Centrifugal blowers are widely used for air handling units in industry applications. The blower has a centrifugal impeller and a scroll casing including a driving component such as an electric motor. The impeller takes forward or backward blades to induce flows into the blower, Comprehensive investigation according to the two kinds of blades is systematically carried out for a guidance of design for this kind research. It is observed that flow rate of the blower with forward blades is larger than that of the system with backward blades. Otherwise, the system noise is more pronounced in the case of the blower with forward blades. The reason is due to larger velocity from the rotating forward blades that pose obtuse angle with the circumferential direction. The distinguished characteristics are validated by a parallel experiments with a wind tunnel and in an anechoic chamber. Numerical analysis for the system shows detail information inside the blades and the casing. A series of figures to show the flow details offer deep understanding of the performance of a centrifugal blower with different blades.
The flow characteristics of developing unsteady laminar flow in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct are experimentally investigated by using laser doppler velocimerty (LDV) system with data acquisition and processing system of rotating machinery resolver(RMR) and PHASE software. The major flow characteristics of developing laminar pulsating flows are presented by mean velocity profilel velocity distribution of secondary flow, wall shear stress distributions, entrance lengths according to dimensionless angular frequency($\omega^+$), velocity amplitude ratio($A^1$), and time-averaged Dean number($De_ta$). The velocity profiles and wall shear stress distribution of laminar pulsating flow with dimensionlessangular frequency show the flow characteristics of the quasi-steady laminar flow in a curved duct. The developing region of laminar pulsatile flows in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct is extended to the curved duct angle of approximately $120^{\circ}$ under the present experimental condition.
Video mosaicing techniques have been widely used in virtual reality environments. Especially in GIS field, video mosaics are becoming more and more common in representing urban environments. Such applications mainly use spherical or panoramic mosaics that are based on images taken from a rotating camera around its nodal point. The viewpoint, however, is limited to location within a small area. On the other hand, 2D-mosaics, which are based on images taken from a translating camera, can acquire data in wide area. The 2D-mosaics still have some problems : it can‘t be applied to images taken from a rotational camera in large angle. To compensate those problems , we proposed a novel method for creating video mosaics in 3D space. The proposed algorithm consists of 4 steps: feature -based optical flow detection, camera orientation, 2D-image projection, and image registration in 3D space. All of the processes are fully automatic and successfully implemented and tested with real images.
The purpose of this study was conducted to make a comparative biomechanical analysis of X-factor and X-factor stretch during driver and iron swing. The subjects were composed of 10 professional golfers with more than 10 years career. The result was as follows: First, the analysis of the back swing with driver and iron swing showed no differences statistically between both the timing in horizontal rotating of shoulder and hip, the time required for X-factor stretch also showed no differences statistically. Second, the back swing with a driver swing showed more maximum horizontal rotation of shoulder and hip joint than the back swing with an iron swing, but the twist of shoulder and hip that was X-factor stretch angle showed no difference. Third, the GRF of the max value for the left and right foot during shoulder and hip horizontal rotation of back swing showed no differences statistically in the movement of driver and iron swing during the back swing, and the GRF of X-factor stretch for the left and right foot showed no differences statistically in driver and iron swing. Therefore the result of this research showed that the operation of torso(X-factor stretch) and weight shifting were similar although the horizontal rotation of body was different during the driver and iron swing.

A low power consuming laser scanning vibrometer is studied for its development. For its optical system, a laser interferometer is constructed to use the Doppler effect. In order to reduce the driving power of the scanning system, a small displacement of the scanning system is produced, which is achieved by using a magnetostrictive actuator. A sufficient rotating angle of the scanning system is obtained by using an amplified displacement from the resonant phenomena of a second order mechanical system composed of a mass and spring. The control of the magnetostrictive actuator using a Terfenol-D is performed without using a feedback system to help reduce the power consumption. The vibration analysis is made for the sinusoidal scanning input to have the space domain information from the time domain of the velocity of a vibration object. As a partial work of development of a tow power consuming laser scanning vibrometer, in this work, a scanning system which has the above features is developed and experimentally investigated. For the purpose of the optical system calibration, the vibration measurement for one axis is presented and the future works are discussed.

