PURPOSES : This study proposes standards for rural access road pavement section and thickness design considering existing access road construction conditions; the study also proposes a complementary policy that can be used for design convenience. METHODS : Various literature review and case studies had been performed in terms of rural access road section and thickness design, both domestically and internationally, and this was followed by domestic rural access road field surveys. KPRP and KENLAYER were used to analyze the commonalities and predict the remaining life. Data on real cost is used to select an appropriate construction method through economic analysis. RESULTS : The economic efficiency of concrete pavement ($15{\times}15$) was the highest in terms of economic efficiency of performance life and traffic volume. In the case of asphalt pavement, it is considered that the most economical method is to implement micro-surfacing method four times as a preventive maintenance method (once every 10 years and 4.5 years for asphalt concrete pavement and MS construction method, respectively). Repairable asphalt pavement is advantageous for areas where heavy vehicles are expected to pass. In the case of other general areas, it is considered economical to place concrete ($15{\times}15$) pavement. However, as analytical results on its performance life are unavailable, it is to be considered for study in the future. CONCLUSIONS : This study proposed interim design guidelines based on various domestic and international design guidelines and case studies. However, in order to develop the final design criteria applicable to the field, it is necessary to (a) estimate the bearing capacity of the lower level of the pavement at various sites, (b) estimate the daily traffic volume, (c) implement advanced low-cost pavement technologies, and (d) propose maintenance standards and techniques for long-term performance.

The expansion of a road on soft ground could induce an additional settlement to the existing road because of the consolidation characteristics of the soft soil layer subjected to additional load by an adjacent banking. In such case, the existing road could be faced with various problems during the stages of the construction and maintenance, such as deterioration of not only the surface smoothness yielding the decrease in automobile performance safety but also the structural stability of the embankment. These kinds of problems are expected to occur more freguently especially for the deep ground level with a fairly thick soft soil layer. Therefore, they should be examined and studied adequately during the design stage. As a reference case study, this paper deals with the project named Namhae Expressway of 2nd Branch with the soft soil layer with the thickness upto about 50m. After a lengthy review of the original design, an improved design is proposed.

In recent years, research and development on image object recognition using artificial intelligence have been actively carried out, and it is expected to be used for road maintenance. Among them, artificial intelligence models for object detection of road surface are continuously introduced. In order to develop such object recognition algorithms, a backbone network that extracts feature maps is essential. In this paper, we will discuss how to select the appropriate neural network. To accomplish it, we compared with 4 different deep neural networks using 6,000 road surface damage images. Based on three evaluation methods for analyzing characteristics of neural networks, we propose a method to determine optimal neural networks. In addition, we improved the performance through optimal tuning of hyper-parameters, and finally developed a light backbone network that can achieve 85.9% accuracy of road surface damage classification.
This paper is to provide the allowable limit blasting-induced vibration for road structures and facilities. For this purpose, first of all, this study examined various allowable limits of different structures from domestic and foreign countries, investigated related problems of the limits used in the country, and suggested the measures to minimize the related problems. Furthermore, this study proposed the blasting-induced vibration limit of road structures and facilities that could be used in the country from comparing and analyzing the various limits from foreign countries. To verify the proposed limit for a practical use in the field, field cases that had both a vibration magnitude and a damage level were collected and they were compared with the proposed limit. In addition, the proposed limit was also compared with the results of analytical and numerical analyses. The comparison and analysis indicated that the proposed limit of different road structures and facilities is valid for the practical use in the field. From this study, the proposed limit is expected to be used as the limit to estimate the damage levels of road structures and facilities due to blasting-induced vibrations in the field.

