This article describes some of the recent and on-going research developments of the author at Colorado State University. Advances in the field of sedimentation and river mechanics include basic research and computer modeling on several topics. Only a few selected topics are considered here: (1) analytical determination of velocity profiles, shear stress and sediment concentration profiles in smooth open channels; (2) experiments on bedload particle velocity in smooth and rough channels; (3) field measurements of sediment transport by size fractions in curved flumes. In terms of computer modeling, significant advances have been achieved in: (1) flashflood simulation with raster-based GIOS and radar precipitation data; and (2) physically-based computer modeling of sediment transport at the watershed scale with CASC2D-SED. Field applications, measurements and analysis of hydraulic geometry and sediment transport has been applied to: (1) gravel-bed transport measurements in a cobble-bed stream at Little Granite Creek, Wyoming; (2) sand and gravel transport by size fraction in the sharp meander bends of Fall River, Colorado; (3) changes in sand dune geometry and resistance to flow during major floods of the Rhine River in the Netherlands; (4) changes in hydraulic geometry of the Rio Grande downstream of Cochiti Dam, New Mexico; and (5) analysis of the influence of water temperature and the Coriolis force on flow velocity and sediment transport of the Lower Mississippi River in Louisiana. Recent developments also include two textbooks on "Erosion and Sedimentation" and "River Mechanics" by the author and state-of-the-art papers in the ASCE Journal of Hydraulic Engineering.
Sediments and river waters form the channel of Hwasun-cheon were studied in sedimentological size and geochemical analyses of metallic elements for the purposes of identification of depositional environments and geochemical characteristics. The sizes of sediments are assigned to pebble to coarse sand in mean size and polymodal in distribution. And the sediments are poorly to very poorly sorted and positively skewed. According to the grain size distributions of the sediments, the Hwasun-cheon belongs to gravel-bed river on the basis of the grain size distribution of the sediments. The behaviors of metallic elements in the sediments mainly depend on not grain size distribution but the geology connected with geomorphological reliefs near the stream. Contamination indices(CI) of Zn, Cu and Pb are 2.83 to 6.96 with average 4.31 in the sediments. Hwasun-cheon is assigned to general stream type in accordance with water quality of physical factors and chemical characteristics by Piper's diagram. Though meaningful values of BOD, T-N, T-P were locally depicted near Masan-ri, Hwasun-eup and Jiseok-cheon areas, artificial metal concentration do not represent in the most area of the stream. Sediments and river water are considered that the relatively more or less high metallic contents in the stream are originated from coal mine and urban area.

The purpose of the study was to investigated the change of hydraulic characteristics like water surface profile and rivered section in the down stream of Keum river after the construction of esturary dam. The effect of esturary dam on the flood control in the Keum river was recognized with the data of two flood events happened in July, 1987 before the construction and in August, 1995 after the construction of estuary dam. For example , duration time above the water level of the warning -flood was changed from 46.5 to 42.8 hours and duration time above the eater level of the danger-flood was changed from 24.7 to 19.8 hours at the Kyuam station. The time difference to reach the water level of the designated -flood between Kyuam and Kangkyung was changed from 3 hours in 1987 to 12 hours and 20 minutes in 1995. The water surface slope of river decreased 25.6% between estuary dam and Kangkyung and increased 16.5% between Kangkyung and Kyuam, and decreased 8.8% between Kyuam and Kongju. As the result, velocity was getting faster and river bed was scoured in the reach of Kangkyung and Kyuam, and velocity was getting slower and river bed was sedimented in the reach of Kangkyung and estury dam.
The resistance of soil to the tractive force of flowing water is one of the essential parameters for the stability of the soil when directly exposed to the movement of water such as in rivers and ocean beds. Biopolymers, which are new to sustainable geotechnical engineering practices, are known to enhance the mechanical properties of soil. This study addresses the surface erosion resistance of river-sand treated with several biopolymers that originated from micro-organisms, plants, and dairy products. We used a state-of-the-art erosion function apparatus with P-wave reflection monitoring. Experimental results have shown that biopolymers significantly improve the erosion resistance of soil surfaces. Specifically, the critical shear stress (i.e., the minimum shear stress needed to detach individual soil grains) of biopolymer-treated soils increased by 2 to 500 times. The erodibility coefficient (i.e., the rate of increase in erodibility as the shear stress increases) decreased following biopolymer treatment from 1 × 10-2 to 1 × 10-6 times compared to that of untreated river-sands. The scour prediction calculated using the SRICOS-EFA program has shown that a height of 14 m of an untreated surface is eroded during the ten years flow of the Nakdong River, while biopolymer treatment reduced this height to less than 2.5 m. The result of this study has demonstrated the possibility of cross-linked biopolymers for river-bed stabilization agents.

