Low Frequency Roll Motion of a Semi-Submersible Moored in Irregular Waves

  • A semi-submersible drilling rig is regarded as one of the typical offshore structures operated in the field with moderate environments such as the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, and West Africa. Its typical roll and pitch natural periods are around 30 seconds, which avoids prevailing regions of the wave energy spectrum, and their responses in waves are quite acceptable for common operation conditions. But large roll and pitch motions can be induced by wave difference frequency energy spectrum if the metacentric heights of a semi-submersible decrease to small values in some loading conditions, and it is because the roll and pitch natural periods increase and approach to the region where the spectral density of the low frequency wave drift moment has significant value. This paper describes the low frequency roll motion of a semi-submersible that are excited by the wave 2nd order difference frequency energy by a series of model experiments. From the model tests with several different initial metacentric heights (GM), it was observed that a semi-submersible can experience large roll motion due to the wave group spectrum.

  • Up to now, it has been common to treat the maneuvering motion of a ship as a 3-degree-freedom motion i.e. surge, sway and yaw on the sea surface, for the simplicity and mathematical calculation, and it is quite acceptable in the practical point of view. Meanwhile, considering the maneuverability of a ship under the special conditions such as in irregular waves, in wind or at high speed with small GM value, it is required that roll effect must be considered in the equation of ship motion. In this paper the author tried to build up the 4-degree-freedom motion equation by adding roll. And then, applying the M.M.G.'s mathematical model and with captive model test results the roll-coupled hydrodynamic derivatives were found. With these the author could make some simulating program for turning and zig-zag steering. Through the computer simulations, the effect of roll to the ship maneuver became clear. The effect of the wind force to the maneuverability was also found. Followings are such items that was found. 1) When roll is coupled in the maneuvering motion, the directional stability becomes worse and the turning diameter becomes smaller as roll becomes smaller as roll becomes larger. 2) When maneuver a ship in the wind, the roll becomes severe and the directional stability becomes worse. 3) When a ship turns to the starboard side, the wind blowing from 90 degree direction to starboard causes the largest roll and the largest turning diameter, and the wind from other direction doesn't change the turning diameter. 4) When a ship is travelling with a constant speed with rudder amidship, if steady wind blows from one direction, the ship turns toward that wind. This phenomenon is observed in the actual seaways.

Motion Sensor를 이용한 MBES 오측자료 제거 연구 (A Study on MBES Error Data Removing using Motion Sensor)

  • 수심측량 자료는 선박의 항행안전을 위한 필수자료이며 해양의 합리적 이용과 보전을 위한 기초자료이다. 최근 IT기술과 측위장비(GPS와 INS), 수심관측 장비(Echo Sounder)의 발달로 멀티빔(Multi Beam Echo Sounder) 방식을 이용하여 정밀한 해저지형 자료DB를 구축하고 있다. MBES 자료에는 다양한 요인으로 인하여 오차를 포함하고 있으며, 일부 자료에서 지형이 지그재그한 물결현상을 발생하는 오차들이 발생한다. 물결무늬를 발생시키는 오차는 MBES 자료 처리결과의 정확도를 저해하는 요인이며, 발생 원인을 파악하여 이러한 오측자료 제거를 통하여 정확도를 향상시키고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 MBES 자료를 이용하여 물결 무늬 현상이 발생하는 자료에 대한 Motion sensor 값을 분석하여 오측자료의 원인을 파악하였다 분석결과, 물결무늬 현상은 Roll의 표준편차와 상관관계를 갖으며, 이러한 물결무늬 오측자료는 급격한 Roll 값의 변화로 인하여 Swath 자료와 Roll 값의 불일치 결과로 나타났다. 이를 근거로 Swath 자료의 기울기와 Roll 값의 비교하여 오측자료를 선별하여 제거하였다 오측자료를 제거한 결과. Motion sensor의 Roll 값의 표준연차 등을 이용하여 MBES 자료의 품질을 판단하고, 불일치 자료를 최소화하는 추가적인 오차 요인을 계산할 수 있을 것이라 예상된다 또한, 해황조건이 고르지 못한 상황 및 Sensor의 움직임이 크게 일어나는 소형 선박 등에 척용을 하면 수심측량 정확도 개선에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

수중로봇의 롤 운동제어를 위한 모델 베이스 제어에 관한연구 (Study on Model Based Control for the Roll Motion of an Underwater Robot)

  • 병렬기구를 이용하여 항만공사를 위한 수중로봇을 개발하였다. 수중으로 큰 피복석을 옮기기 위해 수중로봇은 크레인에 의해 권양된다. 수중로봇의 요오와 피치운동은 유압 실린더에 의해 제어되지만 롤 운동은 제어되지 않는다. 롤 운동을 위해 로봇 양쪽에 프로펠러가 장착되어 제어된다. 본 논문은 수중로봇의 롤 운동제어에 관한 것이다. 롤 운동 각도를 측정하기 위해 자이로 센서가 사용되었다. 로봇의 롤 운동을 2차 비선형 시스템으로 나타내고 반복 리스트 스퀘어 방법과 적응인식 방법으로 동적 모델을 찾았다. 동적 모델로 외란을 보상하기 위한 제어입력을 계산하고 PD 제어, 반복 리스트 스퀘어 모델 베이스 제어, 적응 모델 베이스 제어를 롤 운동제어에 적용했다. 수중로봇의 시스템을 설명하고 제안한 제어기의 시뮬레이션과 실험결과를 보인다.

