Power Quality Compensator(PQC) has been installed to protect the sensitive loads against the voltage disturbances, such as voltage sag and interruption. In general, static switch is used for the purpose of link between utility and PQC. So transfer operation of the static switch play a important part in the PQC. Many studies on the structure and control of PQC have been progressed in active, but these researches have been rarely mentioned about any voltage-disturbances-detection method to start the PQC operation. In this paper, a new voltage-disturbances-detection algorithm for computer application loads using the CBEMA/ITIC curve is proposed for transfer operation of the static switch. The proposed detection algorithm is implemented to get fast detecting time through the comparison of instantaneous 3-phase voltage values transferred to DC values in the synchronous reference frame with the operating reference values. To get the robust characteristics against the noise, a first order digital filter is designed. The magnitude falling and phase delay caused by the filter are compensated through the error normalizing and numerical analysis using transfer function, respectively. Finally, the validity of the proposed algorithm is proved by ACSL simulation and experimental results.

AFLS (Adaptive front lighting system) is being applied to improve safety in driving automotive at night. Safe embedded system design for controlling head-lamps is required to improve noise robust ECU hardware and software simultaneously by considering safety requirement of hardware-dependent software under severe environmental noise. In this paper, we propose an adaptive headlight controller with a newly-designed symmetric angle sensor compensator, especially based on the proposed steering-swivel angle lookup table to determine whether the current controlling target is safe. The proposed system includes an additional backup hardware to compare the system status and provides safe swivel-angle management using a controlling algorithm based on the pre-defined lookup table (LUT), which is a symmetric mapping relationship between the requested steering angle and expected swivel angle target. The implemented system model shows that the proposed architecture effectively detects abnormal situations and restores safe status of controlling the light-angle in AFLS operations under severe noisy environment.

This paper proposes a common rail pressure control algorithm for passenger car diesel engines. For handling the parameter-varying characteristics of common rail systems, the quantitative feedback theory (QFT) is applied to the design of a robust rail pressure control algorithm. The driving current of the pressure control valve and the common rail pressure are used as the input/output variables for the common rail system model. The model parameter uncertainty ranges are identified through experiments. Rail pressure controller requirements in terms of tracking performance, robust stability, and disturbance rejection are defined on a Nichols chart, and these requirements are fulfilled by designing a compensator and a prefilter in the QFT framework. The proposed common rail pressure control algorithm is validated through engine experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed rail pressure controller has a good degree of consistency under various operating conditions, and it successfully satisfies the requirements for reference tracking and disturbance rejection.

A hydraulic dipod platform is used for tracking and stabilizing an antenna system to designate a satellite on a moving vehicle. The 2-DOF controller is very well suited to this controller design object because it is more flexible than the 1-DOF controller when the design object is not only the consideration between stabilizing and tracking but also the trade-off between performance and robustness. The 2-DOF controller synthesis based on the $H_{\infty}$ framework is divided into two design procedures. In this hydraulic dipod platform example, the single-step method shows better performance whereas the two-step method shows better robustness. The difference between these two synthesis results is compared using the structural property of the interconnection system matrix.

The power quality of Single Phase Grid-Connected Inverters (GCIs) has received much attention with the increasing number of Distributed Generation (DG) systems. However, the performance of single phase GCIs get degraded due to several factors such as the grid voltage harmonics, the dead time effect, and the turn ON/OFF of the switches, which causes the harmonics at the output of GCIs. Therefore, it is not easy to satisfy the harmonic standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 without the help of harmonic compensator. To meet the harmonic standards a certain kind of harmonic controller needs to be added to the current control loop to effectively mitigate the low order harmonics. In this paper, the harmonic compensation is performed using a novel robust harmonic compensation method based on Digital Lock-in Amplifier (DLA). In the proposed technique, DLAs are used to extract the amplitude and phase information of the harmonics from the output current and compensate it by using a simple PI controller in the feedforward manner. In order to show the superior performance of the proposed harmonic compensation technique, it is compared with those of conventional harmonic compensation methods in terms of the effectiveness of harmonic elimination, complexity, and implementation. The validity of the proposed harmonic compensation techniques for the single phase GCIs is verified through the experimental results with a 5kW single phase GCI. Index Terms -Single Phase Grid Connected Inverter (SPGCI), Harmonic Compensation Method, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and Harmonic Standard.

