  • River restoration or rehabilitation should be conducted in a way to maximize the channel stability with natural river configuration close to the equilibrium condition considering divers aspects of fluvial hydraulics, erosion and sedimentation, fluvial geomorphology, and ecological environment and to minimize the maintenance work. Therefore, the channel stability evaluation for present condition based on the equilibrium channel concept should be preceded for the river restoration project. Methods for equilibrium channel theory have generally been developed following either analytical regime theory or empirical regime theory. The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the stability of present channel condition for the section of abandoned channel restoration in Cheongmi Stream using the Stable channel Analytical Model (SAM) and equilibrium hydraulic geometry equations. The results of analytical and empirical regime theories should provide fundamental and essential information to design the stable channel geometry. As a calculation result of Copeland's method for the study reach, the equilibrium channel has a narrower channel width, deeper water depth, and more gentle slope than the present channel geometry. As results of equilibrium hydraulic geometry equations, predicted equilibrium widths are less than the channel width in the field. It is represented that the current bed slope must be gentle to reach the equilibrium condition according to the results of Julien and Wargadalam method.

  • This study(I) has analyzed hydraulic characteristics with pier shapes by the bridge construction. The pier shapes are classified into total six types such as square, rhombus, octagon, oval, round, and no-piers. One-dimensional model(HEC-RAS) and two-dimensional model (RMA-2) were employed to analyze hydraulic characteristics around bridge piers. Square and rhombus shapes of piers showed velocity vectors in the upstream direction, which has a significant impact on the river bed changes by erosion and sediment transport around the piers. The flow characteristics of the oval type pier was most similar to that of no-pier situation almost without disrupting the river flow. This analysis can help to select pier types in the new bridge construction for the future.

  • In South Korea a Pedo-sedimentary Sequence(PS) indicating the Last Glacial Maximun(LGM) is typified y a brown to dark brown, relatively stiff paleosol layers formed by repetitive freezing and thawing processes which in turn left characteristi glossic textures in soil-solum, polygolnal structures with a flagipans, vertical soil wedges or freezing cracks, and horizontal foliations, As a pre-LGM sedimentary sequences (older than 25Ka), the Old Fluvial Sequence(OFS) overlain by the Slope Sedimentary Sequence(SS) are distributed commonly at the base level higher than 14-15m above present river-bed along the major river basin. After the LGM (ca. 18Ka), the Young Fluvial Sequence(YFS) appears at an altitude ascending order of sedimentary profiles. In this fluvial organic muds of Jangheungri site(Jinju), Sorori site(Cheonwon), and Youngsan estruarine rivermouth(Mokpo) were exemplified in order to interpret their formation ages and environments. As result of $^{14}C$ datings, the formation ages of te organic muds are Boelling to Alleroed (MIS-1). These organic muds were fomed in fluvial backswamp or local pond/bog in response to shifting fluvial system. On the basis of palynological production dominant with Abies/Picea-Betula and Ranunculaceae, Compositae, Cyperaceae, and Graminae, it was interpreted that more boreal to subboreal condition was prevailed rather than temperate like today during the formation of organic muds and soil moisture condition was a repetition of wet and dry condition.

  • The major objective of this study is to develop practical methods for estimating sediment yield rates of medium size watersheds of which areas range from 200 to $2,000km^2$. For this purpose, this study adopts an empirical method of statistical approach and another empirical method of weighting the watershed characteristics factors. A total of 13 data points for sediment yield rate, including five data points from reservoir deposit data and eight data points from sampled river-sediment data have been collected. Meanwhile, seven factors that may affect the sediment yield rate of a watershed have been selected. They are drainage density, rainfall erosivity, ground cover and land use, soil erodibility, topography, river-bed material characteristics, and watershed area. In the companion paper following this paper, methods for estimating sediment yield rate are to be developed using the 13 data points collected and seven watershed characteristics factors selected in this study.

  • The eco-hydrologic effects of maintenance water supply on Oncheon stream are studied using hydrologic, hydraulic and ecologic models. SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) is used for long-term simulation of runoff quantity and water quality from Oncheon stream watershed. Using the output hydrologic variables from SWMM, HEC-RAS (River Analysis System) is then used to simulate the hydraulics of water flow through Oncheon stream channels. Such hydrologic, hydraulic and water quality output variables from SWMM and HEC-RAS are served as input data to execute PHABSIM (Physical Habitat Simulation) for the purpose of predicting the micro-habitat conditions in rivers as a function of stream flow and the relative suitability of those conditions to aquatic life. It is observed from the PHABSIM results that the weighted usable area for target fishes has the maximum value at $2m^3/s$ of instream flow. However, mid and down stream areas that have concrete river bed and covered region are unsuitable for fish habitat regardless of instream flow increment. The simulation results indicate that the simple maintenance water supply is limited in its effect to improve the ecological environment in Oncheon stream. Therefore, it is imperative to improve water quality and to recover habitat conditions simultaneously.

