How Role Overload Affects Physical and Psychological Health of Low-ranking Government Employees at Different Ages: The Mediating Role of Burnout

  • Background: The public now imposes higher demands on the government than in the past, which has created the role overload faced by low-ranking government employees in China. This research investigates the relationship between role overload and health among low-ranking government employees and explores the mediating effects of burnout. Methods: It draws on a survey of 2064 low-ranking government employees by probability proportionate to size sampling in China's Shandong Province. Structural equation modeling (SEM) methods are used to analyze the data. Results: Both role overload and burnout were found to have negative effects on low-ranking government employees' health; however, the associations varied among the three age groups (less than 36, between 36 and 45, and over 45). Those over 45 reported the highest level of both physical and psychological health, while the youngest age group (less than 36) reported the lowest level of health. Role overload has a direct influence on health among government employees over 45 but not among those below 45. Burnout's mediating effects between role overload and health are significant among all age groups, but most significant among the youngest civil servants below 36. Conclusions: The findings evidenced that both role overload and burnout affect low-ranking government employees' self-reported physical and psychological health. In addition, the effect of age differences in coping with role stressors and burnout should be considered.

글로벌 유통업 종사자의 스트레스 및 조직유효성의 결정요인에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Determinants of Distributors' Stress and Organizational Effectiveness in a Global Distribution Industry)

  • 본 연구는 글로벌 유통업 종사자들의 스트레스 및 조직유효성을 결정하는 요인들에 대하여 분석하였다. 본 연구는 유통업 종사자들의 스트레스 및 조직유효성을 결정하는 요인으로서 역할모호성, 역할갈등, 역할과부하, 그리고 마음챙김을 제시하였다. 조직유효성은 직무만족, 조직몰입, 이직의도로 구분하였다. 연구자료는 글로벌 유통업에 종사하는 202명의 유통업자로부터 수집되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 역할갈등 및 역할과부하는 글로벌 유통업 종사자들의 스트레스를 높이는 반면, 역할모호성 및 마음챙김은 그들의 스트레스를 낮추는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 역할모호성은 글로벌 유통업 종사자들의 직무만족 및 조직몰입을 낮추고, 역할갈등 및 역할과부하는 그들의 이직의도를 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 역할과부하는 글로벌 유통업 종사자들의 직무만족 및 조직몰입을 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 마음챙김은 글로벌 유통업 종사자의 직무만족을 높이는 것으로 나타났다.

국외여행인솔자의 역할갈등, 모호성, 과부하와 서비스 제공 수준과의 영향관계 (Relationship among Role Conflict, Ambiguity, Overload and Service Delivery Level of Tour Conductor)

  • 여행서비스 품질, 종사원 만족, 그리고 여행자 만족 등의 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 여행서비스 제공에 있어 국외여행인솔자가 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있음에도 불구하고, 인솔자의 역할, 역할관련 스트레스, 그리고 서비스 제공 수준 등에 대한 연구는 미진한 형편이다. 그래서 이번 연구에서는 역할 관련 스트레스인 역할 갈등, 모호성, 그리고 과부하와 서비스 제공수준에 대한 개념적 정의에 대한 논의를 수행하고, 이들 변수들에 대한 조사를 수행한다. 또한 서비스 제공수준의 영향 요소를 파악하고 역할 갈등 등의 스트레스 요인이 국외여행인솔자의 서비스 제공수준에 미치는 영향 관계를 파악한다. 분석 결과를 보게 되면, 역할 갈등, 역할 모호성, 그리고 역할 과부하 등의 요소들이 국외여행인솔자의 서비스 제공수준에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것을 볼 수 있다. 특히, 서비스 접점과정에서 역할 갈등과 모호성은 응대성과 감정이입에 영향을 미치는 것을 볼 수 있으며, 역할 과부하는 전문성과 외모연출과 영향관계를 갖는 것을 볼 수 있다. 결론적으로 국외여행인솔자의 스트레스를 줄이고 서비스 제공수준을 향상시키기 위해서는 인솔자 개인의 노력뿐만 아니라 조직차원의 정책 등이 필수적인 요소이다.