Recently, efforts of decreasing energy consumption are continously increased and user's preference is also diversified in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Thus, in order to satisfy these demands, high efficiency, high intelligence, and energy saving for those systems are essential. As the basic study for diverse functions and intelligence of those systems, we investigated the response characteristics through the compressor capacity control concerned with superheat and refrigeration room temperature. And, response characteristics are investigated experimentally by using micro computer based PWM inverter control method. Experimental result of the conventional on-off control method is given in order to be compared to the results of inverter control method. The results obtained through this study are summarized as follows. It is shown from the experimental results of the on-off control method that the range of temperature variation around the steady state ($-18^{\circ}C$) is very large (about $7{\sim}8^{\circ}C$) and the settling time bringing the steady state is not found. In the inverter control method, we can see that the refrigeration room temperature after reaching the setting temperature is very stable without fluctuation and a robust control for disturbance such as opening the door has been realized.

Through the motion control experiment using Industrial Emulator(Model 220 by ECP), the performance comparison of three kinds of controllers such as PID, RIC and LQR was carried out. It was shown that RIC has the best performance in the presence of disturbances such as step one, sinusoidal one and Coulomb friction for the rigid body. LQR using feedback state variables has the best tracking performance far the flexible body. The performance of PID controller is low compared to other controllers, but the design process is simple. The most advanced controller is LQR. In order to attenuate disturbance, an additional state observer should be used to estimate it, making more complex control system. RIC lies between PID and LQR in view of complexity of design. Even though RIC is not complicated, it has good disturbance rejection ability and less tracking error. By considering these aspects, the RIC is suggested as high precision controller to be used in motion control system.

An adaptive observer for rotor resistance is designed to estimate rotor flux for the a-b model of an induction motor assuming that rotor speed and stator currents are measurable. A singularly perturbed model of the motor is used to design an Adaptive sliding mode observer which drives the estimated stator currents to their true values in the fast time scale. The adaptive observer on the sliding surface is based on the equivalent switching vector and both the estimated fluxes and the estimated rotor resistance converge to their true values. A speed controller considering the effects of parameter variations and external disturbance is proposed in this paper. First, induction motor dynamic model at nominal case is estimated. based on the estimated model, speed controller is designed to match the prescribed speed tracking specifications. Then a dead-time compensator and a robust controller are designed to reduce the effects of parameter variations and external disturbances. the desired speed tracking control performance can be preserved under wide operating range, and good speed load regulating performance. Some simulated results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Proposed controller.

The problem of designing a parallel feedforward compensator (PFC) is considered for a class of non-square linear systems such that the closed-loop system is strictly passive. If a given square system has (vector) relative degree one and is weakly minimum phase, the system can be rendered passive by a state feedback. However, when the system states are not always measurable and the given output is considered, passivation (i.e. rendering passive) of a non-minimum phase system or a system with high relative degree cannot be achieved by any other methodologies except by using a PFC. To passivate a non-square system we first determine a squaring gain matrix and design a PFC such that the composite system has relative degree one and is minimum phase. Then the system is rendered strictly passvie by a static output feedback law. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the PFC and the squaring gain matrix are given by the static output feedback formulation, which enables to utilize linear matrix inequality (LMI). As an application of the scheme, an alternative way of replacing the role of velocity measurements is provided for the PD-control law of a convey-crane system.

In this paper, Time Delay Control(TDC) for robot manipulators is analyzed and its problems are founded. In order to remedy the problems, the enhanced controller is proposed and analyzed. The effect of friction associated with TDC is reported and its cause is presented. Through the analysis, simulation and experiment, it is shown that the friction effect causes serious degradation in control performance and that it is a result of the error of Time Delay Estimation(TDE) in TDC. In order to remedy the problems, TDC combined with Internal Model Control(IMC) concept is proposed. The proposed compensator is effective enough to handle the bad effect of friction, and is so simple and efficient as to match positive attribute of TDC. The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of proposed controller against the friction of the robot manipulators.
