Purpose: This study compared and analyzed the effect of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) arm extension pattern and leg flexion pattern on the contralateral lower extremity muscles when the patterns were applied to the same subject. Methods: In the study, 35 healthy men and women who understood the PNF patterns were selected as participants. The participants completed the PNF arm extension-abduction-internal rotation pattern and leg flexion-adduction-external rotation with knee flexion pattern in the supine position. While the patients' completed each pattern, the contralateral leg muscle activity was measured to examine the irradiation effect. The maximum isometric contraction time of the muscles to be measured was kept for 5 seconds, and the mean value was obtained by repeating the pattern three times. Results: When the leg flexion-adduction-external rotation with knee flexion pattern was completed, the muscle activity in the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius of the contralateral lower extremity was significantly greater than that found in the PNF arm extension-abduction-internal rotation pattern. Conclusion: The PNF leg flexion pattern showed greater muscle activity on the contralateral lower extremity than the arm extension pattern. Thus, the PNF leg extension pattern is more effective in the activation of the muscles associated with weight-bearing activity.
Connections as basic elements and an integrated part of a steel frame has an effect on the frame's performance. Conventional analysis and design techniques are based on either idealized fixed or pinned conditions. In fact, the use of rigid or pinned connection model in steel frame analysis serves the purpose of simplifying the analysis and design processes, but all connections used in current pratice possess stiffness and transfer moment which fall between the extreme cases of fully rigid and ideally pinned. To predict the behavior of the semi-rigid steel frames, it is necessary to predict the moment-rotation behavior of the beam-to-column connections. In this research, prediction equation for moment-rotation behavior of the beam-to-column connection is suggested and the effect of design parameters has investigated. Prediction model, in a nondimensional form shows the moment-rotation characteristic for connections. It is composed of the curve fitting power function using standardization constant K and 4 parameter $KM_o$, ${\theta}_0$, b, n based on the pretest result about moment-rotation behavior of connection.

The effect of mold rotation on the transport process and resultant macrosegregation pattern during solidification of an Al-Cu alloy contained in a vertical axisymmetric annular mold cooled from the inner wall is numerically investigated. The mold initially at rest starts to rotate at a prescribed angular velocity simultaneously with the beginning of cooling. Computed results for a representative case show that the mold rotation essentially suppresses the development of both thermal and solutal convections in the melt, creating distinct characteristics such as the liquidus front, flow pattern and temperature distribution from those for the stationary mold. Thermal convection which develops at the early stages of cooling is soon extinguished by the rotating flow induced during spin-up, and thus does not effectively remove the initial superheat from the melt. On the other hand, solutal convection, though it weakens considerably and is confined within the mushy zone, still predominates over the solute redistribution process. With increasing the angular velocity, the solute transport in the axial direction is enhanced, whereas that in the radial direction is reduced. The final macrosegregation formed in the mold rotating at moderate angular velocities appears to be favorable in comparison with the stationary casting, in that not only relatively homogenized composition is achieved, but also a severely positive-segregated channel is restrained.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine EMG activities and VMO/VL ratio of the vastus medialis oblique, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris during squat exercise (knee angle: 15, 45, and 60 degrees; tibial rotation: internal rotation, neutral, and external rotation). Methods: Twelve subjects performed squat exercise at each knee angle and tibial rotation while electromyographic (EMG) activity was collected. Statistical analysis consisted of two-way repeated measures analysis of variance with post hoc analysis. Results: There were significant main effects of knee angles and foot positions and interaction effect on EMG activities of vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis. VMO/VL ratios were significantly different by tibial rotations and there was an interaction effect. A neutral position produced significantly more VMO/VL activity ratio than that from internally rotated position and externally rotated position at 60 degrees. Conclusion: Considering the interaction effects for EMG activity across quadriceps muscles tested, the 60 degrees knee angle with a neutral foot position may provide the most effective condition for patients with acute patellofemoral syndrome.
Background: This study aims to evaluate the effect of core stabilization exercise on the dynamic balance and horizontal rotation of the trunk in young adult men. Through this study, it is expected that various core stabilization exercises will prevent and treat musculoskeletal disease. Design: Randomized Controlled Trial. Methods: The study subjects were recruited from young adult men in their 20s and 30s living in Seoul, and after the randomized controlled trial, it was divided into an experimental group training core stabilization exercise(n=15) and a control group(n=15). The evaluation methods of this study were modified Star Excursion Balance Test(mSEBT), Functional Reach Test(FRT), and Trunk Rotation Test(TRT). The experimental group performed three sets of crunches and deadbug exercises twice a week for eight weeks, and the control group did not perform any exercises similar to core stabilization exercise during the experimental period. Results: The result of the experiment, the experimental group showed significant improvement in mSEBT(p<.05), FRT(p<.05) and TRT(p<.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, core stabilization exercises improved dynamic balance and horizontal rotation of the trunk. As a result of this study, core stabilization exercise can prevent and treat musculoskeletal diseases even in healthy people.
