This paper presents the development of a 3D printed humanoid robotic hands of SignBot, which can perform Malaysian Sign Language (MSL). The study is considered as the first attempt to ease the means of communication between the general community and the hearing-impaired individuals in Malaysia. The signed motions performed by the developed robot in this work can be done by two hands. The designed system, unlike previously conducted work, includes a speech recognition system that can feasibly integrate with the controlling platform of the robot. Furthermore, the design of the system takes into account the grammar of the MSL which differs from that of Malay spoken language. This reduces the redundancy and makes the design more efficient and effective. The robot hands are built with detailed finger joints. Micro servo motors, controlled by Arduino Mega, are also loaded to actuate the relevant joints of selected alphabetical and numerical signs as well as phrases for emergency contexts from MSL. A database for the selected signs is developed wherein the sequential movements of the servo motor arrays are stored. The results showed that the system performed well as the selected signs can be understood by hearing-impaired individuals.
An optimal graspiftg algorithms for a multifingered robotic hand is proposed, where a new quality measure is developed to evaluate task-oriented as well as stability by modelling the tasks as ellipsoids. To show the validities of the proposed algorithm, several numerical examples are presented by employing a 3-fingered robotic hand.
An algorithm is proposed to determine the optimal contact forces of robotic hands, where the soft finger contact as well as the frictional point contact are considered. Especially, the algorithm can be efficiently applied to the case of multi-point contact by inner-link as well as fingertip. To show the validities of the algorithm, several numerical exampies are presented by employing a robotics hand with three fingers each of which has four joints.
Robotic exoskeletons are kind of wearable robots enabling operators to amplify the force. There are several possible applications in plenty of options: to put very heavy products into right positions for assemblies, to rescue people from natural disasters, and to work for medical rehabilitation etc. In this study, the exoskeleton hands were designed and fabricated using 3-D printer. It would be the good case of application of 3-D printer to design and fabricate the exoskeleton hands.
Organ preservation surgery and minimally invasive surgery have been developed during the past 20 years with major focus on transoral laser surgery, endoscopic surgery, and robotic surgery. Two major robotic surgeries in head and neck area are transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and robotic thyroidectomy. Transoral robotic surgery is a safe and efficacious method of surgical treatment of oropharyngeal. hypopharyngeal and laryngeal neoplasm. Advantages of the technique include adequate ability to visualize and manipulate lesions with two hands. TORS can provide magnified three dimensional views and overcome the limitation resulting from the "line of sight" which hinders transoral laser procedure. The swallowing function following transoral robotic surgery show superior and patients were able to retain or rapidly regain swallowing function in the majority of cases. Recently, robotic thyroidectomy has also been developed to overcome the [imitation of endoscopic thyroidectomy. Robotic thyroidectomy by a gasless unilateral axillo-breast or axillary approach using a da Vinci S Surgical Robot is a feasible and cosmetically excellent procedure. It can be a promising alternative to endoscopic thyroidectomy or conventional open thyroidectomy.
We define that the end effector is the device which interact environment or objects with contact to execute tasks. Up to now, many researchers developed anthropomorphic robotic hands as end effectors. In this paper, we will discuss a problem on the development of a human-scale and motor-driven anthropomorphic robot hand. In this paper, design concept, actuator and transmission, kinematic design and sensing device are presented. By imitating the physiology of human hands, we devised new metacarpalphalangeal joint and interphalangeal joint suitable for human-size robot hands
This paper presents a simple and robust under-actuated robotic finger mechanism that enables self-adaptive grip, fingertip pinch, and caging grasp functions. In order to perform daily activities using hands, the fingers should be able to perform adaptive gripping and pinching motion, and the caging grasp function is required to realize natural gripping motions and improve grip reliability. However, general commercial prosthetic hands cannot implement all three functions because they use under-actuation mechanism and simple mechanical structure to achieve light-weight and high robustness characteristic. In this paper, new mechanism is proposed that maintains structural simplicity and implements all the three finger functions with simple one degree-of-freedom control through a combination of a four-bar linkage mechanism and a wire-driven mechanism. The basic structure and operating principle of the proposed finger mechanism were explained, and simulation and experiments using the prototype were conducted to verify the gripping performance of the proposed finger mechanism.

This paper presents a task-based analysis on the number of independent robotic fingers required for compliant manipulations. Based on the stiffness relation between operational space and fingertip space of a multi-fingered object manipulating system, we describe a technique for modulation of the fingertip stiffness without inter-finger coupling so as to achieve the desired stiffness specified in the operational space. Thus, we provides a guide line how many fingers are basically required for successful multi-fingered compliant tasks. Consequently, this paper enables us to assign effectively the number of fingers for various compliant manipulations by robot hands.
The inverse kinematics problem in robotics is an essential work for grasping and manipulation tasks by robotic and humanoid hands. In this paper, an intelligent neural learning scheme for solving such inverse kinematics of humanoid fingers is presented. Specifically, a multi-layered neural network is utilized for effective inverse kinematics, where a dynamic neural learning algorithm is employed. Also, a bio-mimetic feature of general human fingers is incorporated to the learning scheme. The usefulness of the proposed approach is verified by simulations.
The Avatar robot, which is one of the teleoperation robots, aims to enable users to feel the robot as a part of the body to intuitively and naturally perform various tasks. Considering the purpose of the avatar robot, an end-effector identical to a human hand is advantageous, but a robotic hand with human hand level performance has not yet been developed. In this paper we propose a new 3-finger robotic hand with human-avatar hand posture mapping algorithm which were integrated with TOCABI-AVATAR, one of the teleoperation system. Due to the flexible rolling contact joints and tendon driven mechanism applied to the finger, the finger could implement adaptive grasping and absorb the impact force caused by unexpected contacts. In addition, human-avatar hand mapping algorithm using five calibration hand postures propose to compensate physical differences between operators. Using the TOCABI-AVATAR system with the robotic hands and mapping algorithm, the operator can perform 13 out of 16 hand postures of grasping taxonomy and 4 gestures. In addition, using the system, we participated in the ANA AVATAR XPRIZE Semi-final and successfully performed three scenarios which including various social interactions as well as object manipulation.
