  • This paper describes the methods to propose the optimal material properties and construction steps that prevent cracks due to the thermal stresses induced by the hydration heat under the construction of the concrete underpass structures. To achieve the goal of this study, the heat transfer theories were employed and the three-dimensional finite element model of the underpass structure was developed and used for the structural analyses. If the volume of the concrete member that is placed at one time is significantly large, the member is assumed to be the mass concrete and is easy to induce cracks. In order to minimize the cracks during the construction, two different methods can be utilized: one is to arrange the construction steps optimally and the other is to change the materials to reduce the probability of the crack occurrence. In this study, the analyses were performed by considering the changes in material properties with time, the characteristics of the hydration heat generation for cements and admixtures, the volume of the concrete placement at one time, and the environmental conditions.

  • A pavement structure analysis model plays a very important role which can correlate input variables to performance models. In this research, a standard shell element model was developed by use of the ABAQUS program so that behaviors of concrete pavements be analyzed. The model was verified in terms of its accuracy by way of comparing the results to those gathered from closed-form Solutions, the Everfe program, and the ABAQUS program with a solid model. Many input variables were analyzed in the model, and the results were stored in a database. Based on the SPSS program, stress equations with respect to temperature and curling effects were developed. All models gave over 0.90 of R2 value except the case considering top-down curling (R2=0.86)

  • A river space means the river related environments such as rIver and floodplain. Because river space data include two-dimensional and three¬dimensional characters. geographic informat ion system is an effect ive tool to manage the data. The objective of this study is to construct the pilot system called RSDB '93 and to simulate the system in practical aspects. The local area for the study was limited about 12km from Jamsil cheolgyo to Dongjak daegyo of the Han River. PC ARC/INFO was selected which can be used on PC 386DX. The Graphic data in an establ ished database contain river layer. floodplain layer. road layer. profile site and hydraulic structure site8 layer. Attributes include water prof i Ie. ut i I i ty status. ecological data. landmark data. hyd¬rology data. water quality data. aerial photo and other photos. RSDB '93 is a system presenting the potentials for the effective river space management which can be applied to all the domestic rivers.

  • Ground vibration caused by blasting in the urban area close to structures can give some indirect damage to human body and may lead to structural damage to buildings. At the stage of design or when complaints were filed by residents, the test blasting in borehole, which is most practical for expressing simple vibration wave form quantitatively, is usually chosen for assessing the degree of damage to structures. In this paper, some lessons gained from the application of electronic detonator triggering system in borehole test blasting are presented. The difference in delay time of detonator when borehole is blasted by electronic detonator and electric detonator are discussed. The peak particle velocities measured at the structure embedded in the similar rock layer to main line of tunnel at test site and measured at the road surface just above the tunnel having different overburden layers were analysed to draw their relationship. By comparing the results with those appearing in some published literatures, the usefulness of the borehole test blasting and the importance of delay time of detonator are addressed.

  • This study deals with the effectiveness of roundabout. The goal is to comparatively analyze the operational effectiveness related to the conversion of rotary to roundabout in Korea. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attentions to investigating the existing 20 rotaries and developing the networks of before-and-after improvement using VISSIM, and comparatively analyzing the effectiveness. The domestic rotaries were analyzed to need many improvements of geometric structure for the effective operation of roundabout. The main results are as follow. First, when the present condition of traffic volume were applied, the operational effect of rotary were evaluated to be better than roundabout, but the difference analyzed to be small. Second, the average delay per vehicle in the rotaries of urban area were analyzed to rapidly increase according to the growth of traffic volume. Finally, the average speed of roundabout were evaluated to be less (about 10km/h) than that of rotary, because the traffic volume of rural area were less than that of urban area.

  • Resilient characteristics on unbound pavement materials have been adopted for design and nonlinear analysis of pavement structure under traffic loadings. However, relatively few studies have been done on the nonlinear resilient behavior of unbound materials in Korea. In addition to that, only the limited information is available for estimating the resilient modulus values on subgrade soils. In this study, a laboratory resilient-deformation test under repeated loadings is performed in order to establish the nonlinear characteristics of unbound subgrade soils in test roads. Then, a constitutive model that correlates the resilient modulus with moisture and stress state from field condition is proposed respectively. The results from all procedures are presented in this paper. Finally, a comparative analysis is conducted to identify the proper models in the stress dependent modulus and seasonal moisture condition of subgrade soils in test roads respectively.

  • Currently, the previous studies on the concept, configuration, and system regarding spacial information policies show the little progress. However, these studies only propose the basic structure system in terms of a policy theory, seeking and suggesting the basic concept to establish spacial information policies. In the shift of a new paradigm from a PC-based paradigm that began in the mid-2000s to the current smart society based on mobile devises, such as smart phones, this study thus reviewed the strategic direction of the propulsion to establish the desired future strategy for the spatial technology policy with spatial information system that can influence the future national competitiveness of Korea. The results of this study is expected to be used to analyze a variety of issues and technological changes on geospatial intelligence at the global level and to support the establishment of a road-map for policies and research & development on domestic geospatial information.

  • This study is a part of research for developing the technologies of long life pavements having more than 40-year design life. The objective of this study is to develop the simplified design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the long life pavement. A synthetic database was established using the finite element program of a pavement structure with various combinations of layer thickness and modulus. The synthetic database includes the structural and material information, surface deflection, and critical pavement responses. Using the developed synthetic database, this paper suggests the minimum layer thickness and modulus for long life pavements bared on the limited strain level concept. Results demonstrate that the pavement greater than 410mm of total AC layer thickness is considered as the long life pavements regardless of the material characteristics and thickness in each layer. To become a long life pavement, a total thickness of AC layer should be greater than 250mm. The design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the pavements with AC layer thickness ranging from 250 to 410mm is also presented in this paper.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to suggest a specific investigation guideline to decide priority of repairing old concrete pavements that pile up substantially. METHODS : In this study, a principle of division of homogeneous sections was proposed to reflect the characteristics of the pavement reasonably in the specific investigation results. In addition, a checklist and guideline of field investigation were suggested for the old concrete pavement sections, which require inspection toward their durability and structural performance. Furthermore, the items of laboratory test necessary to the old concrete pavement were suggested based on the existing laboratory test considering characteristics of the old concrete pavement. The present condition of the old concrete pavement could be analyzed by the test results. RESULTS : A method of division of homogeneous sections suitable for the specific investigation of the old concrete pavement was suggested. The proportions of distress severity of pavement sections were compared by distress type to figure out the present state of the old concrete pavement. Scaling, durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), and longitudinal spalling were selected as the most severe distress types. The detailed positions of the sections were also suggested. The checklist of the specific investigation was categorized by field survey and laboratory test, and its evaluation criteria were proposed. The three types of the sections of durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), bridge connection, and asphalt overlay were selected as the sections of the field survey. The compressive strength, void structure, and chloride penetration depth were suggested as the items of the laboratory test. CONCLUSIONS : A fundamental level of the guideline was suggested in this study to resolve the problem of old concrete pavement. Appropriate guidelines related to the repair of the old concrete pavement should be provided by performing additional research efforts.
