  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the predictions of dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) of Vietnamese Yellow (Vang) purebred and crossbred (Vang with Red Sindhi or Brahman) bulls fed under Vietnamese conditions using two levels of solution (1 and 2) of the large ruminant nutrition system (LRNS) model. Animal information and feed chemical characterization were obtained from five studies. The initial mean body weight (BW) of the animals was 186, with standard deviation ${\pm}33.2$ kg. Animals were fed ad libitum commonly available feedstuffs, including cassava powder, corn grain, Napier grass, rice straw and bran, and minerals and vitamins, for 50 to 80 d. Adequacy of the predictions was assessed with the Model Evaluation System using the root of mean square error of prediction (RMSEP), accuracy (Cb), coefficient of determination ($r^2$), and mean bias (MB). When all treatment means were used, both levels of solution predicted DMI similarly with low precision ($r^2$ of 0.389 and 0.45 for level 1 and 2, respectively) and medium accuracy (Cb of 0.827 and 0.859, respectively). The LRNS clearly over-predicted the intake of one study. When this study was removed from the comparison, the precision and accuracy considerably increased for the level 1 solution. Metabolisable protein was limiting ADG for more than 68% of the treatment averages. Both levels differed regarding precision and accuracy. While level 1 solution had the least MB compared with level 2 (0.058 and 0.159 kg/d, respectively), the precision was greater for level 2 than level 1 (0.89 and 0.70, respectively). The accuracy (Cb) was similar between level 1 and level 2 (p = 0.8997; 0.977 and 0.871, respectively). The RMSEP indicated that both levels were on average under-or over-predicted by about 190 g/d, suggesting that even though the accuracy (Cb) was greater for level 1 compared to level 2, both levels are likely to wrongly predict ADG by the same amount. Our analyses indicated that the level 1 solution can predict DMI reasonably well for this type of animal, but it was not entirely clear if animals consumed at their voluntary intake and/or if the roughness of the diet decreased DMI. A deficit of ruminally-undegradable protein and/or a lack of microbial protein may have limited the performance of these animals. Based on these evaluations, the LRNS level 1 solution may be an alternative to predict animal performance when, under specific circumstances, the fractional degradation rates of the carbohydrate and protein fractions are not known.

  • This study evaluated the effects of high air temperature and waterlogging duration on growth and yield of Kimchi cabbage. Air temperature treatments were applied with ventilation; optimal (set $20^{\circ}C$) and delayed ($30^{\circ}C$) in the greenhouses. The waterlogging treatment levels were implicated 0, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours, respectively. The growth of Kimchi cabbage was significantly affected by waterlogging duration. The head weight decreased by combining severe waterlogging and high air temperature. Net photosynthetic rate under the combination of non-waterlogging and optimal air temperature was $22.6{\mu}mol\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, which was the greatest, while that of 72 hours-waterlogging was rapidly decreased. The percentage of formality with 0, 12, and 24 hours-waterlogging was over 88%, however, those of 72 hours-waterlogging with optimal and delayed ventilation were 64 and 68%, respectively, which were dramatically reduced. The yields were more affected by waterlogging duration than air temperature treatment because of deducting as increased waterlogging periods. These results indicate that waterlogging treatment reduced the yield and quality of Kimchi cabbage, thus it will be feasible to enhance the harvest time when severe waterlogging in the field.

  • Organic compost from the food waste and poultry manure is useful for a soil conditioner and fertilizer. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of the food waste compost(FC) and poultry manure compost(PC) separately on the growth of young radish and the change of soil properties. Applying 3, 6, $9kg/m^2$ of FC and 1, 2, $3kg/m^2$ of PC, the cultivation of young radish was carried out in the crop field. In young radish applied with FC, leaf length was positively increased with the increasing usage of the compost. Number and area of leaves, and weight of leaf and root were peaked at applying rate of $6kg/m^2$. Growth of young radish with FC of $9kg/m^2$ was lowest in the initial period of the cultivation, and it is regarded that the applying rate of $9kg/m^2$ was detrimental to the germination of the young radish. In young radish applied with PC, the growth rate lowest at applying of $2kg/m^2$ than any other applying rate. Soil properties as bulk density and EC were considerably improved according to applying of food-waste and poultry manures compost. It should be considered to be needed additional study about the accurate applying rate and detailed investigation for soil properties.

  • This Experiment was conducted to know effect of cutting times and nitrogen split application rates on shoot and root-related characters of Atractylodes japonica. The cutting time was forced on none, once and twice along with three levels of nitrogen split application, all basic 50 -30 -20% and 40 -30 -30%. The plant height declined with increased cutting time and dry matter weight was increased with nitrogen split application under none and once cutting. Average yield of cutted shoot as edible wild plant was 257kg/10a at once cutting condition, but twice cutting condition was little and unfavorable to use edible wild plant because shoot was coarse. Yield 0 dry rhizome was the highest at once shoot cutting under 50 -30 -20% nitrogen split application by 471kg/10a.Especially, culture of Atractylodes japonka needed once shoot cutting one the 10th-30th of May.

