To investigate the effects of ozonated water concentration and soaking time on adventitious root formation of willow, we studied the efficiency of root cuttings in the revegetation technology of biological engineering of willows. The ozonated water concentrations were used for 5 minutes and 2 hours at 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 ppm by soaking method and then the shoot characteristics were observed. The number and length of adventitious roots were determined. The results indicated that 20 ppm of ozonated water for 2 hours and 1 ppm of ozonated water for 5 minutes resulted in leaves turned wither away and no adventitious root production. Considering the appearance, number and length of the adventitious root, soaking willow cuttings into the ozonated water with dissolved ozone concentration, 5 ppm for 2 hours and 10-15 ppm for 5 minutes were suitable for generating adventitious roots.
Ditylenchus destructor isolated from diseased ginseng roots was cultured on ginseng calli, fungal mycelium (Fusarium solani), carrot discs and radish sprouts. Effects of temperature, organic material and flooding on the nematode population changes were examined. D. destructor multiplied readily on the culture media except radish sprout medium, and was cultured best on the fungal culture at 2$0^{\circ}C$. Feeding of the fungal hypha and radish root hairs, molting and mating in the fungal culture medium were observed. Addition of organic materials (perilla, sesame, soybean and ginseng leaves) in soil significantly increased Aphelenchus avenae and saprophytic nematode populations, while D. destructor populations changed little and the nematode population growths were limited by the organic amendments (except sesame leaves). The nematode populations in soil including D. destructor were decreased by flooding. The results indicate that D. destructor may survive but not multiply readily in soil without host plants and that it can be effectively controlled by flooding.
Cirsium japonicum is a herbaceous perennial plant grown worldwide, which has been used as a folklore medicine due to its anti-inflammatory properties. A few studies have reported its functional properties, but analytical methods that more confidently and reproductively analyze the flavonoids are required. To establish analytical methods for the detection of flavones in Cirsium japonicum, the potential of HPLC and LC/MS were investigated. For this, the plants were separated into 4 parts; the root, stem, leaves, and flowers. The flavones in each part of the dried materials were analyzed by HPLC. Identification of flavones was performed by LC/MS. The leaves and flowers of Cirsium japonicum gave the optimum peaks, which were not detected by HPLC in the other parts of plants. Using LC/MS, three kinds of flavones were tentatively identified from the leaves, which were thought to be luteolin (5,7,3',4'-tetrahydroxy-flavone), apigenin (4',5,7-trihy-droxyflavone), and hispidulin (4',5,7-trihydroxy-6-methoxyflavone). Two flavones were detected from the flowers, which were been assumed to be apigenin and luteolin.
This study was aimed to observe the effects of municipal sewage sludge as a organic fertilizer on the growth and KDICical omposition of Altari radish (Raphanus sativus). The accumulation rate of heavy metals of the sludge in the radish was also observed. Municipal sewage sludge of Taejon City was applied to the soil of Pai-Chai University Farm to make 6 gradients of sludge contents in the soil. Root weight of Altari radish was affected significantly by N and P contents in the soil. The longest leaves and roots were produced in the control group, in which urea was applied as nitrogen source to the soil. Even though any other sludge-applied groups produced shorter leaves and roots than the control group, the length of the leaves and roots and the weight of the whole plant of the radish tended to increase with the increase of the sludge application. Contents of N, K, Ca and Mg in the radish were not significantly different among those in 6 experimental groups, but P contents in leaves varied among the 6 groups. Zn content of spring Altari radish treated with 200% sludge was 57.6 mg/kg. It is the highest contents among 6 experimental groups. Contents of Zn, Mn and Cd were higher in leaves than in roots, but less than those in market vegetables. From the above results, it is concluded that municipal sewage sludge can be applied as organic fertilizer to the growth of Altari radish. But this sludge could not be applied under our current regulations, which must be reviewed at intra-governmental leavels.
This study developed gasiogapidduk to increase the functional value and flavor of traditional Baiksulgi by adding gasiogapi powder. Powdered nonglutinous rice was mixed with powdered leaves (1%, 2%, 3%), powdered stems roots (1%, 3%, 5%), and powdered freeze-dried root extracts (5%, 10%, 15%) of Acanthopanax senticosus, known as the second ginseng, in order to find the combination ratio optimal to the senses. Sensory evaluation and texture characteristic evaluation of gasiogapidduk were used to develop a functional rice cake appealing to the largest number of people. Sensory evaluation consisted of evaluating color, smell, taste and texture, preference quality which reflects overall appeal. Texture characteristics were evalauated on hardness, adhesiveness, cohesiveness, springiness and gumminess. As a result, AE5 mixed with 5% powdered freeze-dried Acanthopanax senticosus extract proved to be the most desirable in both sensory evaluation and texture characteristics.
