Spherical Robot for Planetary Explorations: An Approach to Educating Concepts of Mechatronics and Robotics to High School Students

  • Many countries and international organizations have carried out rover missions to explore planetary surfaces. Accordingly, the demand for mechatronics education, which is closely related to building exploratory robots, is also steadily increasing. However, due to the complexity in understanding the background information needed for mechatronics, it is hard for pre-college students to study such process. In this study, we suggest an educational platform for mechatronics using a combined robot kit with a spherical robot and a smartphone application. To provide a visual understanding, the dynamic model of the robot is constructed while analyzing the error between actual driving and a simulation, and the educational algorithm of the game and a feedback method are proposed to improve the learning efficacy by considering the user's level of knowledge of mechatronics. We use this educational spherical robot to develop a curling game platform that can impart engineering education even when students lack significant knowledge.

  • In this paper, we present autonomous mobile robot system, which has an image recognition module and perform tasks by itself with manipulator. Autonomous mobile robot can push each individual button on an elevator panel from a person's command. After the robot receives its command, it analyzes the image information of the elevator button that is acquired by CCD camera in an indoor environment with an elevator.   • The problem of establishing the servo system to reach the desired location keeping all features in the field of view and following a straight line is considered. In addition, robustness of camera calibration parameters is considered in this paper. The proposed approach is based on switching from position-based visual servoing (PBVS) to image-based visual servoing (IBVS) and allows the camera path to follow a straight line. To achieve the objective, a pose estimation method is required; the camera's target pose is estimated from the obtained images without the knowledge of the object. A switched control law moves the camera equipped to a robot end-effector near the desired location following a straight line in Cartesian space and then positions it to the desired pose with robustness to camera calibration error. Finally simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed visual servoing technique.

  • 로봇이 환경변화에 능동적으로 대처하기 위해서는 화상정보를 이용한 시각귀환제어(VFC)가 필요하다. 시각귀환 제어시스템은 매니퓰레이터와 카메라로 구성되는데, 고정된 시각시스템의 경우, 특징량이 동일선상에 위치하면 시각귀환제어를 할 수 없는 특이치 문제가 발생한다. 특이치 문제를 해결하기 위한 방법으로 이미지 자코비안의 상태값을 정의하고, 여러가지 경우 특징량을 조합 평가하여 이용 가능한 특징량을 선택하는 방법이 있다. 그러나 이 방법은 특징량의 수를 증가해야하는 단점이 있다. 그러므로 본 논문에서는 시각귀환시스템의 카메라를 능동적으로 이동시키므로써 특이치가 발생하지 않는 알고리즘을 제안하고, 시뮬레이션을 통해 그 유효성을 확인한다.

  • This paper describes a novel navigation algorithm using a locomotion interface with two 6-DOF parallel robotic manipulators. The suggested novel navigation system can induce user's real walking and generate realistic visual feedback during navigation, using robotic manipulators. For realistic visual feedback, the virtual environment is designed with three components; 3D object modeler for buildings and terrains, scene manager and communication manager component. The walking velocity of the user is directly translated to VR actions for navigation. Finally, the functions of the RPC interface are utilized for each interaction mode. The suggested navigation system can allow a user to explore into various virtual terrains with real walking and realistic visual feedback.

Automatic Inspection of Reactor Vessel Welds using an Underwater Mobile Robot guided by a Laser Pointer

  • In the nuclear power plant, there are several cylindrical vessels such as reactor vessel, pressuriser and so on. The vessels are usually constructed by welding large rolled plates, forged sections or nozzle pipes together. In order to assure the integrity of the vessel, these welds should be periodically inspected using sensors such as ultrasonic transducer or visual cameras. This inspection is usually conducted under water to minimize exposure to the radioactively contaminated vessel walls. The inspections have been performed by using a conventional inspection machine with a big structural sturdy column, however, it is so huge and heavy that maintenance and handling of the machine are extremely difficult. It requires much effort to transport the system to the site and also requires continuous use of the utility's polar crane to move the manipulator into the building and then onto the vessel. Setup beside the vessel requires a large volume of work preparation area and several shifts to complete. In order to resolve these problems, we have developed an underwater mobile robot guided by the laser pointer, and performed a series of experiments both in the mockup and in the real reactor vessel. This paper introduces our robotic inspection system and the laser guidance of the mobile robot as well as the results of the functional test.

