the increase of peak discharge. Significant increases in the peak discharge occurred as rainfall duration or return period increases 10% and 7~16% increases in peak discharge were observed when the roughness coefficient were 0.04 and 0.015, respectively. When the natural river channel with n=0.04 was converted into a sewerage system of n=0.015 the peak discharge was greatly increased by 51~158%, Generally, flood peak discharge was increased during heavy rain, but in the case of urbanized basin, river stage was reduced owing to an increase of flow velocity by the adjustment of drainage system.

TiN coated films show a good mechanical properties, high thermal properties and wear, erosion and corrosion resistance and are widely used as a coating materials in tools, ornaments, parts and semiconductors. In spite of these good properties, the fracture of TiN coated films occur during use. The fracture of TiN thin films is related to their microstructure. Especially, the life of TiN coated layer is related to the texture of the TiN films. One researcher suggested that the corrosion and erosion resistance of the TiN thin films is related to a uniform and dense structure of films. In this study, we studied the relationships between textures and friction coefficient, erosion and corrosion in TiN coated films. The flatness of (115) texture surface of TiN thin films is flatter than that of (111) texture surface. The friction coefficient of (115) texture surface of TiN thin films is similar with that of (111) texture surface. The wear resistance of (115) texture surface of TiN thin films is better than that of (111) texture surface. The erosion and corrosion resistance of (115) texture surface of TiN thin films is better than that of (111) torture surface. As well as texture, the wear, erosion and corrosion of TiN thin films has to consider defects such as pinholes, cracks, surface roughness and open columnar structure. The life of TiN coated products is influenced by the properties of wear, erosion, and corrosion resistance of TiN thin films and is related to texture of TiN coated films, density of pinholes and cracks, density of structure, and surface flatness.

Hydraulic engineers and scientists working on river restoration recognize the need for a deeper understanding of natural streams as a complex and dynamic system, which involves not only abiotic elements(flow, sediments) but also biotic components. From this point of view, the role played by riverine vegetation dynamics and flow conditions becomes essential. Hydro-mechanic interaction between flow and flexible plants covering a river bed is studied in this paper and some previous works are discussed. Measurements of turbulence and flow resistance in vegetated open channel were performed using rigid and flexible tube. Measuring detailed turbulent velocity profiles within and above submerged and flexible stems allowed to distinguish different turbulent regimes. Some interesting relationships were obtained between the velocity field and the deflected height of the plants, such as a reduced drag coefficient in the flexible stems. Turbulent intensities and Reynolds stresses were measured showing two different regions : above and inside the vegetation domain. In flexible vegetated open channel, the maximum values of turbulent intensities and Reynolds stresses appear above the top of canopy. Method to predict a flow resistance in flexible vegetated open channel is developed by modifying an analytical model proposed by Klopstra et al. (1997). Calculated velocity profiles and roughness values correspond well with flume experiments. These confirm the applicability of the presented model for open channel with flexible vegetation. The new method will be verified in the real vegetated conditions in the near future. After these verifications, the new method should be applied for nature rehabilitation projects such as river restorations.