The rotation capacity of the moment connections could significantly influence on the seismic performance of steel moment resisting frames. Current seismic provisions require that beam-to-column connections in Intermediate Moment Frames (IMF) should have a drift capacity as large as 0.02 radian. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the rotation capacity of moment connections on the seismic performance of high-rise IMFs. For this purpose, thirty- and forty-story high-rise IMFs were designed according to the current seismic design provisions. The seismic performance of designed model frames was evaluated according to FEMA P695. This study showed that the forty-story IMF satisfied the seismic performance objective specified in FEMA P695 when the rotation capacity of the connections was larger than 0.02. However, thirty-story IMFs satisfied the performance objective when the connection rotation capacity is larger than 0.03.
Numerical simulations are conducted for laminar flow past a sphere rotating In the transverse direction, in order to investigate the effect of the rotation on the characteristics of flow over a sphere. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=100, 250 and 300 based on the free-stream velocity and the sphere diameter, and the rotational speeds are in the range of $0{\leq}{\omega}{\leq}1$, where ${\omega}^{\ast}$ is the maximum velocity on the sphere surface normalized by the free-stream velocity. At ${\omega}^{\ast}=0$ (without rotation), the flow past the sphere experiences steady axisymmeoy, steady planar-symmetry and unsteady planar-symmetry, respectively, at Re=100, 250 and 300. However, with rotation, the flow becomes planar-symmetric for all the cases investigated and the symmetry plane is orthogonal to the axis of the rotation. The flow is also steady or unsteady depending on both the Reynolds number and the rotational speed, and the vortical structures behind the sphere are significantly modified by the rotation. For example, at Re=300, hairpin vortices completely disappear in the wake at ${\omega}^{\ast}=0.4\;and\;0.6$, and at ${\omega}^{\ast}=1$ vortical structures of a high frequency are newly generated due to the shear layer instability. It is also shown that with increasing rotational speed, the time-averaged drag and lift coefficients increase monotonically.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate effects of shoulder adduction load on rotator cuff muscles, including the infraspinatus, during the external rotation exercise of shoulder. METHODS: This study investigated 16 healthy university students from Daegu University. Before the study started, all participants understood the content of this study. They signed an informed consent form. Five electrodes for surface electromyography (sEMG) were attached to their infraspinatus, middle deltoid, posterior deltoid, upper trapezius and pectoralis major. The participants then underwent the shoulder external rotation exercise with the shoulder adduction at three loads (0 mmHg, 20 mmHg and 40 mmHg) that were controlled using a stabilizer Pressure $Bio-feedback^{TM}$ device. The surface electrodes recorded the electromyographic data during the external rotation exercise of shoulder. RESULTS: The infraspinatus was most activated when the shoulder adduction pressure was 40 mmHg during the external rotation exercise of shoulder. The infraspinatus activation significantly increased when the shoulder adduction pressure intensity increased, while the middle deltoid activation and the posterior deltoid activation significantly decreased (p<.05). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, increases in shoulder adduction load intensity during shoulder external rotation exercises can have a positive effect on the infraspinatus, which consists of rotator cuff muscles, with minimal activity in the middle and posterior deltoid.
Bearing is a mechanical component that supports loads and transmits rotation. As the application of high-value-added products such as semiconductors, aviation, and robots have recently become diverse and more precise, an accurate bearing performance prediction and evaluation technology is required. Bearing performance evaluation can be divided into evaluations based on bearing theory and on numerical analysis. An evaluation based on numerical analysis is a technique that has been highlighted because the problems that remained unsolved owing to time problems can be solved through recent developments in computers. However, current studies have the disadvantage of not considering the essential changes over time and bearing rotation. In this study, bearing performance evaluation based on rigid body dynamic analysis considering rotation and load over time is performed. Rigid body dynamic analysis is performed for deep groove ball bearing to calculate the load applied by the ball. The reliability of the analysis is verified by comparing it with the results calculated using bearing theory. In addition, rigid body dynamic analysis is performed for automotive wheel bearings to calculate the contact angle and load applied by the ball for cases where axial load and radial load are applied, respectively. The effect of rotation and load over time is evaluated from these results.

Purpose: This study compared the effects of Static stretching and Mulligan's Two-leg rotation about the Hamstring flexibility, Hip range of motion, and pain. Methods: The subjects were allocated randomly into two groups: Static stretching group (n=13) and Mulligan's two leg rotation group (n=14). The study was designed with stretching protocols for four minutes and thirty seconds per day five times a week for three weeks in total. Measurements, including the Sit and reach test, Active/Passive Straight leg raise, and Visual analogue scale, were conducted before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed using a paired t-test and independent t-test. Results: The flexibility of the two leg rotation group was higher than the static stretching group after the intervention. The post-sit and reach test value of the two leg rotation group was significantly higher than the pre-sit and reach test value of the static stretching group. In addition, the variance of the sit and reach test of the two leg rotation group was significantly higher than that of the static stretching group. Conclusion: These results showed that two leg rotation techniques have a positive effect on the changes in the sit and reach test and active straight leg raise test. Two leg rotation techniques can be recommended as a self-stretching and easier way to stabilize the lumbopelvic rhythm, reduce the stiffness of the muscle and relieve pain. This is effective in preventing muscle damage, enabling muscle relaxation and reducing the risk of injury to the spine during daily lives and in sports activities.
