The Occurrence of Glauconite Grains on the Continental Shelves off the Korean Peninsula: Distribution, Morphology and Origin

  • Glauconite grains are widely distributed in the outer shelf surficial sandy sediments of the Korean continental shelves. Morphologically, these grains are characterized by ovoidal-shaped pellets with bulbous exterior, greenish color and moderately well polished surface. In thin sections, the glauconite grains are massive and contain numerous impurities composed mainly of quartz, feldspar and mica. The morphologies and microscopic examinations indicate mainly fecal pellet as a parent matierials for glauconite. SEM examination shows that glauconitic smectite crystals grow in pores and along fractures of the host grains, commonly as a boxwork arrangement or rosette clusters of blades. Bulbous external shape, high potassium content and rosette-shaped smectite structure, reflect the evolved stage (more than 10$^4$ years in age) of glauconite authigenesis. Moreover, the association of the glauconite grains with the relict sandy sediments on the outer shelf, impliesthat the glauconite grains are geologically old, or at least have formed under the environmental conditions different from the present shelf. The widespread occurrence of the glauconite grains, therefore, might be primarily related with redeposition of sediments transported from the outer shelf during Holocene transgression.

NEAR-FIELD DILUTION OF ROSETTE TYPE MULTIPORT WASTEWATER DIFFUSERS

  • In this paper, mixing characteristics and dilution of the merging buoyant discharges from array of multiple jets has been extensively studied in the hydraulic model experiments. New equations for dilution, which include the merging effects correctly, were derived. Experiments were constructed in a 20-m long, 4.9-m wide and 0.6-m deep flume, and the model diffuser was manufactured to indicate the typical characteristics of the existing ocean wastewater outfall in South Korea. Buoyant discharge from the diffuser was reproduced using heated water. Water temperature was measured using CC-Type thermocouple sensors, which were connected to a 40-channel data logger. Experimental results show that merging between ports in a particular riser is dependent upon the discharge densimetric Froude number, whereas merging between two ports which are facing each other at 90$\circ$ at the adjacent risers is dependent upon the discharge densimetric Froude number and distance from the port and port spacing. Centerline dilution increase with distance from the port outlet until two plumes has merged. However, after merging occurs, increase of the centerline dilution almost stops. Further distance from the position where merging occurs, centerline dilution increases again.

  • This study was done to know the effects of the water extracts of Gyogamdan(GGD) on the function of macrophages, the most important cells of the innate immune system, and the rosette forming ability of splenocytes in the mouse under stress. The effects of GGD on the immunosuppression induced by noise stress are as follows. 1. Administration of GGD water extracts normalized the bo요 weight which might be decreased by noise stress. 2. Administration of GGD water extracts increased the production of the such reactive oxygen intermediates as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide from macrophsges in vivo & in vitro which were decreased by noise stress. 3. Administration of GGS water extracts did not affect the production of reactive nitrogen intermediates. 4. Administration of GGD water extracts increased the rosette forming ability of splenocytes which was decreased by noise stress. The above effects of GGD might be useful for the treatment of stress-induced infections diseases which could be caused by the suppression of immune responeses which are initiated by the functions of macrophages of the innate immune system.

  • A monoclonal antibody(MAb), KCT-23ER, with specificity for E-rosetted T cells of Korean native cattle was prepared by cell hybridization of myeloma P3/NS-1/1-Ag-4-1 and spleen cells from BALB/c mice hyperimmunized with E-rosetted lymphocytes. The isotype of KCT-23ER to T lymphocytes was mouse $IgG_{2b}$. KCT-23ER was reacted with 53.6% to peripheral blood lymphocytes and with 67.8% to nylon wool nonadherent blood lymphocytes. And it was reacted with 72.2%, 59.2% and 35.3% to thymocytes, prescapular lymph node cells and splenocytes, respectively. Immunocytological reactive rates to E-rosetted and non-E-rosetted cells were 72.5% and 22.4%, respectively. These results indicated that KCT-23ER reacted to E-rosetted cells was one of the MAb for investigate of $CD_2$ receptor positive cell subset in the Korean native cattle.

