Four full-scaled partially confined and unconfined masonry panels were tested with monotonic lateral loads. To study the effects of vertical force and boundary columns, two specimens with no boundary columns were subjected to different vertical forces, while two wing-wall specimens had the column placed eccentrically and in the middle, respectively. The specimens with no boundary columns exhibited ductile rocking behavior, where the lateral strength increased with increasing vertical compression. The wing-wall specimens with columns behaved as strut-and-tie systems. The column-panel interaction resulted in greater strength, lower deformation capacity and differences in failure modes. A comparison with analytical models showed that rocking strength can be accurately estimated using vertical force and the panel aspect ratio for panels with no boundary columns. The estimation for lateral strength on the basis of a panel section area indicated scattered error for wing-wall specimens.
According to the survey results of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs in the end of December 2011, the residential buildings was reported as 67.3% of 4,529,464 buildings. Reflected in the national energy policy, the residential building is expected that greater energy savings. To have realized the Passive House Project used the Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete(ALC) material on exterior wall, we take advantage of a very large energy savings. Therefore, this study investigate the patent documents of three major companies, SUMITOMO, CLION, ASAHI KASEI, in Japan. and analyze technical flow and benchmarking patent. As a result, the Sliding method or the Rocking method of ALC panels how to install is to be superior to high-performance drift and safety by a earthquake. And the embedded anchor in panel needs to improve the shape and the strength of bearing. Thus installation technology of the ALC exterior wall investigated in japanese patent documents is expected to the fastening units and anchors.
$Hg_{1_x}Cd_xTe$ (MCT) was grown by hot wall epitaxy. Prior to the MCT growth, the CdTe (111) buffer layer was grown on the GaAs substrate at the temperature of $590^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. When the thickness of the CdTe buffer layer was $5\;{\mu}m$ or thicker, the full width at half maximum values obtained from the x-ray rocking curves were found to significantly decrease. After a good quality CdTe buffer layer was grown, the MCT epilayers were grown on the CdTe (111) /GaAs substrate at various temperatures in situ. The crystal quality for those epilayers was investigated by means of the x-ray rocking curves and the photocurrent experiment. The photoconductor characterization for the epilayers was also measured. The energy band gap of MCT was determined from the photocurrent measurement and the x composition rates from the temperature dependence of the energy band gap were turned out.
In conventional seismic design, structures are assumed to be fixed at the base. To reduce the impact of earthquake loading, while at the same time providing an economically feasible structure, minor damage is tolerated in the form of controlled plastic hinging at predefined locations in the structure. Uplift is traditionally not permitted because of concerns that it would lead to collapse. However, observations of damage to structures that have been through major earthquakes reveal that partial and temporary uplift of structures can be beneficial in many cases. Allowing a structure to move as a rigid body is in fact one way to limit activated seismic forces that could lead to severe inelastic deformations. To further reduce the induced seismic energy, slip-friction connectors could be installed to act both as hold-downs resisting overturning and as contributors to structural damping. This paper reviews recent research on the concept, with a focus on timber shear walls. A novel approach used to achieve the desired sliding threshold in the slip-friction connectors is described. The wall uplifts when this threshold is reached, thereby imparting ductility to the structure. To resist base shear an innovative shear key was developed. Recent research confirms that the proposed system of timber wall, shear key, and slip-friction connectors, are feasible as a ductile and low-damage structural solution. Additional numerical studies explore the interaction between vertical load and slip-friction connector strength, and how this influences both the energy dissipation and self-centring capabilities of the rocking structure.
Aiming at studying the plastic hinge (PH) evolution regularities and failure mode of rocking wall moment frame (RWMF) structure in earthquakes, the whole-working history analysis of seismic performance state of RWMF structure based on co-operation performance and PH evolution was carried out. Building upon the theoretical analysis of the elastic internal forces and deformations of RWMF structures, nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) methods were employed to perform both Pushover analysis and seismic response time history analysis under different seismic coefficients (δ). The relationships among PH occurrence ratios (Rph), inter-story drifts and δ were established. Based on the plotted curve of the seismic performance states, evaluation limits for the Rph and inter-story drifts were provided for different performance states of RWMF structures. The results indicate that the Rph of RWMF structures exhibits a nonlinear evolution trend of "fast at first, then slow" with the increasing of δ. The general pattern is characterized by the initial development of beam hinges in the middle stories, followed by the development towards the top and bottom stories until the beam hinges are fully formed. Subsequently, the development of column hinges shifts from the bottom and top stories towards the middle stories of the structure, ultimately leading to the loss of seismic lateral capacity with a failure mode of partial beam yield, demonstrating a global yielding pattern. Moreover, the limits for the Rph and inter-story drifts effectively evaluate the five different performance states of RWMF structures.
The objective of this study is to find out the shear capacity of URM wall and the variables that affect the shear capacity of URM wall such as the opening and the aspect ratio, considering four kinds of failure modes, sliding shear failure, toe crushing failure, and diagonal shear failure. The main varialble is the shape of opening of URM walls. First URM has one door, second has one window, third hase one door and one window, the last has two windows. The test results of URM with openings show that the specimens are governed by rocking failure mode.
$$V_n=0.02A_n{\sqrt{f'_m}}+0.022b_gh_g(1+2{\alpha})^3{\sqrt{f_g}}(N/mm^2)$$.
This study investigated the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) wall-slab frames with masonry infills. Four RC wall-slab frames with or without masonry infill were tested under cyclic loading. The RC frames were composed of in-plane and out-of-plane walls and top and bottom slabs. For masonry infill walls, cement bricks were stacked applying mortar paste only at the bed joints, and, at the top, a gap of 50 mm was intentionally left between the masonry wall and top RC slab. Both sides of the masonry walls were finished by applying ordinary or fiber-reinforced mortars. The tests showed that despite the gap on top of the masonry walls, the strength and stiffness of the infilled frames were significantly increased and were different depending on the direction of loading and the finishing mortars. During repeated loading, the masonry walls underwent horizontal and diagonal cracking and corner crushing/spalling, showing a rocking mode inside the RC wall-slab frame. Interestingly, this rocking mode delayed loss of strength, and as a result, the ductility of the infilled frames increased to the same level as the bare frame. The interaction of masonry infill and adjacent RC walls, depending on the direction of loading, was further investigated based on test observations.