In this study, a dynamic analysis of the reciprocating compression mechanism considering viscous friction force of a piston used in small refrigeration compressors is performed. The length of cylinder in this class of compressors is shortening to diminish the frictional losses of the piston-cylinder system. So, the contacting length between piston and cylinder liner is in variable with the rotating crank angle around the BDC of the reciprocating piston. In the problem formulation of the compression mechanism dynamics, the change in bearing length of the piston and all corresponding viscous forces and moments are considered in order to determine the trajectories of piston and crankshaft. The piston orbits for viscous friction model and Coulomb friction model were used to compare the effect of the friction forces of piston on the dynamic trajectories of piston. To investigate the effect of friction force acting on the piston for the dynamic characteristics of crankshaft, comparison of the crankshaft loci is given in both viscous model and Coulomb model. Results show that the viscous friction force of piston must be considered in calculating for the accurate dynamic characteristics of the reciprocating compression mechanism.
We have performed a quantum-chemical investigation on the conformations and electronic properties of a variety of methoxy-substituted poly(p-phenylenevinylenes) (PPVs) to elucidate the effects of alkoxy substitution. Geometrical parameters for the polymers were fully optimized through Austin Model I (AM I) semi-empirical Hartree-Fock (HF) band calculations. Electronic properties of the polymers were obtained by applying the AM I optimized structures to the modified extended Huckel method. To confirm validity of the AM I conformational results, we also carried out ab initio HF calculations with the 6-31G (d) basis set for a variety of methoxy-substituted divinylbenzenes. It is found that the potential energy surfaces of alkoxy-substituted PPVs are quite shallow around the planar conformations, suggesting that the prepared films possess a variety of conformations with different torsion angle in the solid state, depending on the synthetic conditions. When two alkoxy groups are concurrently substituted at the adjacent sites in the phenylene ring, these groups are subject to rotating around the C(sp2)-O bonds by 70-80° to avoid the strong steric repulsion between them. Consequently, the overlap between the π-type p orbital of oxygen and the π molecular orbitals of the polymer decreases. This leads to a wide gap and a high oxidation potential for tetramethoxy-substituted PPV, compared to those of dialkoxy-substituted PPV.

The effects of blade leading edge sweep on both the aerodynamic performance and the structure stress of a high pressure centrifugal compressor impeller are numerically investigated. Changes in the flow structure occur as a result of the effect of leading edge sweep on the loading distribution in the tip region. The flow separation is avoided by introducing a sweep of the main blade leading edge and the strength of shock is reduced at the same time. Backswept of the leading edge is found to be beneficial to the impeller performance improving. On the other hand, the structural analysis indicated that high rotating speed of the impeller will cause substantial high bending stresses and radial deflections of the blade. Studies have shown that it is possible to control the stress distribution along the tip and root of the blade by slight adjustments to the sweep angle of the leading edge. These adjustments may be used to design the impeller with lower blade root stress distribution without aerodynamics performance penalty.
Control of vibrations against extraordinary excitations such as wind and earthquake is very important to the protection of life and financial concerns. One of the methods of structural control is to use Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD), however due to the nature of TLD only one sloshing frequency can be created when the water is sloshing. Among various ideas proposed to compensate this problem, by changing the angle of some rotatable baffles embedded inside a TLD, a frequency range is created such that these baffles are tuned manually at different frequencies. In this study, the effect of cross sectional shape of container with rotating baffles on seismic behavior of TLD is experimentally studied. For this purpose, rectangular and cylindrical containers are designed and used to suppress the vibrations of a Single Degree-Of-Freedom (SDOF) structure under harmonic and earthquake excitations considering three baffle angles. The results show that the rectangular-shaped damper reduces the structural response in all load cases more than the damper with a cylindrical shape, such that maximum differences of two dampers to reduce the structural displacement and structural acceleration are 5.5% and 3% respectively, when compared to the cases where no baffles are employed.

We present the results from a spectroscopic survey of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2107 at z=0.04 that has been known as a rotating cluster. By combining 978 new redshifts from the MMT/Hectospec observations with the data in the literature, we construct a large sample of 1968 galaxies with measured redshifts at R<60', which results in high (80%) and spatially uniform completeness at $m_{r,Petro,0}<19.1$. We use this sample to study the global rotation of the cluster and its connection to the large-scale structures in the universe. We first apply the caustic method to the sample and identify 285 member galaxies in Abell 2107 at R<60'. We then measure the rotation amplitude and the position angle of rotation axis. The member galaxies show strong global rotation at R<20' ($V/{\sigma}{\sim}0.60-0.70$) with a significance of >3.8 ${\sigma}$, which is confirmed by two independent methods. The rotation becomes weaker in outer regions. We find at least four filamentary structures at $R<30h^{-1}Mpc$ smoothly connected to the cluster galaxies, which can suggest that the global rotation of the cluster is induced by the inflow of galaxies from the surrounding large-scale structures in the universe.