로젯 패턴을 이용한 영상 검색 기법 (Image Retrieval Using the Rosette Pattern)

  • 본 논문에서는 영상에 대해 영상 중심 부분에 주사가 집중되는 특정을 지닌 로젯 패턴을 적용함으로써 영상의 전체적인 그레이 분포 특징뿐만 아니라 국부적인 위치 정보까지 얻을 수 있으며 이를 히스토그램 분포 특성으로 변환시켜 데이터베이스의 색인 정보로 저장한 후, 입력되는 질의 영상에 대해 사용자가 원하는 검색 결과를 제시하는 방법에 대해 제안한다. 실험 결과 제안된 방법이 검색에 있어 우수한 성능을 갖추고 또한 색인에 필요한 메모리 공간을 크게 줄일 수 있음을 확인하였다.

  • 항공기 등은 미사일의 추적을 피하기 위해 대응능력(countermeasure)으로 섬광탄(flare)을 운용한다. 일반적으로 적외선 섬광탄은 표적에 비해 높은 방사 에너지를 방출하여, 미사일이 표적 대신 섬광탄을 추적하도록 설계된다. 따라서 섬광탄이 존재하는 상황하에서 표적을 정확하게 추적하기 위해서는 섬광탄 및 배경 등으로부터 표적신호를 분리하여 표적을 인식해야 한다. 본 논문에서는 섬광탄의 영항을 배제하고 정확히 표적을 추적하기 위해 자외선 및 적외선 대역을 이용하는 2-color 로젯 주사 탐색기(rosette scan seeker)를 시뮬레이션 하였다. 각 대역에서 얻어진 표적 및 섬광탄, 구름 신호 특성을 분석하였으며, 이로부터 표적을 정확히 검출함을 확인하였다.

가미보아탕(加味保我湯) 및 수종(數種) 한방처방의 항암효과에 대한 연구 (Anti-cancer Effects of Kamiboa-tang and some other Traditional Medical Prescriptions)

  • Objectives : Anticancer and immune-modulating effects of several Korean medical prescriptions including Yukgunja-tang, Bohwa-tang, Sogam-Won, and Kamiboa-tang were investigated. Methods : In vitro anti-cancer effects were measured by cytotoxicity MTT assay using SNU-1 gastric cancer cell lines, In vivo anti-cancer effects were measured by increased life span of S-180 sarcoma-injected ICR mouse. Immune-modulating effects were analyzed by measuring hemagglutinin titer, appearance of rosette forming cells, lymphocyte proliferation, and phagocytic index in methotrexate-pretreated mice. Results : In vitro assay showed that only Sogam-won showed cytotoxic effect with $IC_{50}$ of 87.9 ${\mu}g/ml$. All other prescriptions showed no cytotoxic effects against SNU-1 gastric cancer cell line. However, in vivo assay showed that Sogam-won showed lowest anti-cancer effects in contrast to its highest cytotoxic effects, Kamiboa-tang, which showed no cytotoxic effect, showed the highest in vivo anticancer effects, with increased life span of 140%. Kamiboa-tang showed significant immune-enhancing activities by significantly increasing rosette forming cells, lymphocyte proliferation, and phagocytic index in methotrexate-pretreated mice (P<0.05). Conclusion : The anticancer effect of Kamiboa-tang is not mediated by direct inhibition of cancer cells but is mediated by improving immune reactions against cancer cells.

Methotraxate로 유발된 생쥐의 면역반응(免疫反應)에 대한 당귀육황탕(當歸六黃場)과 옥병풍산가미방(玉屛風散加味方)의 효과(效果) (Effects of Dangkwiyughwangtang and Okbyoungpoongsangamibang on the immune response induced by Methotrexate in mice)

  • Objectives : In order to study the effect of Dangkwiyughwangtang and Okbyoungpoongsangamibang on the immune response induced by methotrexate in mice. Method : Delayed type of hypersensitivity, hemagglutinin titer, hemolysin titer, rosette forming cells, phagocytic activity for immune response, lymphocyte transformation, and productivity of Interleukin-2 were measured. Results : Body weight decreasing was significantly inhibited as compared with control group in both the Dangkwiyughwangtang and Okbyoungpoongsangamibang groups. Delayed type of hypersensitivity was significantly increased as compared with control group in both groups Hemagglutinin titer was significantly increased as compared with control group in both groups. Hemolysin titer was significantly increased as compared with control group in the Okbyoungpoongsangamibang group. Rosette forming cells were significantly increased as compared with control group in both groups. Phagocytic activity for immune response was slightly decreased in the Dangkwiyughwangtang group and slightly increased in the Okbyoungpoongsangamibang group insignificantly as compared with the control group. Lymphocyte transformation was significantly increased as compared with the control group in both the Dangkwiyughwangtang and Okbyoungpoongsangamibang groups. Productivity of Interleukin-2 was significantly increased as compared with the control group in both the Dangkwiyughwangtang and Okbyoungpoongsangamibang groups. Conclusion : Both the Dangkwiyughwangtang and Okbyoungpoongsangamibang groups enhance immunity in mice.

