This paper presents a disturbance observer-based robust backstepping load-following control (DO-RBLFC) scheme for modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (MHTGRs) in the presence of actuator saturation and disturbances. Based on reactor kinetics and temperature reactivity feedback, the mathematical model of the MHTGR is first established. After that, a DO is constructed to estimate the unknown compound disturbances including model uncertainties, external disturbances, and unmeasured states. Besides, the actuator saturation is compensated by employing an auxiliary function in this paper. With the help of the DO, a robust load-following controller is developed via the backstepping technique to improve the load-following performance of the MHTGR subject to disturbances. At last, simulation and comparison results verify that the proposed DO-RBLFC scheme offers higher load-following accuracy, better disturbances rejection capability, and lower control rod speed than a PID controller, a conventional backstepping controller, and a disturbance observer-based adaptive sliding mode controller.

A robust speed control algorithm under disturbances and reference change is developed using the self tuning control method in order to control induction motors. The method incorporates the concepts of the well known internal model principle and the annihilator polynomial. The effectiveness of the method is evaluated through the speed control experimental results of an induction motor for refernce change and arbitrary distrbance.

In this paper, a modeling and a robust time-delay control for the reclaimer are investigated. Supplying the same amount of a raw material throughout the reclamation process from the raw yard to a sinter plant is important to keep the quality of the molten steel uniform in blast furnaces. As the actual parameter values of the reclaimer are not available, the boom rotational dynamics are modeled as a second order differential equation with unknown coefficients. The unknown parameters in the nominal model are estimated using a recursive estimation method. Another important factor in the control design of the reclaimer is the large time-delay in output measurement. Assuming a multiplicative uncertainty, that accounts for both the unstructured uncertainty neglected in the modeling and the structured uncertainty contained in the parameter estimation, a robust Smith predictor is designed. A robust stability criterion for the multiplicative uncertainty is also derived. Following the work of Goodwin et al. [4], a quantifying procedure of the multiplicative uncertainty bound, through experiments , is described. Experimental and simulation results are provided.

In this paper, we propose a robust fingertip extraction and extended Continuously Adaptive Mean Shift (CAMSHIFT) based robust hand gesture recognition for natural human-like HRI (Human-Robot Interaction). Firstly, for efficient and rapid hand detection, the hand candidate regions are segmented by the combination with robust $YC_bC_r$ skin color model and haar-like features based adaboost. Using the extracted hand candidate regions, we estimate the palm region and fingertip position from distance transformation based voting and geometrical feature of hands. From the hand orientation and palm center position, we find the optimal fingertip position and its orientation. Then using extended CAMSHIFT, we reliably track the 2D hand gesture trajectory with extracted fingertip. Finally, we applied the conditional density propagation (CONDENSATION) to recognize the pre-defined temporal motion trajectories. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm not only rapidly extracts the hand region with accurately extracted fingertip and its angle but also robustly tracks the hand under different illumination, size and rotation conditions. Using these results, we successfully recognize the multiple hand gestures.

A new robust load-frequency control methodology is proposed for nonlinear power systems with valve position limits of the governor in the presence of parametric uncertaines. The TSK fuzzy model is adopted and formulated for fuzzy modeling of the nonlinear power system. A sufficient condition of the robust stabilitry is presented in the sense of lyapunov for the TSK model with parametric uncertainties. The intekkigent digital redesign technique for the uncertain power systems is also studied. The effectiveness of the robust digital fuzzy controller disign mothod is demonstrated through a numerical simulation.

The objective of this paper is to design a robust controller for a flexible robot arm manipulator using LMI(Linear Matrix Inequality) theory, and confirm its effectiveness through experimentation. We first describe a modeling Process of the flexible arm in order to get a mathematical model, and then discuss how to approximately obtain the uncertainty of the model for robust control. As to the control system design, we adopt the LMI-based H$_{\infty}$ synthesis algorithm which has the merits of eliminating the regularity restrictions attached to the Riccati-based methods. As a result of this, we can cope with the parameter variation (that is, modeling uncertainty) due to the tip-load variation. Finally we confirm the effectiveness of the controller through experiment and simulation.

This paper presents a robust centralized control scheme for a magnetic bearing system which supports a rigid rotor at both shaft ends in the radial direction. The negative stiffness element and the inductive force associated with bearing magnetic field are considered in the dynamic model of the system. For this model, the controllability and observability are examined, and then a robust control theory is applied to design two types of multi-input multi-output servocontrollers. A general servocompensator is embedded in the first one and a centralized PID controller is suggested as a second one. By simulation study, the performance of two types of servocontrollers are compared in the aspects of disturbance rejection, reference tracking and the robustness limit.

This research examines the alternative ways of estimating the coefficient of non-diversifiable risk, namely beta coefficient, in Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) introduced by Sharpe (1964) that is an essential element of assessing the value of diverse assets. The non-parametric methods used in this research are the robust Least Trimmed Square (LTS) and Maximum likelihood type of M-estimator (MM-estimator). The Jackknife, the resampling technique, is also employed to validate the results. According to finance literature and common practices, these coecients have often been estimated using Ordinary Least Square (LS) regression method and monthly return data set. The empirical results of this research pointed out that the robust Least Trimmed Square (LTS) and Maximum likelihood type of M-estimator (MM-estimator) performed much better than Ordinary Least Square (LS) in terms of eciency for large-cap stocks trading actively in the United States markets. Interestingly, the empirical results also showed that daily return data would give more accurate estimation than monthly return data in both Ordinary Least Square (LS) and robust Least Trimmed Square (LTS) and Maximum likelihood type of M-estimator (MM-estimator) regressions.

Systematical robust stability analysis and design scheme for the feedback linearization control systems via fuzzy modeling are proposed. It is considered that uncertainty and disturbances are included in the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models representing the nonlinear plants. Robust stability of the closed system is analyzed by casting the systems into the diagonal norm bounded linear differential inclusions and by converting the analysis and design problems into the linear matrix inequality optimization, a numerical method for finding the maximum stable ranges of the fuzzy feedback linearization control gains is also proposed. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, the robust stability analysis and control design examples are given.

The vehicle suspension system plays a very important part related with vehicle ride and handling. To improve the vehicle ride and handling many researches have been progressed from various damping parameter tuning techniques to the development of the electronic controlled suspension systems. In this paper, as one of the ride performance improvement a disturbance observer(DOB) based control system is applied to the quarter car vehicle model in order to show that the DOB can obtain good vibration isolation characteristics. First, the robust stability criterion for the DOB is introduced in detail, and then how DOB is applied to the 1/4 car vehicle model is represented, and finally to confirm the effectiveness of the DOB in vehicle ride performance improvement a computer simulation is carried out for various driving conditions.
