This study examines the potential restoration of abandoned channels of the Mangyeong River in South Korea. To analyze the morphological changes and equilibrium conditions, a flow duration analysis was performed to obtain the discharge of 255 m3/s with a recurrence interval of 1.5 year. It is a gravel-bed stream with a median bed diameter of 36 mm. The reach-averaged results using HEC-RAS showed that the top width is 244 m, the mean flow depth is 1.11 m, the width/depth ratio is very high at 277, the channel velocity is 1.18 m/s, and the Froude number is also high at 0.42. The hydraulic parameters vary in the vicinity of the three sills which control the bed elevation. The total sediment load is 6,500 tons per day and the equivalent sediment concentration is 240 mg/l. The Engelund-Hansen method was closer to the field measurements than any other method. The bed material coarser than 33 mm will not move. The methods of Julien-Wargadalam and Lacey gave an equilibrium channel width of 83 m and 77 m respectively, which demonstrates that the Mangyeong River is currently very wide and shallow. The planform geometry for the Mangyeong River is definitely straight with a sinuosity as low as 1.03. The thalweg and mean bed elevation profiles were analyzed using field measurements in 1976, 1993 and 2009. The measured profiles indicated that the channel has degraded about 2 m since 1976. The coarse gravel material and large width-depth ratio increase the stability of the bed material in this reach.
Seasonal variation and abundance of fish larvae in Han River estuary were determined by analysis of seasonal samples collected from three channels in the Han River estuary from May 2007 to August 2008. During the study, a total of 3,642 fish larvae were collected belonging to 13 taxa. Coilia spp. was the most abundant (48.8%). The highest number of taxa (11 taxa) was collected in the Jangbong channel and abundance was high in the Sukmo channel (2,428 ind./$1,000m^3$). Brackish-water species were prevailed in the Yumhwa channel and the Sukmo channel, while coastal species were abundant in the Jangbong channel. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that the environmental factors such as water temperature and salinity had a strong relationship with the abundance of major larvae species.
This study focuses on whether a physical habitat model, River2D, is useful to assess and design stream restoration. To achieve the aim, the habitat suitability for Zacco Platypus was analyzed using River2D at midstream of the Anyang-Cheon through modifying the low flow channel and changing the flow discharge. The River2D simulation results show that the inhabited environment for Zacco Platypus is improved by increasing the sinuosity of the low flow channel, and vice versa. Also the inhabited environment for Zacco Platypus gets worse when there is no additional flow for maintenance water supply at the stream flowing through cities. In this respect, the physical habitat simulation study based on the River2D model is useful because it provides a practical guidance in designing stream restoration.
Recently, most of the rivers in Korea are experiencing various problems in dimension and river environment, such as expansion of stable area where disturbance does not occur during flood, increase of excessive trees in river channel, fixation of river channel, reduction of sand bar. When the soil supplied by the flood is deposited in the river, the plant is settled in the formed terrain, and when another disturbance of the scale that does not erode there occurs after the plant is settled, the river gradually grows and the vegetation zone is formed there. In particular, in terms of river management, river forestation and river aggradation are objects that must be managed because they are disadvantageous in terms of flood control by lowering the flow rate and raising the water level. Therefore, in this study, the area of vegetation occupied by the year of sandbar was analyzed in the process of river aggradation in Jang-Hang wetland. In addition, the correlation between the growth of Jang-Hang wetland was analyzed through the analysis of the flow rate and the flooding frequency that directly affect the growth of Jang-Hang wetland. Through this, the management plan of Jang-Hang wetland, which is registered in Ramsar Wetland but has been river forestation and is undergoing river aggradation, was proposed.