Semi-two dimension numerical models were applied to study on the hydraulic and sedimentologic characteristics of upstream and downstream channel section in Dal stream. The feature of this paper is (1) to analyse the effects of bed changes by sediment transport formulas, (2) to analyse the effects of bed changes by stream tube. The simulation results of Meyer-peter and Muller formula for long-term bed changes are good when compared to the measured data.

Changes in bed forms and subsequent changes in channel roughness by changes in water discharge are discussed with the field data collected from some alluvial rivers in Korea. This study is limited to the following condition of river flow: (1) Medium size alluvial rivers with their widths of 100 m more or less, (2) Straight and prismatic river reach with no additional causes for energy loss but bed friction, (3) Lower-flow regime with Froude number less than 0.5. Major conclusions obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) For the channels considered in this study, the bed roughness expressed by Manning's n increases from 0.02 for the plane beds with no sediment motion to 0.05 for the dune beds, (2) The roughness coefficient for alluvial channels should not be estimated from Strickler-type equations developed for the fixed beds, (3) The method for determining the channel roughness suggested in the present guideline for river works, River Structure Standard, appears to be lack of generality. More research based on the field data collected in Korea is needed in order to improve the existing methods.
Analysis using a numerical model is important to understand the sediment transport mechanism associated with erosion and sedimentation near weirs and other hydraulic structures within riverine systems. The local riverbed change near a hydraulic structure (Gangjeong-Goryong multi-function weir in the Nakdong river) was analyzed in order to examine the effect of hydraulic structures on local bed change. A 2D numerical model (CCHE-2D) was employed to simulate the sedimentation and erosion over a reach (25 km) including the weir. For the calibration and verification of the model, rainfall data from a real event (Typoon 'Ewiniar' in 2006) were used for flow and stage simulation. And the simulated results show a good agreement with the observed data for the whole domain. From the result, it was found that the installation and operation of the weir could aggravate bed changes by typhoon between movable weirs, and which resulted in redistribution of sediment.
Black and White aerial photogrphs are much useful to obtain the information on the channel-bed fluctuation in the following aspects. 1. In the decision of river width, the linear regression formula between the value of aerial photograph interpretation and that of field surveying is Y=1.0+0.94X(the decision coefficient is $r^2=0.98$). Therefore, aerial photographs are proved effective for the measurement of river width. 2. Aerial photograph interpretation makes it possible to classify the plane channel and the deposits in river, and suggests the situation of the plane distribution of deposits, the size of channel and the course of channel formation. 3. The periodical channel situation can be figured out through the interpretation of aerial photographs pictured in different times. Also, the comparing and analyzing each interpretated information can be able to guess the course of the variation of channel influencing powerfully channel - bed fluctuation. 4. The microtopographic map of river can be made through the decision of river with, the interpretation of the plane shape of channel - bed and the analysis of variation of channel. On the basis of this map, the plane analysis of deposit is possible.

Research for deposits in Nakdong eatuary that research about Nakdong eatuary's sediment flows out in Nakdong-kang so far had been progressed but research about deposits that is flowed in open sea is insufficient. Observed Nakdong eatuary's characteristic of sediment transfer through observation during the second during Buteo 20 days on February 6, 2004 in this research Resuspension bed load Flux appeared high the first result St.4 point and St.5 point. St.4 branch had much bed load amount that is flowed in the east, and bed load that St.5 branch is flowed in the south appeared much Tendency such as the first showed in the second result, but compare with the first result and St.5 branch had much bed load that is transfer in end. Bed load that is transfer in observation result Nakdong river was less. As this, can know that amount of sediment that is transfer in open sea more than deposits that is transfer in Nakdong river is much Is expected to exert effect that deposits that is transfer in open sea is high in Nakdong estuary's topography change. Specially, observation result is expected that Nakdong estuary's deposition tendency becomes Jinwoodo southern and Shinho southern.

The present study focuses on simulating river profile changes downstream of the Daecheong multipurpose dam by using the computer program HEC-6, which was developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The dam locates at the Keum river, a typical alluvial stream, whose bed material is composed mostly of fine and medium sands. The study reveals that after the completion of dam, a 15 km long reach downstream from the regulatory dam was severely degraded by about 2~3 m. No further severe degradation of this reach is expected, however, because the river-bed of this reach has been well armored since then with gravels and cobbles. Some places in the study reach were degraded locally by 2 m, due mainly to the large-scale gravel mining activities in that reach. On the other hand, a 20 km long reach in downstream study reach is aggraded more or less by 0.5~1 m. Calculation by the computer program HEC-6 is close to measurement for the study river reach. According to the results by HEC-6, the study river reach would remain generally stable in the future, except a few places in the mid-upstream where further river-bed degradation of 1~2 m would occur and a few places in the far downstream where local river-bed aggradations of about 0.5 m would occur.