This study analyzes the factors that affect the safety condition level of road-bridges, one of the important infrastructures. Utilizing Binary Logit model, this report empirically identifies the key factors that has influenced the recent assessed safety condition level of the first and the second major types of road-bridges, managed by public agencies, and the changes of the safety level for last six years. As a result of the analysis, the most important factor that influences the safety condition level is not the physical characteristics, but the management quality. As road-bridges are getting older and older, the management quality tends to bring about more differentials in assessing the safety condition level. The safety condition level, C or D, is likely to be improved the level, A or B, is likely to become degraded. To achieve the goal that keep the safety condition level, A and B, more than 90%, it should be considered to make the degrading rate from B to C lower. However, this study includes the limitation on data. It is essential to collect structure data that are spread out in many agencies to complement the limitation for further research.
PURPOSES : While road networks are becoming increasingly complex, traffic signs are being indiscriminately installed and operated, which makes drivers who depend on traffic signs to reach their destination confused and unable to understand road information efficiently. In order to promptly and exactly guide road users to their destinations, traffic signs should be able to satisfy the functions of connectivity, visibility, and location suitability. However, the results of a site survey shows that most of the traffic signs currently installed in the Jeollanam-do Province do not satisfy these functions. METHODS : This study analyzed the problems of traffic signs after an actual site survey and focused on a total on 9,353 traffic signs and 70 road routes in Jeollanam-do Province. RESULTS : This study analyzed the problems of traffic signs based on their required functions (connectivity, visibility, suitability) and suggested improvements by establishing a guide system that considered the problems found in the study. CONCLUSIONS : The guide system can be utilized as a basic material that provides efficient road information for future installation and maintenance of traffic signs in Jeollanam-do Province.

Digital Elevation Model(DEM) is basic spatial information used in various GIS areas such as spatial analysis, 3D modeling, etc. In particular, DEM of road inclined plane is need for the plan, design, construction and maintenance of social infrastructures such as roads and bridges in construction technology, one of GIS application. However, generating DEM of road inclined plane with high accuracy is very difficult. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose how to generate road DEM with high accuracy through extracting road inclined plane automatically using Laser scanning data.
The impact behavior of a multigirder concrete bridge under single and multiple moving vehicles is studied based on correlated road surface characteristics. The bridge structure is modeled as grillage beam system. A 3D nonlinear vehicle model with eleven degrees of freedom is utilized according to the HS20-44 truck design loading in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications. A triangle correlation model is introduced to generate four classes of longitudinal road surface roughness as multi-correlated random processes along deck transverse direction. On the basis of a correlation length of approximately half the bridge width, the upper limits of impact factors obtained under confidence level of 95 percent and side-by-side three-truck loading provide probability-based evidence for the evaluation of AASHTO specifications. The analytical results indicate that a better transverse correlation among road surface roughness generally leads to slightly higher impact factors. Suggestions are made for the routine maintenance of this type of highway bridges.

Road damage detection is important for road maintenance. With the development of deep learning, more and more road damage detection methods have been proposed, such as Fast R-CNN, Faster R-CNN, Mask R-CNN and RetinaNet. However, because shallow and deep layers cannot be extracted at the same time, the existing methods do not perform well in detecting objects with fewer samples. In addition, these methods cannot obtain a highly accurate detecting bounding box. This paper presents a Multi-level Feature Pyramids method based on M2det. Because the feature layer has multi-scale and multi-level architecture, the feature layer containing more information and obvious features can be extracted. Moreover, an attention mechanism is used to improve the accuracy of local boundary boxes in the dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed method is better than the current state-of-the-art methods.

This paper proposes a practical and realistic method to establish an optimal lifetime maintenance strategy for deteriorating bridges by considering the life-cycle performance as well as the life-cycle cost. The proposed method offers a set of optimal tradeoff maintenance scenarios among other conflicting objectives, such as minimizing cost and maximizing performance. A genetic algorithm is used to generate a set of maintenance scenarios that is a multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem related to the lifetime performance and the life-cycle cost as separate objective functions. A computer program, which generates optimal maintenance scenarios, was developed based on the proposed method using the life-cycle costs and the performance of bridges. The subordinate relation between bridge members has been considered to decide optimal maintenance sequence and a corresponding algorithm has been implemented into the program. The developed program has been used to present a procedure for finding an optimal maintenance scenario for steel-girder bridges on the Korean National Road. Through this bridge maintenance scenario analysis, it is expected that the developed method and program can be effectively used to allow bridge managers an optimal maintenance strategy satisfying various constraints and requirements.
