  • This study was conducted in a commercial plug glasshouse in Sacheon to examine the possibility of producing tomato plug seedlings using various growing media containing cellular glass foam (CGF)and carbonized chestnut woodchips (CCW) as medium components. Plug seedlings of 'Seogun' tomato were grown in media containing 50% CCW+50% peatmoss, 33% CGF+67% peatmoss, and 50% peatmoss+50% granular rockwool. A commercial plug medium (Tosilee) was used as the control. All seeds were sown in 200 cell plug trays on November 28, 2001. Seedling growth was measured at 31 days after sowing. Each treatment showed a similar growth result as compared to the control. Plant height, root grade, fresh weight, and air space and bulk density of the medium were significantly greater in the 33% CGF+67% peatmoss treatment than those in the other media. However, growth was slightly suppressed in the 50% CCW+50% peatmoss. pH and EC of the media were the highest in the control treatment, although no toxicity symptoms had been observed. The results suggest that perlite can be replaced with a new material such as CGF in the commercial scale production of plug seedlings of 'Seogun' tomato.

  • This experiments comparisons were conducted to establish the effective sap analytical method including quantitative analysis of nitrate and phosphorous, sap extraction method, extraction rate, macerating time and sampling position. Earl's Favorite muskmelon was sown on February 11th, 1993 and transplanted to rockwool slab when three to fourth true leaf appeared. Non-circulating system was employed in this experiment. Sap testing using a sample provides an immediate analysis of nutritional status of the crop and potential problems can be recognized and corrective measures taken. Some methods were recommended UV-spectroscopy for the analysis of nitrate nitrogen, Vanad molybdenium acid method for phosphorous. Optimal extraction rate of sample to water was determined as one to four and the best result observed at 60seconds in macerating duration. Further trials would be requested about sampling time due to the difference according to the sampling time. Given sampling position was favorable for the sap analysis.

  • The main purpose of these studies were to clarify differences in Cheju - scoria and other solid media on quantity and quality of cherry tomatoes and on shift of component of the nutrient solution, and to use Practically Cheju-scoria as an excellent solid culture medium. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. Among scoria plots, the rates of dry weights, fruits and their sugar-acid ratio were higher in the plot that was drained well with deep flow for one hour once a day. 2. Fresh fruit weights were lighter in rockwool and deep flow technique, but larger in scoria, Hyugashi (artificial gravel, $\Phi$10-12mm) and perlite in moving to higher flower cluster. 3. The results of analysis on microelement among solution components showed decrease of concentrations of P and K in the period of growth and development. 4. Yields and brix of cherry tomato showed a tendency to increase in rockwool and Hyugashi than anothers. 5. The concentration of fertilizer base was increased in general solution culture. Transpiration and absorption were similar in scoria plot and other media. 6. More studies of the Cheju-scoria development is required in order to use it as a solid medium for solution culture.

  • Cucumbers(Cucumis sativus L. CV. SHARP 1) were cultivated by bag culture for 5 months to investigate the effect of substrates on growth, yield, and mineral contents. The substrates used in the experiment were vermiculite + perlite +peatmoss(1:1:1=V:V:V), perlite+peatmoss(1:1=V:V), perlite+carbonized chaff(7:3=V:V), rockwool, sawdust, and chaff+chaff powder under 10 mesh (7:3=V:V). The rate of moisture content was highest at chaff powder under 10 mesh as 42.5% and was lowest at perlite+carbonized chaff as 31%. Plant height, No. of leaves, fresh and dry weight were increased in vermiculite+perlite+peatmoss(1:1:1=V:V:V). Marketable fruits and yield also showed same aspect with growth. All kinds of mineral contents except K in cucumber plants were higher at vermiculite+perlite+peatmoss(1:1:1=V:V:V), but K content was higher at perlite+ carbonized chaff(7:3=V:V) than those other substrates.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the effect of rootstock on growth and early yield of stenting-propagated cut roses (Rosa hybrida Hort.) 'Pink Aurora' and 'Yellow King'. The scions, prepared as single-node cuttings, each with a five-leaflet leaf, were grafted onto cuttings of Rosa indica 'Major', Rosa multiflora 'Chille Wonye No. 1', Rosa multiflora 'K-1', or Rosa multiflora 'Burr' as the rootstock. The rootstock cuttings were removed of all leaves and buds before grafting. The base of scion and the top of rootstock were held together and simultaneously cut at a $45^{\circ}$ angle for ease of grafting. Scion-rootstock unions were stuck in rockwool cubes and placed on a misted glasshouse bench for rooting before being transplanted into a rockwool slabs for cultivation. Rooting was the greatest in the 'Pink Aurora' and 'Yellow King' grafted on the rootstock Rosa indica 'Major'. In 'Pink Aurora', stem length, stem diameter, five-leaflet leaves per stem, and stem fresh weight of the harvested cut flowers were not affected by the rootstock. The greatest total yield of 'Pink Aurora' was obtained in plants grafted onto the Rosa indica 'Major' rootstock. Overall growth of 'Yellow King' was the greatest in plants grafted onto Rosa multiflora 'Burr' rootstock, although total yield was not affected by the rootstock. These results suggest that Rosa indica 'Major' is the most effective rootstock not only for rooting, but also for early yield and growth for stenting propagation of these cut roses.

  • This study was conducted to investigate growth characteristics of paprika seedlings according to various qualities of LED light (red : blue = 10 : 0, red : blue = 8 : 2, red : blue = 2 : 8, white). Plant height and stem were significantly longer or thicker as red light ratio increased. Leaf area of paprika seedlings with red light was larger or no significant differences in a mixed light of red and blue. Dry weight of seedling was in the same with the result of leaf area. Seedlings with White light was significantly less than others in all characteristics. As red light ratio was increased, relative growth rate increased. As blue light ratio was increased, the net assimilation amount increased. Considering plant height, leaf area and production ability of dry matter per unit leaf area, the using mixed red and blue lights was suitable, especially at a mixed red : blue = 8 : 2.