  • Robovie-R2 [1], developed by ATR, is a 110cm high, 60kg weight, two wheel drive, human like robot. It has two arms with dynamic fingers. It also has a position sensitive detector sensor and two cameras as eyes on his head for recognizing his surrounding environment. Recent years, we have carried out a project to integrate new functions into Robovie-R2 so as to make it possible to be used in a dining room in healthcare center for helping serving meal for elderly. As a new function, we have developed software system for adaptive movement control of Robovie-R2 that is primary important since a robot that cannot autonomously control its movement would be a dangerous object to the people in dining room. We used the cameras on Robovie-R2's head to catch environment images, applied our original algorithm for recognizing obstacles such as furniture or people, so as to control Roboie-R2's movement. In this paper, we will focus our algorithm and its results.

  • 실제 산업현장에서 비젼 시스템을 적용하기에는 로봇 비젼 제어알고리즘의 기구학모델의 정확도, 로봇이 움직이는 동안 카메라 초점거리와 방위에 대한 보정, 3 차원 물리적 좌표에서 2 차원 카메라 좌표로의 매핑에 대한 이해 등 해결해야 할 많은 문제점들이 있다. 본 논문에 제안된 비젼 시스템 모델은 카메라와 로봇 사이의 상대적인 위치가 알려지지 않아도 제어가 가능하고, 카메라 보정 문제를 해결하기 위해 6 개의 카메라 매개변수를 가지는 비젼 시스템 모델을 제시하였으며, 이를 이용하여 로봇 비젼 제어알고리즘 개발에 N-R 방법과 EKF 방법을 적용하였다. 최종적으로 N-R 과 EKF 방법에 의하여 개발된 로봇 비젼 제어 알고리즘의 위치 정밀도와 데이터 처리 시간을 얇은 막대 배치작업을 수행하여 비교하였다.

영상처리와 센서융합을 활용한 지능형 6족 이동 로봇 (Intelligent Hexapod Mobile Robot using Image Processing and Sensor Fusion)

  • A intelligent mobile hexapod robot with various types of sensors and wireless camera is introduced. We show this mobile robot can detect objects well by combining the results of active sensors and image processing algorithm. First, to detect objects, active sensors such as infrared rays sensors and supersonic waves sensors are employed together and calculates the distance in real time between the object and the robot using sensor's output. The difference between the measured value and calculated value is less than 5%. This paper suggests effective visual detecting system for moving objects with specified color and motion information. The proposed method includes the object extraction and definition process which uses color transformation and AWUPC computation to decide the existence of moving object. We add weighing values to each results from sensors and the camera. Final results are combined to only one value which represents the probability of an object in the limited distance. Sensor fusion technique improves the detection rate at least 7% higher than the technique using individual sensor.

  • 로봇 시스템에서 사용되는 정밀 감속기 중에 사이클로이드 감속기는 높은 성능을 갖추고 있다. 이러한 사이클로이드 감속기를 설계하는 경우에는 많은 요소들을 고려해야 한다. 우선 기본 개념을 바탕으로 치형의 기하학적 분석이 그려져야만 한다. 그리고 기어의 이에 걸리는 하중과 스트레스, 수정계수를 정확히 계산하여야 한다. 마지막으로는 사이클로이드 치의 설계에 활용하기 위한 컴퓨터 소프트웨어는 기하학과 힙의 방정식을 기초로 발전할 필요가 있다. 이 논문에서 사이클로이드 감속기 설계 전문가 시스템은 비주얼C++를 사용하여 개발되어 진다. 그러므로 가장 중요한 요소는 사용자가 간단한 입력값을 넣음으로써 자동으로 구할 수 있다는 것이다.