2차 종합병원 간호사의 업무환경요인과 소진 및 이직의도에 관한 연구 (A Study on Intention to Quit and Job Overload, Role Ambiguity, Burn out among Nurses in General Hospital)

  • Purpose: This study is designed to verify affecting variables to turnover intention of nurses in general hospital. Methods: The data were from the self-reported questionnaire responses of 168 nurses in five general hospitals 300-400 beds in Seoul and Gyungi province and analyzed by frequency and percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Sheffe's test and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The means of turnover intention were $3.14{\pm}0.87$, job overload, $3.54{\pm}0.67$, role ambiguity, $2.87{\pm}0.71$ and burnout, $2.68{\pm}0.72$. A significant correlation was found among turnover intention and job overload (r=.24, p<.001), role ambiguity (r=.30, p<.001), and burn out (r=.58, p<.001). The factors that affect turnover intention from the result of multiple regression by the stepwise selection, were emotional exhaustion, role ambiguity, and diminished personal accomplishment. Conclusion: Based on the results, to reduce turnover intention of nurses, emotional support should be provided and also range of roles be clearly defined. In addition, it is needed to improve the working conditions for nurses to get a sense of accomplishment.

COVID-19 환자를 간호하는 간호사의 피로와 역할과부담이 우울에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Fatigue and Role-Overload on Depression in Nurses Caring for COVID-19 Patients)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 COVID-19 환자를 간호하는 간호사의 우울과 피로, 역할과부담의 수준을 파악하고, 피로와 역할과부담이 우울에 미치는 영향을 규명하는 것이다. COVID-19 환자 치료 지정 4개의 병원에서 COVID-19 환자를 직접 간호하는 142명의 간호사로부터 자기기입식 설문지를 활용하여 자료를 수집하였고, 자료수집 기간은 2020년 9월 8일부터 17일까지였다. 연구대상자의 우울 수준은 14.51±9.54였고, 피로 수준은 3.19±0.64였고, 역할과부담 수준은 3.03±0.64였다. 우울은 피로(r=.40, p<.001), 역할과부담(r=.30, p<.001)과 양의 상관관계가 있었고, 피로는 역할과부담(r=.54, p<.001)과 양의 상관관계가 있었다. 간호사의 우울에 영향을 미치는 요인은 피로(β=.23, p=.014)와 주관적 건강상태(보통, β=.28, p=.001; 건강하지 않음, β=.26, p=.002), 근무기관(대학병원)(β=.18, p=.024)이었고, 모형의 설명력(R2)은 28.1%이었다. 간호사의 우울 수준을 관리하기 위해서는 피로 수준을 낮추기 위한 전략과 함께 간호사의 건강수준 향상 전략이 필요하다.

미국 자립생활센터 실무자가 경험하는 소진과 직무스트레스 관계성 연구 (Relationship between Burnout and Role Stressors Experienced by Professions at Centers for Independent Living in the United States)

  • 본 논문의 목적은 미국 자립생활센터 실무자들이 경험하는 직무스트레스의 정도를 파악하고, 이들의 직무스트레스와 소진간의 관계를 밝히기 위함이다. 온라인조사와 설문지 조사를 통하여 설문에 최종 참여한 자립생활센터 실무자는 총 218명인데 이들이 경험하는 직무스트레스 중 직무갈등(role conflict: RC)점수는 평균 22.48 (SD = 5.80)이며 직무모호성(role ambiguity: RA) 점수는 평균 22.20 (SD = 4.30), 직무과중(role overload: RO)점수는 평균 9.14 (SD = 2.55)로 나타나 다른 휴먼서비스 직군에 비해 평균이상의 직무스트레스를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 자립생활센터 실무자들의 개인적 조직적 특성에 따른 직무스트레스 정도를 ANOVA LSD 사후검정을 통해 분석한 결과, RC지수는 실무자의 나이, 직무내용, 교육정도, 휴먼서비스 근무경력, 주당 근무시간에 따라 점수 차이를 보였고, RA지수는 실무자의 휴먼서비스 근무경력과 주당 근무시간에 따라, RO지수는 휴먼서비스 근무경력에 따라 그룹 간 차이를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 자립생활센터 실무자들이 경험하는 직무스트레스와 소진간의 관계성을 알아보기 위해 회귀분석한 결과, 세 가지 직무스트레스 모두 소진의 예측변수로 나타났다.

판매원의 자기효능감 및 직무과부하가 감정노동에 미치는 영향과 감정의 매개효과 (The Effect of Salesperson's Self Efficacy and Work Overload on Emotional Labor and the Mediating Role of Emotion)

  • This study investigates i) the effect of salesperson's self efficacy and work overload on emotional labor and ii) the mediating role of emotion. A survey questionnaire is developed and implemented on salespersons working in the fashion retail stores of department stores. The measurement scales are composed of emotional labor, self efficacy, work overload and emotion. A total of 112 responses are analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis and a structural equation model with AMOS18.0. The results are as follows. Firstly, self efficacy has direct effect on both deep acting and surface acting of emotional labor without the mediating effect of emotion. Self efficacy has a positive effect on deep acting. Secondly, work overload has a negative effect on emotion. Job emotion has positive effect on deep acting and it has a negative effect on surface acting. Thirdly, emotion has a significant mediating effect between work overload and emotional labor. Finally, implications for personal management and job design in the fashion retail organizations are suggested.