Stable channel design is to determine the width, depth and slope for satisfying the condition that the upstream incoming sediment rate is equal to the sediment transport rate at the design channel. Therefore, the most sensitive variable when designing a stable channel is the selection of a sediment transport equation applied for the channel design. Especially if in the case of gravel beds the designer uses the equation developed by using the data of sand rivers, the calculation result of the stable channel section has large errors. In this study, the stable channel design has been applied to the gravel bed river using the previous stable channel design program with newly added the sediment transport equation for gravel beds; and the stable channel section considering design constraints has been produced by using the analytical method. As results, in the case of the application with the fixed width, the depth predicted by Ackers and White's equation was the shallowest and Meyer-Peter and $M\ddot{u}ller's$ equation was 0.8 m deeper than the current section of 2.4 m. In the case of the application with the fixed depth, the width predicted by Engelund and Hansen's equation was twice wider than the current section and by Meyer-Peter and $M\ddot{u}ller's$ equation was 20 m wider than the current section of 44 m.
Abandoned channel is vestiges of running in the past. Abandoned channels have been formed mostly by artificial river maintenance through channel straightening in Korea. Managed properly, these now abandoned channels can provide habitat for wildlife, maintain biodiversity of aquatic life, security against flooding and recreation area for human. However, because the areas are officially classified as abandoned, the channels is collapsing and decaying from years of neglect. This study suggested functional assessment for wetland-type abandoned channel in order to provide appropriate management and investment. For this reason, The study will examine and evaluate these channels with regard to the following four major criteria (Natureless, Habitat, Water-friendliness and Water quality) and 21 indices. Consequently, abandoned channel in two Nakdong river sites, site 1 was needed for protection or improvement in the medium to longer term, while site 2 was in good condition. This evaluation method will be helpful to manage wetland-type abandoned channel in Korea and will be able to use National River Health Program.
In recent years, an increment of river engineering activities and more intensive use of flood plain, the river geomorphology has attracted considerable attention owing to an extensive land reclamation. One of the important problems is the maintenance of river meanders and almost all natural rivers exhibit the tendency to be a meander. A statistical analysis is applied to typifying their shapes and the meander characteristics are analyzed by channel model of line generalization algorithm in this study. This method is applied to Han River System. The results show that the variance of curvature is a better index to describe the meander intensity and the kurtosis is a good index to characterize the total lengh of the straight sections for a given reach. The channel model of line generalization algorithm gives good results in analysis of meander characteristics.
The levee and bridge pier in estuary of the Hangang River are exposed in a dangerous condition due to bank erosion and local scouring occurred since the summer season in 2011. At first, it is presumed that the high sandbar formed in river channel of the study area was an important element in the occurrence of bank erosion and local scouring. It can be presumed that the record-breaking depth of freezing due to cold wave for the long term during the winter season between 2010 and 2011 as well as the heavy intensive rainfall of 2011 had a decisive effect on the first damage of A section. The second damage of B section mainly occurred around the bridge pier constructed on the high water channel before it was washed away during the winter season between 2011 and 2012. It is considered that the second damage was caused by ice formation and ice floes.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the visual preference factors for river scenery, which can vary according to changes in water levels, to estimate the optimal ratio of water surface/river width. Five locations on the Youngsan and Sumjin Rivers were selected as representative samples and field survey data such as channel geometry with water levels were prepared to develop the slide of river scenery, To estimate the level of satisfaction in river scenery, slides of 4 different water levels at each of the representative locations were developed through questionnaire. To analyse the correlation between the visual preference for river scenery and preference factors, a multi regression analysis method was adopted in this study. According to the results of the multi regression analysis, Factor B(Aesthetic factors) have the greatest affect on visual preferences and Factor A(A Feeling of Open space and Physical factors) affect significantly to visual preferences for river scenery. The results of analysis shows that the most preferred W/B ratio varies from 0.5 to 0.7 and this result indicates that many people prefer high levels river flow to maintain a natural and harmonious view of rivers. The results of this study will contribute to the field of river landscape design and river restoration projects in order to maximize the human being's satisfaction as a part of nature.
The flow in meandering channel has a great influence on curved bank revetment in river morphology. It is difficult to state generalized cirteria for channel improvement applicable to any paricular river. But it is very important to provide some principles and guidelines for design engineers. The objective of this experimental study in fixed bed model is to povide effective data that find out maximum velocity size by the mean velocity and the radius of curvature in curved channel, for the purpose of improving small stream without hydraulic modeling test each time.