  • The point sand bars of Hahoi Village on Nakdong River have undergone considerable changes including fluvial and vegetation characteristics due to flood regulation by the dams constructed upstream. In this study, the numerical fluvial/sediment and water quality model, KU-RLMS, is applied to the aquatic area near Hahoi Village (middle/upper region of the Nakdong River) for clarifying the mechanisms of changes in hydraulic and aquatic characteristics. The fixed-bed hydraulic experiment was carried out for horizontal two-dimensional numerical model. The numerical simulation reveals that flow is accelerated near the left bank of Booyongdae downstream of the Hahoi Village area. Circulatory flow pattern was observed at the right bank downstream of Hahoi Village. The simulation was in good agreement with the hydraulic/physical experiment. For the discharge of design flood, at the area of circulatory flow pattern, the superelevation of about 1.0 m at the right bank was predicted compared to the left bank of high flow velocity, which is also in good agreement with hydraulic experiment.

  • In this study, a river basin with a lot of measured data such as water level, flow rate, current speed, and sediment rate from the past to now was selected and geometrical shape of a pier was re-analyzed, in order to study the effects of the flow around the pier area as well as the riverbed alternation characteristics. A finite element mesh of the entire river was prepared, and via parameter revision, the section that the pier has influence on was decided, to analyze the shape of the pier using RMA-2 and SED2D-WES models. With regards to the section that the pier has influence on, analysis was done on the four pier shapes, namely circle, square, rectangle, and octagon. The results showed that the shape with the least influence around the pier around is the octagon, followed by circle, rectangle, and square, showing the different geometrical effects that the shapes have on the pier. Furthermore, it was shown that the distribution of sediment concentration had effect from about (+) 110 m of the upstream to about (-) 130 m of the downstream, from the pier installation point. Also, it was shown after analyzing drag forces for different sediment particle distributions that the shape with the greatest drag is the octagon, followed by circle, square, and rectangle.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine morphometric characteristics in a channel bend reach. The new shape factor is suggested that channel deformation rate of cross section (${\Delta}A_s$) showed the variation of concentrated location of force due to the current and the variation of erosional section in alluvial channel. In the downstream direction the meaning of decreasing "${\Delta}A_s$" is the stability of channel bed. This study was analyzed morphological characteristics of cross section-width of channel ($W_s$), width to the thalweg ($W_{th}$), maximum depth ($D_{th}$)-on the Guem River, and typical cross sections in channel bend were proposed. The channel migration rate (M) for the study river was represented that the zones of curvature ratio (R/W) with 2~4 were larger 12% than other zones.

  • This study is to select the areas to ensure stream space or to implement flood defence measures according to flood frequencies by classifying the stream segment using river bed slope in Mangyeong river. The analysis result for each stream segment showed that the variation of flood inundation area was small in upper stream catchment. But in the lower stream area, the inundation area became larger greatly according to the increase of flood return period. This study classified the catchment of each steam segment as the region of ensuring stream space (ESS), below 10% residential area ratio, and the region of reinforcing flood defence (RFD), over 10% residential area ratio. The analysis results showed that the lower stream area included more RFD regions than upper stream area, and the upper stream area included more ESS regions than lower stream area. In future study, the regions stream spaces can be ensured will be analyzed considering the past stream morphology and the positions of wetlands.

  • This paper presents an echo-hydraulic experimental approach to assessment of ascending capacity of migratory fish in a baffled fishway. Sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, are used in these experiments. Ascending environment of the migratory fish in rivers is analyzed through the results of taco-hydraulic experiments. Important factors affecting the ascending capacity of migratory fish in baffled fishways are the discharge and slope of fishways and the fall height between the fishway entrance and the river bed. In these fishways the migratory capacity of sweetfish for a given fishway discharge is mainly affected by fishway slope, whereas the ascending capacity of trout for a given fishway slope was influenced by the change of fishway discharge. Loss of ascending properties of landlocked salmon, Oncorhynchus masou var ishikawai, was confirmed by these experiments. An ascending hydraulic criteria of the baffled fishway is defined by means of dimensionless factor F$_{f}$ and falling head H$_{f}$. Ascending capacity of migratory fish in existing baffled fishways in river of eastern coastal region is poor because the slope of fishways is verb steep.eep.