Status and Efficiency of Wastewater Sea Outfalls in Korea

  • This study provided the status and efficiency of the domestic wastewater sea outfalls based on the previous numerical and experimental studies for the analysis of the buoyant discharges from Rosette diffuser in shallow water. The VISJET model and the hybrid model proposed by Kim (2002) can be proper models for the domestic sea outfalls. The experimental results show that the merging height for MBR and MIR depends on the riser diameter and spacing between risers, and the bending characteristics of the buoyant discharges in still ambient water have significant impacts on the dilution. The current wastewater outfall systems in Korea are not effective for the environmental aspect due to the low discharge water depth. The strategies to reduce the contamination near the domestic wastewater outfalls were found to require the sufficient discharge water depth, proper diffuser location considering the tidal currents, enough riser diameter, and sufficient spacing between risers.

인간 배아줄기세포 유래 신경전구세포의 특성 분석 (Human Embryonic Stem Cell-derived Neuroectodermal Spheres Revealing Neural Precursor Cell Properties)

  • 만능성 인간 배아줄기세포로부터 확립된 신경줄기세포 또는 신경전구세포는 퇴행성 신경질환 세포치료제로 이용될 수 있는 다양한 종류의 신경세포로 분화 유도될 수 있다. 하지만, 인간 배아줄기세포로부터 신경세포를 생산하기 위한 기술은 아직 많은 장애를 가지고 있다. 인간 배아줄기세포 유래 신경전구세포에서 특징적으로 나타나는 신경관 유사로제트에 대한 이해는 인간 배아줄기세포 신경 분화의 효율을 높이는데 유용한 정보를 제공할 것으로 사료된다. 일반적으로 신경로제트(neural rosette)는 분화 중인 배아체를 부착 배양함으로써 유도하지만, 이 방법은 시간이 걸리고 복잡하다는 단점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 신경로제트가 부착배양을 하지 않고 부유배양으로 형성될 수 있는지 조사하였다. 우선적으로, 배아체 형성 및 신경분화에 인간 배아줄기세포 클럼프(clump) 크기가 영향을 주는지를 조사하였고, 사방 $500\;{\mu}m$ 크기의 인간 배아줄기세포 클럼프가 신경 분화 유도에 가장 효과적임을 확인하였다. 로제트 형성을 유도하기 위해, 사방 $500\;{\mu}m$ 크기의 인간 배아줄기세포 클럼프를 1주일 동안 EB 배양배지에 부유 배양함으로써 균일한 크기의 배아체를 얻은 후, NES 배양 배지에서 부가적으로 $1{\sim}2$주 동안 계속 부유 배양한 결과, $7{\sim}10$일 사이에 신경관 유사 로제트가 형성됨을 확인하였다. 로제트 형성 세포의 신경전구세포로서 특성은 RT-PCR과 면역형광염색법을 이용한 신경전구세포 특이적 마커(vimentivi, nestin, MSI1, MSI2, Sox1, Tuj1) 발현을 통해 확인하였다. 또한, 성장인자를 제외한 NES 배양 배지에서 신경로제트를 $2{\sim}6$주 동안 지속적으로 배양하면 성숙 신경세포로의 말단 분화가 유도됨을 확인하였다. 신경세포 특이적 마커(Tuj1, MAP2, GABA)와 신경아교 특이적 마커($S100{\beta}$, GFAP)는 $2{\sim}3$주 또는 4주 후에 각각 발현이 유도됨을 확인하였고, 희소 돌기아교 특이적 마커(O1과 CNPase)는 $5{\sim}6$주 후에 발현이 증가함을 확인하였다. 본 연구결과는 신경로제트가 부유 배양시스템에서 성공적으로 형성됨을 보여주고 있으며, 이는 인간 배아줄기세포의 신경 분화를 이해하고, 신경전구세포 유도 과정을 단순화하는데 효과적으로 이용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
