  • About 200 rice varieties for irrigated and rainfed lowland ecosystems were released in the Philippines, which were bred for improving yield under favorable conditions. Root plasticity plays key roles in maintaining crop productivity under abiotic stressed conditions. We hypothesized that some of these varieties possess root plasticity traits in response to water stressed conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the root system development and dry matter production of 14 randomly selected rice varieties (6 irrigated lowland and 9 rainfed varieties) under progressive drought (PDR) and soil moisture fluctuations (SMF) stress conditions. Two experiments were done in rootbox and line source sprinkler systems (LSS). Each of the varieties was subjected to well-watered (WW), PDR and SMF conditions during vegetative stage in rootbox system while the same genotypes were subjected to different intensities of drought stress under LSS. Under rootbox system, PDR and SMF significantly reduced shoot dry matter production in all varieties relative to their WW controls. Among varieties, NSIC Rc238 (irrigated lowland) showed the least reduction in shoot dry weight (SDW) in both PDR (by 11.8%) and SMF (by 26.9%) conditions. Less reductions in SDW of NSICRc238 were partially attributed to the promotion of L-type lateral roots, thus increasing total lateral root length by 24.2% and 30.7% under PDR and SMF, respectively. In LSS, SDW of NSIC Rc238 under mild drought stress (16-21% soil moisture content (SMC) had 31.8% reduction relative to its WW control (${\geq}22%SMC$) and had lower sensitivity drought index. Compared with the IR64 susceptible check and NSIC Rc9 tolerant check, NSIC Rc238 had higher SDW by 90.8% and 38.6%, respectively. Furthermore, no rainfed lowland varieties included in the experiment performed well under different water stress treatments. The results implied that some other irrigated lowland rice varieties may also possess drought dehydration avoidance root plasticity traits under water-stressed growing environments.

  • Statement of problem : The various kinds of properties of post and core may affect the stress distribution to the root of endodontically treated teeth Purpose: To evaluate the influence of various kinds of properties of post and core to the stress distribution to the root of endodontically treated teeth. Material and methods: Mandibular first premolar, prepared by general shape of post and core with gold crown, was used to two dimensional axisymmetric modeling for finite element analysis. Then property values of 8 different kinds of post and core was substituted for each. Finally, stress distribution shown areas around the root of post and core was analysed after applying 50N of vortical and oblique load. Results: 1. Stress value of oblique load was much higher than the maximum stress value of vertical load. 2. Under oblique load, very concentrated stress was located on post periapical area and variations in stress were very severe. Contrary to this, stress distribution was relatively uniform in vertical load. 3. Post materials with higher elastic modulus showed relatively more apically focused stress, and post materials with lower elastic modulus showed stress focused on cervical area on the axial wall of post. 4. Stress change according to the properties of core was shown only in the cervical area of post and below core as the higher elastic modulus, then increased in stress. 5. Post and core with medium value of elastic modulus showed relatively uniform stress distribution. Conclusions: Post materials with higher elastic modulus showed relatively more apically focused stress, and post materials with lower elastic modulus showed stress focused on cervical area on the axial wall of post. Stress change according to the properties of core was shown only in the cervical area of post and below core.

  • This paper investigates the distribution of stress and its behavior at the Root Toe in fillet welding joint. Furthermore, the stress components and principal stresses in the fillet welds are calculated by the finite element method. The distribution of stresses obtained numerically by means of the finite element method is also compared with the experimental results of two dimensional photoelasticity. A Cover plate type and Center block type of fillet welds are used as models for the numerical calculations covering the variations of 2 W/M(thickness of main plate/thickness of cover plate)=1 through 2W/M=4. The results obtained in these studies are summarized as follows; 1) When W2/M values become small, the stress concentration factors of the Root are larger than of the Toe in a C-type. Its critical value is 2W/M=3.00. However, no critical value exists in a T-type. 2) For 2W/M Values being avove 3.5 in a C-type and above 4.0 in a T-type, $K_R$ and $K_{\tau}$ become 1. 3) According to the differences of 2W/M values, the differences in stress become increasing in the Root but become decreasing in the Toe. These differences, however, disappear as the free boundary surface is approached. 4) The stress concentration factors of both the Root and Toe obtained by means of the finite element method have somewhat lower values than obtained by the photoelasiticity. But their principal stress directions coincide in either method. 5) It proves beneficial to employ the finite element method for two-dimensional plane stress analysis in front fillet welding joint.

