  • Micro-screws can be defined by their outer diameter of generally less than 1 mm. They are manufactured by head forging and thread rolling processes. In this study, the thread rolling process was numerically analyzed for a micro-screw with a diameter and pitch of 0.8 and 0.2 mm, respectively. Through finite element (FE) analysis, the effects of two design parameters (die gap and chamfer height) on the dimensional accuracy were investigated. Three combinations of chamfer heights were chosen first and the corresponding die gap candidates selected by geometric calculation. FE analyses were performed for each combination and their results indicated that the concave chamfer height should be less than 0.3 mm, while a 10 ?m difference in the die gap might cause degeneration in dimensional accuracy. These results conclude that ultra-high accuracy is required in die fabrication and assemblies to ensure dimensional accuracy in micro-screw manufacturing.

  • In this paper, a manufacturing process for a ball bearing outer race is studied by experiments and predictions, which is composed of four hot forging stages and the final hot or warm profile ring rolling stage. An analysis model and some assumption to simulate the profile ring rolling process is introduced. The entire process including the forging stages and ring rolling stage is simulated using a rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method and the predictions are compared with the experiments in terms of major dimensions, showing that they are quantitatively very close to each other.

  • The inhomogeneous texture through the thickness direction can be developed during hot rolling deformation in aluminum alloy. In this study, the inhomogeneous texture evolution through the thickness direction during hot rolling deformation in Al-5 wt%Mg alloy produced by a new strip casting technology was measured experimentally. Macrotexture measurement was conducted using X-ray diffractometer. A finite element analysis with ABAQUS/StandardTM and rate sensitive polycrystal model were used to predict the evolution of hot rolling texture. The experimental results of Al-5 wt%Mg alloy were compared with calculated results. The shear texture components tend to be increased at the surface region of the hot-rolled specimen. It is found that triclinic sample symmetry is more accurate assumption for texture analysis and simulation in the surface region of hot-rolled aluminum alloy.

  • Interstitial free (IF) steel sheets were cold rolled by the cross-roll rolling mill in which the roll axes are tilted by ${\pm}7.5^{\circ}$ away from the transverse direction of the rolled sample. After cross-roll rolling of IF steel sheets, the cold rolling and the recrystallization textures were distinguished from those observed after rolling in a normal rolling mill. The three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) simulation revealed that the operation of a large shear strain ${\varepsilon}_{23}$ during cross-roll rolling leads to the formation of a distinct cold rolling texture. During recrystallization annealing, a pronounced change in texture components was not observed, which is attributed to the lack of either selective growth or oriented nucleation during the recrystallization process. Cold cross-roll rolling led to the formation of finer recrystallized grains in IF steel sheets.

  • Parallel Approaches using Cray T3E which is NIPP (Massively Parallel Processors) machine are presented for the efficient computation of the finite element analysis of 3-D shape rolling processes. D omain decomposition method coupled with parallel linear equation solver is used. Domain decomposition is applied for obtaining element tangent stifffiess matrices and residual vectors. Direct and iterative parallel algorithms are used for solving the linear equations. Direct algorithm is_parallel version of direct banded matrix solver. For iterative algorithms, the well-known preconditioned conjugate gradient solver with Jacobi preconditioner is also employed. Moreover a new effective iterative scheme with block inverse matrix preconditioner, which is named by present authors, is presented and its results are compared with the one using Jacobi preconditioner. PVM and MPI are used for message passing and synchronization between processors. The performance and efficiency of each algorithm is discussed and comparisons are made among different algorithms.

  • Two-dimensional elastic contact problems, including normal, tangential, and rolling contacts, are treated with the finite element method in this study. Stress boundary conditions and kinematic conditions are transformed into multiple point constraints for nodal displacements in the finite element method. Upon imposing these constraints into the finite element system equations, the calculated nodal stresses and nodal displacements satisfy stress and displacement contact conditions exactly. Frictional and frictionless contacts between elastically identical as well as elastically dissimilar materials are treated in this study. The contact lengths, sizes of slip and stick regions, the normal and the shear stresses can be found.

  • A new automatic diagnostic system for predicting multiple defects in rolling element bearings is developed by taking probbability into account. A database is constructed from the frequency characteristics of tested bearings with various types of defects. The proposed algorithms for the automatic diagnosis of bearing defects are shown to be satisfactory through the experiments. This method can be effectively used for quality control of the rolling bearing in plants.

  • Tracings streamlines in global coordinate, especially with finite element mesh, requires much computation due to C0 continuity of velocity field. In this study, a new approach is presented for the determination of streamlines from velocity field obtained by FE analysis. It is shown that amount of calculation can be drastically reduced and boundary of element can be easily treated. The approach is applied to the problem of free surface of deforming workpieces in shape rolling.
