  • In multi-mobile robot environment, path planning and collision avoidance are important issue to perform a given task collaboratively and cooperatively. The proposed approach is based on a potential field method and fuzzy logic system. For a global path planner, potential field method is employed to select proper path of a corresponding robot and fuzzy logic system is utilized to avoid collisions with static or dynamic obstacles around the robot. This process is continued until the corresponding target of each robot is reached. To test this method, several simulation-based experimental results are given. The results show that the path planning and collision avoidance strategies are effective and useful for multi-mobile robot systems.

  • We propose the hybrid control for the path control of wheeled mobile robot system. To develop the hybrid control of mobile robot, the continuous dynamics of mobile robot are modeled by the switched systems. The abstract model and digital automata for the path control are developed. This hybrid control system has the 3-layered hierachical structure : digital automata as the higher process, mobile robot system as the lower process, and the interface as the interaction process between the continuous dynamics and the discrete dynamics. The control of following the desired-paths with edges are investigated as the applications by the computer simulation.

  • An engine for marine propulsion and power generation consists of several cylinder liner-piston sets. And the oil groove is on the cylinder liner inside wall for the lubrication between a piston and cylinder. The machining process of oil groove has been carried by manual work so far, because of the diversity of the shape. Recently, we developed an automatic grinding robot system for oil groove machining of engine cylinder liners. It can covers various types of oil grooves and adjust its position by itself. The grinding robot system consists of a robot, a machining tool head, sensors and a control system. The robot automatically recognizes the cylinder liner's inside configuration by using a laser displacement sensor and a vision sensor after the cylinder liner is placed on a set-up equipment.

  • A hybrid control structure for vision-based soccer robot system is considered. The structure is om-posed of four levels such as the role action behavior and execution levels. The control structure which is a combination of hierarchical and behavioral structures can efficiently meet the behavior and design specifications of a soccer robot system Among the four levels only the design of the action level is proposed in the paper and is experimentally evaluated. Design hypothesis and evaluation method are presented to improve the reliability and accomplishment of the robot system. Due to the essential element of soccer robot system design a systematic design procedure of the action level is proposed With the proposed structure and algorithm of the action level the excellent result was shown at the MiroSot'98 held in France.

  • Increasing requirements for the high quality of industrial robot performance made the vibration control issue very important because the vibration makes it difficult to achieve quick response of robot motion and may bring mechanical damage to the robot. This paper presents the vibration mechanism of an industrial robot which has flexible joints. The joint flexibility of the robot is modeled as a two-mass system and its dynamic characteristics are analysed. And some characteristics of the two-mass system, especially for the joint of industrial robots, such as disturbance, non-linearity and time-varying characteristics are studied. And finally, some considerations on controller design for the flexible joint of industrial robots are discussed.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of Internet-based robot system controlled on the remote site via the Internet. In order to draw the public attention into this exciting system, we built the simple system by which a robot is moved in response to answer for the given OX quizzes. As the primary research fer Internet-based robot control, this study focuses on the development of user-friendly interface by which a beginner achieves information for a robot on the remote site from the 3D virtual simulator and the real camera image. for the compensation of Internet time delay, position prediction simulator is implemented in the user interface.

  • The position control accuracy of the robot arm is decreased significantly when a long arm robot is operated at high speed. In this case, the robot arm must be modeled as a flexible structure, not a rigid one, and its control system will be necessarily designed with its elastic modes taken into account. In this paper, the vibration control of a one-link flexible robot arm is presented. The robot system consists of a flexible arm manufactured with thin aluminium plate, AC servomotor with a harmonic drive for speed reduction, optical encoder and accelerometer. The system is modeled with limited number of elastic modes, and its parameters are determined from the results of the experiments. The implemented control schemes are LQ control and sliding mode control. The experiments and digital simulations are carried out to test the validity of the system modeling, controller design, and active control implementation.

  • An real-time active beacon localization system for mobile robots is developed and implemented. This system permits the estimation of robot positions when detecting light sources by PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) sensor which are placed sparsely over the robot's work space as beacons(or landmarks). An LSE(Least Square Estimation) method is introduced to calibrate the internal parameters of a model for the beacon and robot position. The proposed system has two operational modes of position estimation. One is the initial position calculation by the detection of two or more light sources positions of which are known. The other is the continuous position compensation that calculates the position and heading of the robot using the IEKF(Iterated Extended Kalman Filter) applied to the beacon and dead-reckoning data. Practical experiments show that the estimated position obtained by this system is precise enough to be useful for the navigation of robots.