  • For abnormal weather disaster and building constructions, the shading stress could occur in crops more often. Those shading stress can effect on rice growth characters. Therefore, we investigated the shading effect on rice growth characters. Shading treatments were treated using shading screen as 35, 55, 75 and 100%. To check the shading effect on rooting after transplanting, shading stress treated after transplanting for 20 days as 35, 55 and 75%, And 35, 55, 75 and 100% of shading were treated 60 days after transplanting to check the growth characters. After transplanting, the shading stress effected on leaf and root growth. At 19 days after transplanting, leaf number reduced by shading stress. In 35, 55 and 75% shading stress, the leaf number reduced as 0.38, 0.45 and 0.9 respectively compared to control treatment. And root length was also reduced as 0.39, 0.6 and 1.93 cm respectively compared to control treatment. The plant height was slightly increased in 35 and 55% and reduced in 100%. Leaf growth speed per day was reduced as 0.0167 according to shading stress. And root growth speed also reduced as 0.0426 according to shading stress. The shading stress during vegetative stage effected on plant height and tiller number. In 35, 55 and 75% of shading stress, the plant height was slightly increased but it was reduced in 100%. Tiller number was significantly reduced by shading stress. According to 10% of shading stress, about 7% of the tiller number was reduced. However, leaf color did not change by the shading stress. The leaf area in 2nd to 4nd leaf from new leaf reduced as 297 and 1044 in 75 and 100% of shading stress and increased as 70 and 99 in 35 and 55%. These leaf area change was affected by both the length and width of the leaf.

  • Aluminum (Al) is one of the major factors adversely affects crop growth and productivity in acidic soils. In this study, the effect of Al on plants in soil was investigated by comparing the protein expression profiles of alfalfa roots exposed to Al stress treatment. Two-week-old alfalfa seedlings were exposed to Al stress treatment at pH 4.0. Total protein was extracted from alfalfa root tissue and analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis combined with MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry. A total of 45 proteins differentially expressed in Al stress-treated alfalfa root tissues were identified, of which 28 were up-regulated and 17 were down-regulated. Of the differentially expressed proteins, 7 representative proteins were further confirmed for transcript accumulation by RT-PCR analysis. The identified proteins were involved in several functional categories including disease/defense (24%), energy (22%), protein destination (9%), metabolism (7%), transcription (5%), secondary metabolism (4%), and ambiguous classification (29%). The identification of key candidate genes induced by Al in alfalfa roots will be useful to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of Al stress tolerance in alfalfa plants.