  • To establish appropriate seed production system in Angelica gigas. Germination of seeds with different bolting years and the growth characters of plants originated from these seeds were investigated. Seed weight from 1st year bolting plant was highest. In germinability according to seeds with different bolting years, seeds from 1st year bolting plant were higher than seeds from 2nd, 3rd years bolting one. In growth characters of plants originated from seeds with different bolting years, as the bolting years became late, root growth increased and top growth decreased, therefore T/R ratio decreased.

  • Orostachys japonicus, called Wasong as herbal medicine and a short day plant, should be artificially kept in long daylength to control anthesis of its florets. The study was done to clarify the effect of daylength (10, 13, 16 hours a day) on growth, morphological characters, and flowering. The treatments were done on August 25 and afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. With longer daylength plant height and inflorescence length were increased but number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were decreased. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights were increased with longer daylength from late September while floret dry weight showed reverse result. Florets formed were the greatest in daylength of 10 hours during September but the least during the other period. Anthesis of the florets was observed only in daylength of 10 hours during October and all the plants from the treatment were flowered.

  • A climatic feature, growth condition and incidence phase of disease and pest in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) were surveyed, both the conventional cultivation and culture in the forest located in Jinan. The results were as follows. The forest field was lower $1^{\circ}C$ in the air temperature, lower $1.9^{\circ}C$ in the soil temperature and 11.8% lower in the soil temperature compared with the conventional field. The wind velocity of the forest field was three times slower, but the dew condensation time was 3.3 hours longer than the conventional field. Particularly, the amounts of solar radiation in the forest was remarkably lower, while the rainfall was little lower with no significance. The incidence of disease and pest in the forest field was severe compared with that of the conventional field. Among them, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Cylindrocarpon destructans, and Alternaria panax was severe in the forest field while, Botrytis cinerea was severe in the conventional field. The growth condition of forest field in Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer was 50% worse in general and the root weight was 87.2% less than the 3-year-old ginseng in the conventional field.

  • Shoot parts of a monocarpic and short day plant Orostachys japonicus have been used as a herbal medicine. The study was carried out to examine the effect of transplanting time (May 30, June 30, July 30) of its seedlings on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Two hours night-break treatment at midnight was done since Aug. 25 when samples were taken afterward every 4 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height and inflorescence length became longer with delayed transplanting time. Number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were more and thicker when transplanted on June 30 than two other treatments. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed nearly the same result to the number of leaves although floret dry weight were increased as transplanting time was delayed. Although florets were most formed when transplanted on June 30, they were not flowered because of the night-break treatment, meaning that the transplanting time had little effect on its growth and anthesis of the florets.

  • Plant growth should be affected by mulching method. The study was done to examine the effect of different mulching methods on growth and yield of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. The experiment was done by six different mulching methods; no mulching, rice straw, transparent polyethylene (PE), black PE, two combined treatments of rice hull and transparent PE or black PE. Green shoot and related characters, growth and yield of early and late stages were measured on May 8, June 8 and October 26, respectively. Green shoot fresh weight was the highest in transparent PE mulching, while number of leaves, shoot and stem lengths were the greatest in rice straw mulching of the methods. In its early stage, rice straw mulching had the fewest number of leaves, roots, stems, the smallest width of leaves, and the least fresh weights of shoots and rhizomes. Combined mulching of black PE and rice hull showed the highest values in root-related characters; number of roots, fresh weights of rhizomes and roots. In its late stage, the treatment effects shown in the early stage disappeared owing to high temperature of mid-summer so that there was no significant difference between the mulching treatments. Yield per unit area and marketable yield were the highest in rice straw mulching, and combined mulching of black PE and rice hull.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the physical properties of a novel resin-based endodontic sealer, Any-Seal, in comparison with AH Plus Jet. Materials and Methods: Flow, radiopacity and compressive strength were examined according to ISO 6876/2001. For flow test, 0.05 mL of sealer was placed between glass plate and 100 g weight were applied. Ten minutes after mixing the sealers, the load was removed and the diameters of the compressed sealer discs were measured. For radiopacity, 10 mm diameter and 1 mm thickness sample were fabricated and took radiograph with an aluminum step-wedge and analyzed using imaging program. For compressive strength test, $4mm{\times}6mm$ cylindrical specimen was fabricated and tested after 24 hours and 1 week using Universal testing machine. Results: Both tested sealers were consistent with ISO 6876/2001 in the flow and radiopacity test. The flow values of both sealers were not significantly different (P > 0.05). AH Plus Jet had significantly higher radiopacity (P < 0.05). AH Plus Jet showed higher compressive strength at both time intervals (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Any-Seal showed low compressive strength until after 1 week, so its physical and biological aspect should be evaluated more before clinical use.