사회적 지지 과부하가 소셜미디어 환경에서의 사회적 소통에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Social Overload on Social Communication in the Social Media Environment)

  • With the rapid growth of the internet, Social Network Services (SNSs) have played an important role. As the use of SNSs increases, users experience a sense of responsibility to respond to other people's messages or requests, and consequently experience an social overload, feeling too much social support for other users. In this study, we examined the effects of social overload on loneliness and SNS discontinuous usage intention. To verify the research model, data were collected from 83 SNS users and analyzed using SmartPLS, a structural equation modeling tool. The results of this study showed that the communal orientation and the degree of use of SNS influenced the social overload, and the social overload had a significant effect on loneliness and SNS discontinuous usage intention. The findings of this study are expected to help understand the social overload and loneliness in the use of SNS, and may also provide a strategic direction for SNS service providers.

사무직 근로자의 역할 관련 스트레스 요인과 대처전략, 스트레스 반응간의 관계 (The Relationships of Role-Conflict and Role-Overload, Coping Strategies, and Stress Response of Clerical Workers)

  • This study was designed to identify the relationships of role-conflict and role-overload, coping strategies, and stress response of clerical workers. The subjects were 115 clerical workers from two company. The instruments were the role-conflict and role-overload scale developed by Lee(1989), coping scale developed by Latack(1986), and the stress response scale developed by Chang(1993). Analysis of data was done by descriptive statistics, Cronbach's $\alpha$, Pearson correlation coefficietnt, ANOVA. The results of this study were summarized as follows ; 1. The average score for the level of stress response was $83.6({\pm}9.1)$. The high risk stress group was 86.1% of the clerical workers, the latent stress group members was 13.9%, and healthy group was 0%. The overall stress level was very high. 2. Considering the coping strategies by sociodemographic factors, the use of control coping strategies showed significant differences by work-time. The use of symptom management coping strategies showed significant differences by sex, age, married status, year of career, pay, and type of work. The organizational coping strategies showed significant differences by year of education and type of work. 3. The clerical workers who had worked below 44 hours per week complained significantly lower stress response(F=4.942, p<.05). 4. Above 65% of all respondents answered that they needed all of organizational level coping strategies. 5. The role-confilct positively related to escape and organizational level coping strategies(r=.562, r=.495, p<.05). The role-overload didn't related to individual level coping strategies, but positively related to organizational level coping strategies(r=.320, p<.05). 6. The control coping strategies and the escape coping strategies positively related to symptom management, organizational level coping strategies(r=.409, r=.324, r=.316, r=.339, p<.05). 7. The relationship between role-related stress and stress response revealed positive correlation(r=.482, r=.431, p<.05), and the relationship between stress response and control, symptom management coping strategies revealed negative cor-relation(r=-.3204, r=-.3146, p<.05). In conclusion, this study revealed that relationship of role related stress, coping strategies, stress response was statistically significant. The result of this study support that coping strategies vary across situation of stress. Based on survey results, future studies should consider coping strategies in specific stress situation and concept of symptom management coping strategy. Also organizational or training interventions could be developed and initiate to help to increase the use of adaptive coping strategies in light of individual and situational differences.

간호사가 지각하는 직무과부하, 상사부하관계의 질 및 정서적 소진이 이직의도에 미치는 영향 - 정서적 소진의 매개효과 검증 - (The Impact of Job Overload, Relationship with Senior on Nurses' Intention to Quit Their Jobs - Mediating Role of Emotional Exhaust -)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate how job overload, relationship with senior perceived by nurses and emotional exhaust related to turnover and explored the mediating role of emotional exhaust in job characteristics-turnover relationship. Method: Participants were 280 nurses from around the greater metropolitan area of Seoul, completed questionnaires. Correlation and Structural Equation Models were employed to investigate the various factors associated with this. Result: Job overload related positively to emotional exhaust and turnover and the quality of relationship with senior related negatively to emotional exhaust but positively to turnover. These findings suggest the important role played by job conditions in preventing nurses' emotional burnout and the intention to quit their jobs. Furthermore, emotional burnout mediated the effects of these job characteristics on nurses' turnover. Conclusion: It is suggested that the benefit of job conditions and emotional burnout should be taken into consideration when developing strategies to improve nurse retention and. social supporting programs for nurses more generally.