In this study, the bactericidal activity of each extract from Sawa-wasabi (Wasabia japonica) root, stem and leaf against the fish pathogenic bacteria were examined. The main component related to bactericidal activity in Sawa-wasabi was well known to AlT. The Sawa-wasabi roots showed the highest AIT amount with 1.18 mg/g. Stems was 0.41 and leaves was 0.38 mg/g. All of them showed bactericidal activity against 2 strains of Vibrio hollisae, V. anguillarum, and 2 strains of Edwardsiella tarda, but weak effect against Staphylococcus capitis. The Sawawasabi leaves showed the strongest bactericidal activity with minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of 156.3mg of dry weight/mL against 2 strains of V. hollisae, V. anguillarum and 2 strains of E. tarda. The roots and stems showed a little weak bactericidal activities with 312-1,250mg of dry weight/mL against them. These results suggest that certain components besides AIT in Sawa-wasabi are affective in killing fish pathogenic bacteria.
1. To know the site of saponin synthesis in this plant, 4-years old Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer was administered with 1, 2-l4C-acetate (Na salt, 10 ucilplant) by stem injection and was continued to grow for 3 weeks and the distribution of the radioactivity in leaf, stem and root part was identified. The percentage of radioactivity recovered was about 3.99%. 2. The sliced roots or leaf discs (2g) were bathed in the reaction mixture containing sugar, ATP, NADPH, and the distribution of the radioactivity of the fractions (sugar, saponin, sapogenin) was identified. 3. It seemed that major synthesized saponins in roots and leaves are dial and triol-type, respectively. Although both types of saponins are synthesized in roots, the main saponins seemed to be dial saponins and a significant portion of triol saponins are supplied from leaves through stem.

The root of Aralia continentalis Kitagawa(Araliaceae) have been used as an analgesic and fever remedy, and for treatment of rheumatism in Chinese medicine, whereas the young leaves are used for salad. An antioxidant activity of the young leaves of A continentalis was determined by measuring lipid peroxide produced when a mouse liver homogenate was exposed to the air at 37$^{\circ}C$, using 2-thiobarbituric acid(TBA) and by evaluation the radical scavenging activity on 1,l-diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. Bioassay guided fractionation of MeOH extract isolated six flavonoid compounds as active components from EtOAc fraction. Adenosine and two saponins were isolated from the weak active BuOH fraction. The antioxidant effect by DPPH radical scavenging activity showed that quercetin was the most active among these compounds. Hyperoside and kaempferol were also active, while 6"-O-acetyl astragalin, astragalin, trifolin, adenosine, oleanolic acid 28-O-glucosyl ester and salsoloside C methyl ester were almost inactive. All the compounds were identified by spectroscopic methods.
The relationship between source leaf position and photo-assimilate translocation and distribution was characterized for tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) grown in the greenhouse. Three different positions of source leaf on the stem (first node above or below the first fruit cluster and $5^{th}$ node above the first fruit cluster) were tested for their influence on $^{14}CO_2$ assimilation and transfer to different parts of the plant. The leaves at the $5^{th}$ node above the first fruit cluster transferred the highest (57%) proportion of $C^{14}$ to other plant parts, followed by leaves home on the first node below the first fruit cluster (50%), and the first node above the first fruit cluster (39%). In all treatments, fruits served as the strongest sink for $C^{14}$, followed by stem, leaf, and root tissues. The leaf home on the $5^{th}$ node above the first fruit cluster transferred the largest amount of $C^{14}$ to the second fruit cluster.

This study was carried out to provide primary data set for cleaning of contamination site. By having hydroponic culture on Salix alba and S. caprea seedling treated with Ni solution, the result of Ni accumulation came out as followings : In a treatment of Ni to the Salix alba and S. caprea, Ni accumulation increased in its root, leaves, and stem, as Ni concentration became higher until $10.0{\mu}mol$. But in a $100.0{\mu}mol$ treatment, the seedlings died after 4 weeks. Ni accumulation in the Salix alba and S. caprea was the highest in its roots, second-highest in leaves, and the lowest in stems. In the case of $10.0{\mu}mol$ treatment of Ni solution, Ni accumulation in roots were above 500.0mg/L, and leaves were above 20.0mg/L. But it was lower than 13.0mg/L in stems. Ni accumulation in the plant increased more when nutrient solution containing Ni was weekly changed than just refilling the same amount of nutrient solution that evaporated Ni accumulation in Salix alba was higher than S. caprea when the nutrient solution had been refilled only.