  • This paper describes dynamics analysis of a small training boat and a new type of ship's autopilot not only to keep her course but also to reduce her roll motion. Firstly, statistical analysis through multi-variate auto regressive model is carried out using the real data collected from the sea trial on an actual small training boat Sazanami after the navigational system of the boat was upgraded. It is shown that the roll motion is strongly influenced by the rudder motion and it is suggested that there is a possibility of reducing the roll motion by controlling the rudder order properly. Based on this observation, a new type of ship's autopilot that takes the roll motion into account is designed using the muti-variate modern control theory. Lastly, digital simulations by white noise are carried out in order to evaluate the proposed system and a typical result is demonstrated. As results of simulations, the proposed autopilot had good performance compared with the original data.

지프차량의 전복성향 해석 (Rollover Propensity Analysis of A Jeep Vehicle)

  • Vehicle rollover is an important issue for the traffic safety. Rollover can occur from the driver's action, the vehicle characteristics, or the road condition. This study is about the rollover propensity analysis of a jeep vehicle using the steering and braking maneuver, which is the combined result by the driver and the vehicle. Simple equations of roll motion is used to analyze the roll motion and a special purpose vehicle dynamics program is used to simulate the rollover of the jeep vehicle. From the simulation, an incipient rollover motion of the vehicle was found. However, the more complete rollover propensity analysis would require further investigation using roll dynamic sensitivity study.

  • The SUV has a risk of rollover because of the highness of center of mass. In this paper the roll-behavior of a SUV in turning motion is analyzed. Dynamic model of the vehicle on the slope is developed and simulation is carried out using the software ADAMS/Car. The results show that the relational expression between the ground force acting on the tire and the roll motion is well established. It is also identified that the driving state of the vehicle becomes unstable at the lower or upper position of the slope.

  • In ship operation the consequency of roll motions can seriously degrade the performance of mechanical and personnel effectiveness. So many studies for the roll stabilization control system design have been performed and very good results have been achieved. In many studies, the stabilizing fins are used. Recently rudders, which have been extensively modified, have been used to exclusively to stabilize the roll. This paper examines the two-degree-of-freedom servosystem design technique to synthesize the yaw control system which achieves the course keeping object of the ship and the H$_{\infty}$ control approach to suppress the roll motion, respectively.

  • This paper presents a robust controller design approach for improving vehicle dynamic roll motion performance and guaranteeing the closed-loop system stability in spite of vehicle parameter variations resulting from aging elements, loading patterns, and driving conditions, etc. The designed controller is linear parameter-varying (LPV) in terms of the time-varying parameters; its control objective is to minimise the $H_{\infty}$ performance from the steering input to the roll angle while satisfying the closed-loop pole placement constraint such that the optimal dynamic roll motion performance is achieved and robust stability is guaranteed. The sufficient conditions for designing such a controller are given as a finite number of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Numerical simulation using the three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) yaw-roll vehicle model is presented. It shows that the designed controller can effectively improve the vehicle dynamic roll angle response during J-turn or fishhook maneuver when the vehicle's forward velocity and the roll stiffness are varied significantly.

해상교통특성과 계류중인 선박의 Roll 동요량에 관한 연구 (Study on the Roll Motion of Moored Ships Using Marine Traffic Characteristics)

  • 부두가 항로와 인접한 위치에 건설되었을 경우 계류선박은 항행 선박에 의해 발생되는 항주파의 영향을 받게 된다. 본 연구에서는 Portable 계측시스템을 제작하여 실제 선박의 Roll 동요량을 계측하고, 그 결과를 프로그램 시뮬레이션 결과와 비교하였다. 분석 결과 시뮬레이션 수행에 따른 Roll 동요량은 하역안전성 기준을 만족하는 것으로 분석되었지만, 실제 선박의 계측 결과에서는 기준을 만족하지 못하는 시간대가 분석되었다. 하역안전성 기준을 만족하지 못하는 Roll 동요량은 총 18회 분석되었으며, 이 중 다른 시간대의 영향을 받은 3회를 제외한 15회의 상황 중 11회(73.3%)의 상황이 목포-제주간을 운항하는 총톤수 10,000톤 이상의 여객선이 입항하는 시간대와 일치함을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구 결과는 하역안전성 평가 시 해상교통특성 반영을 제안하는 기초 연구로 활용될 수 있으며, 이는 선박의 하역안전성 평가 결과의 신뢰도를 높일 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