  • Effects of soil moisture on growth of Panax ginseng, of various factors on soil moisture, and of moisture on nutrition, quality, physiological disorder, diseases and insect damage were reviewed. Optimum soil moisture was 32% of field capacity with sand during seed dehiscence, and 55-65% for plant growth in the fields. Optimum soil moisture content for growth was higher for aerial part than for root and higher for width than for length. Soil factors for high yield in ginseng fields appeared to be organic matter, silt, clay, agreggation, and porosity that contributed more to water holding capacity than rain fall did, and to drainage. Most practices for field preparation aimed to control soil moisture rather than nutrients and pathogens. Light intensity was a primary factor affecting soil moisture content through evaporation. Straw mulching was best for the increase of soil moisture especially in rear side of bed. Translocation to aerial part was inhibited by water stress in order of Mg, p, Ca, N an Mn while accelerated in order of Fe, Zn and K. Most physiological disorders(leaf yellowing, early leaf fall, papery leaf spot, root reddening, root scab, root cracking, root dormancy) and quality factors were mainly related to water stress. Most critical diseases were due to stress, excess and variation of soil water, and heavy rain fall. The role of water should be studied in multidiciplinary, especially in physiology and pathology.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution developed in the supporting structures by mandibular distal extension removable partial dentures with 2 different direct retainer designs and with or without indirect retainer and abutment splinting. The examined direct retainers on the second bicuspid abutment tooth were Akers clasp and RPA clasp, the indirect retainer was located on the mesial fossa of the first bicuspid, and the first and second bicuspid were splinted in case of tooth splinting. Total 8 cases were compared and analyzed with 3-dimensional finite element method. 150N were applied vertically on the artificial teeth of the removable partial denture, and then stress distribution patterns were analyzed and compared. The results were as follows : 1. The forces transmitted to the abutment tooth were primarily from the occlusal rests. 2. The abutment tooth was displaced distally when the force was applied. The compressive stress was observed at the distal root surface of the abutment tooth and the tensile stress, at the mesial root surface. 3. The denture base was displaced posteriorly and inferiorly when the force was applied. At the more distal portion of the denture base, the greater displacement was observed. And the anterior portion of the major connector was displaced superiorly. 4. The occlusal rest placed on the distal part of the abutment tooth tended to tip the tooth more posteriorly than did one on the mesial part of that tooth. 5. Severe superior displacement was observed at the anterior portion of the major connector in case of removable partial dentures without indirect retainer. 6. In case of tooth-splinting, the stress was distributed through all the root surface of both abuments. In case of no tooth-splinting, the stress was concentrated on the distal root surface of the primary abutment.

  • Three Echinochloa species inhabit various crop fields with different soil moisture conditions. Therefore, a growthpouch test was conducted to investigate adaptive diversity of six Echinochloa species, three from Korea and three from USA, toosmotic stress by assessing shoot and root growths. Echinochloa crus-galli var. praticola showed the greatest tolerance to osmoticstress in both root ($GR_{50}=1316.3g\;PEG\;L^{-1}$) and shoot ($GR_{50}=212.2g\;PEG\;L^{-1}$) growths, while Korean E. oryzicola was mostsensitive to osmotic stress in both root ($GR_{50}=116g\;PEG\;L^{-1}$) and shoot ($GR_{50}=126.2g\;PEG\;L^{-1}$) growths. Root to shoot (R/S) ratioof Echinochloa crus-galli var. praticola increased with increasing osmotic stress, while that of Korean E. oryzicola decreased, suggestingthat R/S ratio is closely related to osmotic stress tolerance in Echinochloa species. Our results clearly demonstrate that E. crus-galli var.praticola maintains high R/S ratio even under high osmotic stress, which enables this species to well adapt to dry upland condition. Incontrast, while E. oryzicola fails to maintain sufficiently high R/S ratio, resulting in poor adaptability to dry upland condition.

  • PURPOSE. The study aims to investigate the influence of the ferrule effect and types of posts on the stress distribution in three morphological types of the maxillary central incisor. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Nine models were created for 3 maxillary central incisor morphology types: "Fat" type - crown 12.5 mm, root 13 mm, and buccolingual cervical diameter 7.5 mm, "Medium" type - crown 11 mm, root 14 mm, and buccolingual cervical diameter 6.5 mm, and "Slim" type - crown 9.5 mm, root 15 mm, and buccolingual cervical diameter 5.5 mm. Each model received an anatomical castable post-and-core or glass-fiber post with resin composite core and three ferrule heights (nonexistent, 1 mm, and 2 mm). Then, a load of 14 N was applied at the cingulum with a 45° slope to the long axis of the tooth. The Maximum Principal Stress and the Minimum Principal Stress were calculated in the root dentin, crown, and core. RESULTS. Higher tensile and compression stress values were observed in root dentin using the metallic post compared to the fiber post, being higher in the slim type maxillary central incisor than in the medium and fat types. Concerning the three anatomical types of maxillary central incisors, the slim type without ferrule height in mm presented the highest tensile stress in the dentin, for both types of metal and fiber posts. CONCLUSION. Post system and tooth morphology were able to modify the biomechanical response of restored endodontically-treated incisors, showing the importance of personalized dental treatment for each case.
