As rock bolts become one of the main support systems in tunnels and underground structures, the integrity of the rock bolts affects the safety of these types of structures. The purpose of this study is the evaluation of rock bolt integrity using Fourier and wavelet transforms of the guided ultrasonic waves. After five rock bolt specimens with various defect ratios are embedded into a large scale concrete block, guided waves are generated by a PZT (lead zirconate titanate) element and measured by an acoustic emission (AE) sensor. The captured signals are analyzed in the frequency domain using the Fourier transform, and in the time-frequency domain using the wavelet transform based on a Gabor wavelet. The spectrum obtained from the Fourier transform shows that a portion of high frequency contents increases with increase in the defect ratio. Peak values in the time-frequency domain represent the interval of travel time of each echo. The energy velocities of the guided waves increase with the defect ratio. This study shows that the spectrum ratio and the energy velocity may be indicators fur the evaluation of rock bolt integrity.
This study is to summarize the contents for the investigation and design of the construction for oil storage. Since underground caverns are large scale, in their construction one should consider the mechanical stability of caverns and the economic view of construction. On the basis of them, cavern's section and layout were determined and water curtains were designed to maintain hydraulic equilibrium so that gases were sealed tightly. Also the supporting criterial for rock bolt and stotcrete were determined by means of the classification of rock masses and the results of finite element method. The criteria of grouting reinforcement were presented according to the results of injection test in the pilot holes of working face.
In order to prove the applicability of rock bolts with compressible spacers, laboratory model tests and large scale model tests were conducted. Laboratory model tests were performed in various distance of compressible spacers to determine the optimal distance of compressible spacers. The optimal distance of compressible spacers was found that is 1/4 of rock bolts unit length. Large scale model tests that the size was 0.6 m (diameter) ${\times}$ 4.45 m (length) were conducted. Test results showed that pull out resistance could be increased up to 15% larger than that of unused case by using compressible spacers.

This Finite Element Program(TAFEM) has been developed to be able to carry out the structural analsis of tunnel section and simulate the surrounding ground behaviour due to New Austrian Tunnelling Method, of which main support is the surrounding ground, itself. The Elasto-plastic theory has been applied. The used finite elements are 8-noded isoparametric element(rock & shotcrete), 2 or 3-noded rod element(rock bolt) and infinite boundary element. The load incremental method and tangential stiffness method has been used. Associated flow rule was applied to plastic flow and yield criteria inclued not only Mohr-Coulomb but also Drucker-Prager. In this paper, Drucker-Prager yield criterion has been used. The relationship between plastic strain and stress is based on the incremental strain concept and stress-strain equation on the basis of the stress path of each gauss point has been adopted. It may be rational that rock is considered to be no-tension material, so that no-tension analysis has been adopted in accordance with the brittle fracture constitutive equation.
To asses the stability of structure around shaft during the excavation of -300 ml hopper room at 2nd shaft in Jangsung mine, some measurements were made with blast monitoring, stressmeter, extensometer and inclinometers. Instrumentations proved to be reliable and data were montiored over six month period. Stressmeters were set at the points of wall and arch of inset gang(level). Induced stresses were measured with the magnitude of 2.81 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$(tensile stress) and -4.45kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$(compressive stress) respectively. These values were converged after two months. The magnitude of axial force in rock bolt was measured with 1.98 ton between the points of M2(2.25m) and M3(1.5 m) but this value was assumed within allowable level. Maximum displacement was also measured with 2 mm at the dephs of 12m from surface. But this value belongs within guide level.

The safety factor of a tunnel considering the failure of supports is important because the failure of supports might cause the collapse of the tunnel. In the previous studies, shotcrete was modelled as beam elements and the failure of the shotcrete was checked according to the allowable working stress concept. In this study, shotcrete was modelled by both beam elements and continuum (elasto-plastic) elements. Safety factors of tunnels were estimated by two dimensional numerical analysis with varying rock mass class, coefficient of lateral pressure, thickness of shotcrete, rock bolt reinforcement and excavation method. Also the study suggested not only a proper amount of supports but also modelling method.

Nationally, tunnel and underground constructions are necessary for the environmental sustainability and the efficient use of land space. For the importance of eco-friendly circumstances, 2-arch or large road tunnel has been designed so far. However, such a 2-arch or large tunnel has problems in terms of cost, constructability, construction period, and maintenance. Therefore, in this study, tunnel behavior and stability of rock pillar according to the pillar width and cover depth for parallel tunnels are investigated by performing FE analysis and using empirical formula. According to the results, Rock pillar is reinforced for distributed vertical load by Tie-Bolt due to unpredicted ground deformation, and the reinforced rock pillar's behaviour from the FE analysis shows a quite good agreement with field measurement. According to ground conditions, if the pillar width of the parallel tunnels is reduced, it can be more efficient in use of the tunnel space compared to previous tunnels.
Although many researches related to monitoring and automatic measuring devices for early warning system during slope failure have been carried out in Korea and aboard, most of the researches have installed measuring devices on the slope surface, and there are only few researches about warning systems that can detect and warn before slope failure and disaster occurs. In this study, slope failure simulation experiment was performed by attaching sensors to rock bolts, and initial slope behavior characteristics during slope failure were analyzed. Also, the experiment results were compared and reviewed with varied slope conditions, i.e. shotcrete slope and natural slope, and varied material conditions, i.e. GFRP and steel rock bolt. This study can be used as a basic data in development of warning and alarm system for early evacuation through early detection and warning before slope failure occurs in steep slopes and slope failure vulnerable areas.

A Modern Rock TBM is a tunnel excavation method combining the conventional tunnelling method with the mechanized tunnelling method. It is a hybrid system that excavates a tunnel with TBM and supports the ground by ring beam, wire mesh, rock bolt, shotcrete, i.e., conventional tunnelling method. In the Modern Rock TBM, a ring beam is similar to a steel rib in NATM in the way that uses H-beam. But using a ring beam is more effective than a steel rib because it is installed in a closed-circle. Therefore, improving the performance of the ring beam is a key factor for achieving tunnel stability. In this respect, this study introduces a pressurized ring beam that might be functioning more effectively by confining convergence during tunnel excavation. In order to verify the effect of the pressurized ring beam, a three-dimensional numerical analysis was conducted. The numerical analysis confirms an increase in the minimum principal stress and reduction in the plastic strain that triggers excessive displacement. The analysis result also indicates a decrease in the relative displacement occurring after installing the ring beam, and expansion in spacing between the ring beams.

One of the most frequent issues in tunnel excavation is the collapse of rock blocks and the dropping of rock fragments from the tunnel face. The tunnel face can be reinforced using a number of techniques. One of the most popular and affordable solutions is the use of face longitudinal dowels, which has benefits including high strength, flexibility, and ease of cutting. In order to examine the reinforced face, this work shows the longitudinal deformation profile and ground response curve for a tunnel face. This approach is based on assumptions made during the analysis phase of problem solving. By knowing the tunnel face response and dowel behavior, the interaction of two elements can be solved. The rock element equation derived from the rock bolt method is combined with the dowel differential equation to solve the reinforced ground response curve (GRC). With a straightforward and accurate analytical equation, the new differential equation produces the reinforced displacement of the tunnel face at each stage of excavation. With simple equations and a less involved computational process, this approach offers quick and accurate solutions. The FLAC3D simulation has been compared with the suggested analytical approach. A logical error is apparent from the discrepancies between the two solutions. Each component of the equation's effect has also been described.
